Semper Fi
PC GAME REVIEW posted on 3 JUL 2001 by Gary
Semper Fi does reflect a tremendous amount of good work by a lot of people which is a real shame to go to waste. The game does have its bright spots with initiative determination and player programmable AI, but the sum of the parts just comes up short.
Peoples General
PC GAME REVIEW posted on 3 JUL 2001 by Gary
If you enjoyed Panzer General II and are looking forward to a 2000 version, this is your baby, so enjoy it. If the victory and scoring situation demotivated and frustrated you in Panzer General II, expect more of the same here--nothing is different in that area.
Battle Isle - The Andosia War
PC GAME REVIEW posted on 12 MAR 2001 by Al Berke
Battle Isle - The Andosia War is an interesting mix of turn-based tactical combat and real-time strategy (RTS) that offers an ultimately satisfying series of bloody slugfests for those gamers patient enough to work through multiple patches and scanty documentation.
Call to Power II
PC GAME REVIEW posted on 13 DEC 2000 by Mark G. McLaughlin
The right to call a game by the title Civilization sparked rivalries and lawsuits that eventually led to the collapse and acquisition of game companies, the firing, resignation and hiring of new designers and public duels (mostly but not always just in print) between many interested and afflicted parties. Activision was a major player in all of these donnybrooks. Regardless of all that, and no matter what the title printed on the box, Call to Power II IS Civilization - and except for the multi-player bugs and a time-consuming scenario editor - it is Civilization done right.
Gunship!
PC GAME PREVIEW posted on 1 DEC 2000 by Syd Taba
Those of you who think of MicroProse as the king of flight sims no doubt remember a little something called Gunship 2000. Gunship 2000 qualifies as the first flight sim that managed to make me an addict. LHX Attack Chopper, Chuck Yeager's Air Combat, A-10 Warthog, Red Baron, all of these came close, but in the end they were no match for Gunship 2000. Gunship 2000 had it all: phenomenal graphics (for its time), innovative game design, realistic flight models, and above all, incredible atmosphere. If I sound nostalgic, it's because I am. I miss those classics - flight sims with a soul. Recently flight sims have been all graphical pizzazz and barely anything else (with a few notable exceptions). However the era of the classic flight sim seems to be returning. Among the games leading the comeback, MicroProse's Gunship! is shaping up to be nothing short of amazing.
Enemy Engaged: Comanche versus Hokum
PC GAME PREVIEW posted on 1 DEC 2000 by Mark T Bourdeaux
Comanche-Hokum, developed by Razorworks, is in part a sequel to the recently released helicopter combat sim Apache-Havoc, but it can also be considered an add-on since the helicopters and maps from Apache-Havoc can be implemented into this new title, however this option was not activated for this beta preview copy. As the very lengthy game title describes, the game puts you in control of either an American RAH-66 Comanche or Russian KA-52 Hokum, engaging the opponent in a dynamic war-raging environment.
Beachead 2000
PC GAME REVIEW posted on 17 AUG 2000 by Mark G. McLaughlin
This is an easy to boot-up, easy to learn shooter with a historical, military feel that should appeal to most wargamers (including turn-based, boardgame-designing, miniatures-playing 40-somethings like this editor). It is a guilty pleasure.
Gunship!
PC GAME REVIEW posted on 25 MAY 2000 by Syd Taba
Personally, I feel torn by my Gunship! experience. On the one hand, I see a game falling desperately short of what it promised to be, yet on the other hand I see a brilliant and innovative game shining through in moments that are, unfortunately, too few and far between for my taste. Ultimately, the enjoyment one gets out of Gunship! depends on one’s expectations. Those expecting Longbow 3, read no further – this isn’t that game. Those expecting a tank sim in a gunship sim’s clothing (with elements of an FPS thrown in for good measure), this is the game for you.
KA52 Team Alligator
PC GAME PREVIEW posted on 28 APR 2000 by Nathan Cathey
Stress – exactly what is it? Is it trying to decide which joystick to get? Is it trying to decide which of your twelve employees no longer has a job? Is it trying to complete the seven tasks your boss assigned you in half the time required? What about being deep in enemy territory flying at 200 kph ten meters off the deck in a KA-52 Alligator. If that isn’t enough, add to it that the player has to coordinate the attack with five other helicopters!
Sid Meier’s Alien Crossfire
PC GAME REVIEW posted on 5 NOV 1999 by Mike Dorn
While Alien Crossfire is only a small step forward as a sequel, it offers a huge, heaping helping of added play. The concept of Alien Crossfire is about as well done as it could be, and it feels very seamless in how it relates to Alpha Centauri. The variety of minor bugs is annoying, but Firaxis has so far enjoyed a reputation for quickly dealing with such problems. Any gamer who enjoyed Alpha Centauri will enjoy this addition to their universe.
Civilization II Test of Time
PC GAME REVIEW posted on 11 OCT 1999 by Mike Dorn
The whole feel of Test of Time is that it just isn’t that substantial an offering and doesn’t represent much of a jump forward from Civilization II Multiplayer Gold Edition (unless you can’t live without the new graphics). The "World of Midgard" scenario alone is worth recommending Test of Time, but only once you can find it at a discounted price. At full price, it looks like trying to cash in one last time on the Civilization II name, with a haphazard effort.
