The Operational Art of War - Century of Warfare (TalonSoft)

The Winners

Second Runner-up:  Horse & Musket
First Runner-up:  Panzer Campaigns - Normandy '44
Turn-based Wargame of the Year:  Combat Mission

Comments:  There were a lot of excellent choices in 2000 to keep turn-based wargame fans at their computers. Voting was wide spread among the numerous titles nominated, but the juggernaut known as Combat Mission easily took the honors, equaling the combined total of the two runners-up.

Real-time Wargames
The Nominees

Age of Empires II - The Conquerors Expansion (Microsoft)
Brigade Combat Team (Shrapnel Games)
Close Combat - Invasion Normandy (SSI)
Shogun - Total War (Electronic Arts)
Sid Meier's Civil War Collection (Firaxis)

The Winners

Second Runner-up:  Brigade Combat Team
First Runner-up:  Shogun - Total War
Real-Time Wargame of the Year:  Close Combat - Invasion Normandy

Comments:  We threw Combat Mission out of this category as well, but it still would have come up short against Close Combat - Invasion Normandy.  Compare the real-time and turn-based categories for both war and strategy games...in terms of number of qualified titles, they seem to be mirror images of each other.

Simulations - War
The Nominees

B-17: Flying Fortress II (Hasbro Interactive)
Combat Flight Simulator 2 (Microsoft)
Enemy Engaged Comanche/Hokum (Empire)
Half-life: Firearms Add-on (Sierra)
Steel Beasts (Shrapnel Games)

The Winners

Second Runners-up (tie): Combat Flight Simulator 2 (Microsoft), Enemy Engaged Comanche/Hokum (Empire)
First Runner-up:  B-17: Flying Fortress II
War Simulation of the Year:  Steel Beasts

Comments:  In a year with sparse competition, Steel Beasts not only dominated this category, but also had the highest single vote total of any game in any category.

Simulations - Other
The Nominees

Colin McCrae's Rally 2000 (Codemasters)
Crimson Skies (Microsoft)
Grand Prix 3 (Hasbro Interactive)
Madden 2001 (Electronic Arts)
Mechwarrior 4 (Microsoft)
Tachyon: The Fringe (Novalogic)
The Sims (Electronic Arts)

The Winners

First Runners-up (tie):  Crimson Skies, The Sims
General Simulation of the Year:  Tachyon: The Fringe

Comments:  This was sort of a catch-all category designed to separate the war simulations from the rest.  All of the nominees gained respectable vote totals, with a close race at the top.
