Wargamer Weekly: Games, Chains and Warmobiles...

By Joe Robinson 19 May 2017 0

We know you look forward to these each and every Friday. It's ok, we do too. It's not been a massively hectic week in terms of news, but there's been some cool stuff happening. Matrix have had a pretty decent week this week, a few game releases along with some announcements.

Their biggest news of the week isn't strictly speaking a wargame, but regardless of how you define it it's still pretty cool. Battlestar Galactica Deadlock is a new game from the creators of Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy.

Iterating and improving on what they did before, this tactical space-combat game will throw you into the heart of the First Cylon War (as portrayed by the 2004 TV series), where you're put in charge of the Colonial Fleet in an effort to crush the Cylon Rebellion.

Like Star Hammer, this is a turn-based WEGO system. Not quite “pause-able real-time” as you'll see spoken about elsewhere as that implies you have some kind of choice as to when to pause (a la BFG Armada). Deadlock's combat missions are divided up into 10-second chunks of time. Every 10 seconds, the game will pause to allow you to issue fresh orders and try to re-act to what's happened.

No word on release date, as always, but it'll be this by the end of Summer for sure, and the game is coming to PC and Consoles.

CMANO Chains of War

The latest big stand-alone expansion to CMANO has been released, along with the 1.12 update. New features and scenarios mean that this can be bought and played as a stand-alone experience, or you can update the base game to unlock the content.

James Cobb is currently working on the review, so keep an eye out for that sometime next week.

New Game: Desert War 1940 – 1942

Something for the traditionalists among you, Matrix have announced a brand new wargame set during WW2's North Africa Theatre. Fight as either the Commonwealth or the Italian/German forces as you wage war across the desert plains of Egypt, Tunisia and more!

This is a good old-fashioned WEGO wargame, with focuses on supply and careful forward planning. No news on release date, but you can sign up to the beta right now!

HexWar Head North

You've always wanted to invade Canada right? Everyone's so nice over there. They'd pretty much hand the keys of government over to you if you ask nicely.

HexWar have announced another board-to-digital adaptation, this time of Academy Games' board/wargame 1812: The Invasion of Canada.

This adaptation will feature 3 scenarios, Solo vs. AI play as well as multiplayer – cross platform 2 player or up to five players hot-seating on the same device. It's due out in June on PC/Mac and then iOS and Android tablets.

Warhammer 40,000 - 8th Edition Updates

The release of the 8th edition of Games Workshop's flagship sci-fi wargame approaches, and every week it seems we get drop-pods of new information. The headline though, apart from some new models to sink your money into, is a second Q&A that occurred recently.

Bell of Lost Souls did an write-up of the salient notes form the Q&A, so we recommend reading this article to quickly catch yourself up. They've also done a great summary of 7th Edition products that are likely to start disappearing from store shelves soon.

Last but not least, check out this new card-based wargame we just got delivered to the office! Joe backed this Kickstarter project last year, and we're very much looking forward to giving it a look. Stay tuned for future coverage!
