Welcome to this week’s Wargamer Weekly, where we (w)round-up & summarise the more interesting bits of news in the world of wargaming. A bit of a table-top focused one this week, since the GAMA trade-show brought with it a bunch of interesting announcements. First up though…

Matrix Games

The release of Afghanistan ’11 is closing in, and Matrix is continuing to push out articles looking at different aspects of the game. Alex has already written a rather glowing preview on the game’s pre-release build, and newcomer Ian is already making positive noises as he finalises his review.

If you’re interested in finding out more regarding what’s on offer, the publisher has released a new post looking at the Skirmish mode, as well as in-game awards/achievements.

GAMA News

The GAMA trade show has been happening out in the US this week, and big companies like Games Workshop and FFG have used it to make some interesting announcement. Here’s a quick summary:

Star Wars: Armada’s Wave VI has now been revealed, consisting of two ship packs (so far); one Rebel and one Imperial. The Rebels are getting a new small ship in the form of the Hammerhead-class Corvette, and the Imperials are getting a medium base ship in the form of the Quasar Fire-class cruiser-carrier (which made its debut appearance in the Truce at Bakura novel, doncha know).

As an Armada player, I’m very excited for this and what’s really interesting is that they are selling a single pack that has two Hammerheads in it. Makes sense, as most of the small ships are worth owning in duplicate so we will see if this is how they do things going forward.

Meanwhile, the X-Wing Miniatures game is getting Wave XI. Three ships, one for each faction. The TIE Aggressor, the Scurrg H-6 Bomber (Scum) and the Rebels get the Auzituck Gunship. Bit of a weird selection, although it’s really down to the roles & tactics this new fighters serve. Still, one can’t help but wonder if they’re running out of ideas?

Warhammer 40,000 is getting a new Skirmish game that mixes Kill Team with Necromunda-style rules called Shadow War: Armageddon. The base set comes with some Space Marine Scouts and some Ork Boyz, but you can use the wider 40K range in this format. Rules for other factions will be included as well, and the highlight of the set is apparently the modular scenery kit . Don’t forget to read our review of the basic ‘Kill Team’ set, along with an overview of a community made variant.

Age of Sigmar got plenty of love as well. A new starter set called Thunder & Blood as well as a new race called the Kharadron Overlords. There was also something called Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire announced, which is set in the Mortal Realms.

Some other interesting tid-bits to happen this week:

Osprey Games are hiring for several roles in the UK – if you’ve ever wanted to get in the publishing/production side of your favourite hobby, this might be your chance!

If you’re a TANKS player, you might be pleased to know that Gale Force Nine are releasing a new Desert Campaign, with a host of new miniatures to go with it for both the British and the Germans. Beasts of War have a great overview of the new packs, as well as the campaign itself.

We’ve also got several other videogame related announcements as well:

  • Codex of Victory, from 1C Publishing, was released yesterday. Check out our Wargamer’s Guide for a brief overview, but we’ll get you a review as soon as we can. There's a free demo you can try out for yourself, in the mean time.
  • Indie Wargame project Land Doctrine was also released on Steam this week. This strategy wargame focuses on the abstract concept of Military Optimization as you research and design tanks & infantry & determine their training. We’ve got code, so will be taking a look ASAP.
  • Finally, Horus Heresy: Battle of Tallarn got a DLC pack called Ascendance. It adds 12 new combat units, 6 stand-alone scenarios playable as both sides and a new six mission campaign. This would be interesting if it weren’t for the fact that Tallarn isn’t very good. Still, we thought we’d let you know, just in case.
