Introduction
Well, it's that time of year again. The Wargamer staff has spoken, and this time, we had the reader's vote in tandem. Many excellent games were released in 2002, and a large number of them managed to be somebody's favorite.
We made a few other changes this year. Two additional categories were voted on by the staff: board game and "Indy," or Independently-developed games. Both of these categories receive coverage on our site, yet really can't compete attention-wise with the big guns. Nevertheless, we wanted to recognize the important contribution made by these developers and publishers throughout the year, as well as the part they play in making The Wargamer what it is today.
As we did last year, the staff voted for multiple titles in each category, with different weights added to the votes.
The Wargamer staff's awards, the Best of the Year, are recognized
by gold, silver and bronze awards. The separate, but nonetheless
unique and highly regarded, Readers' Choice awards are recognized
by a winner, a second place and a third. All three are recognized by
the copper award shown on the bottom of this page. All of the games receiving staff votes are listed, and generally the top 30-50% of the
Readers' Choice selections are also provided.
Once again, the Readers' seem to be remarkably in tune with the staff. In order to provide complete coverage, many of our staff are specialists in the games they write about. Our fans, however, are largely wargamers; albeit, wargamers who appreciate good strategy, RPG, action and sim games as well. The difference is most evident when you look at Matrix Game's
Uncommon Valor, a title that appeals more to a hardcore wargaming or grognard audience. While a large number of our readers fancy themselves grognards, only a representative smaller portion of our staff actually see themselves as such.
