The Simulation of the Year
The Simulation category was a three-horse race, with UbiSoft taking the top two positions with the World War II flight-sim
IL-2 Sturmovik and the sub-sim Silent Hunter II. In fact, the superb
IL-2 Sturmovik enjoyed the biggest run-away victory
of any winner in all categories. Another World War II flight-sim,
Rowan’s Battle of Britain rounds out the top three.
Simulations in general have been on hard times lately, and 2001 wasn’t exactly a banner year in terms of quantity. Excellent games are still being produced, however, even if at a
reduced pace. Microsoft's latest
Flight Simulator received some votes, as did the Train Simulator, indicating there may be a market for sims that
think “outside the box” traditional air, land and sea vehicles. Space-sim fans were treated to Particle Systems
Independence War 2 – Edge of Chaos. Finally, let us not forget the infamous
World War II Online, Cornered Rat Studio's interesting experiment in massively-multiplayer operations which is
coming into its own after a rocky launch.
