Atomic Games' upcoming game, Breach, nearly had its own security breached on May 19th at PAX East 2010 in Boston.
According to a press release just issued and corroborated by news reports on Kotaku.com, Justin D. May, 20, of Delaware allegedly used his laptop to hack into an Xbox 360® Test Kit being used to demonstrate Breach. May had allegedly downloaded no more than 14 MB of code when an Atomic Games employee noticed something was wrong and began to question May. Reports say May then fled, but was apprehended by PAX East security and Atomic Games employees.
"Breach, and our Hydrogen game engine, are the result of millions of dollars of investment and years of hard work," said Peter Tamte, President of Atomic Games. "It would have been very harmful if Breach had been posted on the Internet months before its planned release. Thankfully the Boston Police Department and Suffolk County District Attorney quickly realized the seriousness of the crime and plan to prosecute Mr. May."
Although initially there was speculation that this might be some kind of PR stunt, it now appears as though a crime may have been committed. According to a report on Kotaku.com, a police report was filed. (Read the Police Report on Kotaku.com.)
According to the press release, May has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
More informaiton about Breach can be found on the official website.
