Wargaming.net is working on a new free-to-play MMO filled with tanks. In a somewhat confusing trailer the message seems to be that "tanks" as normally defined in the world of MMORPGs like World of Warcraft, are the fighters in fantasy MMOs. Toward the end of the trailer, World War II era tanks overrun these fantasy "tanks" and seem to make it clear who is really the boss.
There have recently been several free-to-play MMOs released, but what makes this one interesting is that Wargaming.net is involved. They developed the smash hit Massive Assault as well as Order of War, so they clearly have a solid track record of game development. What makes World of Tanks look interesting is that it is being developed so that battles of 30 versus 30 games will face off in a PvP (player versus player) environment. Classic and experimental models of tanks will be included, so players may take command of anything ranging from a T-34 to a Maus.
"A wise gentleman once observed that men had the same relationship to tanks, as women to SPA treatments: an all-eclipsing love, hardwired into the genes," says Victor Kislyi, CEO of Wargaming.net, "That's why we are coming up with Panzer MMO."
That may or may not be true, but the scheduled release date for World of Tanks is this Fall, where we'll get the chance to find out for ourselves.
