To the author: Great article, and makes want to dust off HOI3 actually.

Can you suggest what Mods and DLC (for HOI3) to run for someone who's looking for a lot less sandbox and a lot more historical narrative, within which I can make different Operational decisions?

The Historical Plausibility Project

The goal of this mod is to help Hearts Of Iron 3 reach its full potential as a half-historical, half-sandbox game. Since the beginning, the scope of the mod was extended. We now have some new features, some historical and some a-historical possibilities, while we are trying to improve balance, and removing the inconsistent or plain stupid features/settings.
But first of all, we intend the result to be historically plausible.

PS. You must log in and have HOI3 registered to view the modding part of the Paradox forums.

Thanx, kondor,

Sure thing!

For mods I would suggest "BlackIce": http://www.moddb.com/mods/black-ice as well as "Historical Plausibility Project" as The Fox suggests above: http://www.moddb.com/mods/the-historical-plausibility-project

I also recommend all major DLC, including Their Finest Hour, For the Motherland, and Semper Fi; check Steam for descriptions, but you can probably guess that the first enhances the U.K, the second deals with U.S.S.R., and the last U.S.A. They also improve other features like espionage. The Dies Irae pair add some more, though aren't full DLC: Gotterdammerung does some nice things for Germany, while Stars & Stripes beefs up -- you guessed it -- America.

There are more, but mostly vehicle sprites etc. -- perhaps not what you're after.

Cheers!
