I quite enjoy the area of control style of game over the hex style. Paths of Glory plays really well when you don't have to try to fit a hex grid to a movement area. AGEOD has the right idea with their games, it's a shame so much of the other mechanics suck.
Nothing worse than digging through 187 pages of manual to find the special hex movement rule dictating how to move from a desert hex to a river hex, only to find a reference to replenishing the Axis pasta water...
