I've decided to make an AAR on the forthcoming Armada 2526 Supernova (with the approval of Ntronium). This is the first time i write an AAR in the Wargamer forum....feel free to make any comments, also if you have questions.           This is what i intend to do for this AAR: i will play the humans with a large focus on the story of individuals. I am going to chose 3 other races: 2 malevolent and 1 benevolent. Turn limit will be 500 and the map will be mid-sized.           I expect to have conflict with the 2 malevolent races and i will try to get an alliance with the 3d one. So expect war, diplomacy, trade, love, sorrow and so forth. ETA for first post: tomorrow.

This should be interesting, thanks! I've had my eye on this game for a while. Could I ask a favor? Please include some technical info about how the game plays so I can get a handle on it. Creative stories (fluff) are fun, but not very useful for people trying get an idea of how much they're likely to get in to a game. I don't mean any offense. Maybe you would have done that automatically. I just wanted to mention it because some AAR authors don't. Thanks again!

By technical, do you mean gameplay etc? If yes, my intention is indeed to explain what's new in the game and how it's being played. Also, all the stories will be directely linked to what i have played.     Cheers

For those who haven't already done so, I also recommend checking out Anguille's other Armada AAR (in which he plays as the Teyes Flock), which you can get to by just clicking on the link posted in his sig.  It maybe has a little more "fluff" (as Ubercat put it), but it still gives a good idea for the feel of the game, as well as being an enjoyable read in its own right.  [

I'm very interested in this, I've been looking at Armada 2526 for awhile, and I just listened to the Three Moves Ahead episode with the developer. Btw, were you involved in Far Gate Anguille?  I beta tested that years ago, I'd completely forgot about it until I saw it in your signature.

No, i have not been involved. I just played the campaign last year and have been working on a new campaign since then. Nice game with some cool physics and ships.           Thanks Martok...just a note, the Teyes AAR in my signature is with the basic game patched to 1.4 .It is not with Supernova. A nice thing is that both can still be played so i'll keep on working on my Teyes AAR. But for the next few weeks, i'll be working on this one.           Cheers

I noticed that Gamersgate has an April 15th date scheduled for release of Supernova. That seems odd to me, given that Matrix has been rather mum on the whole thing.

^  That is indeed odd, given that Ntronium themselves have been pretty quiet on when exactly Supernova will be released, even among us beta-testers (which is presumably why Matrix hasn't said anything yet either).     That being said (and in fairness to GamersGate), I do think we're likely looking at the middle of April or thereabouts.  However, a release date is still to be confirmed.

Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its ten-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.           Chapter 1           Earth...the most amazing planet in galaxy.  After the 3d World War and under a single-government, mankind decided to colonize nearby planets. In a huge effort, 3 huge Ark Ships were built in the hope that we could find planets suitable for human life. To protect them, 3 interstellar corvettes were also built. Scanners had already shown that the system of Alcor was an habitable planet.
[image]http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/6669/94293297.jpg[/image]
Unfortunately, it seemed to be the only planet within range to offer decent conditions for colonization. Other solar systems within scanning range were unsuitable for life, at least with our current technology: irradiated planets, icy planets or no planets at all. So scientists around the globe started working on an improved version of the Ark Ships: the Super Ark which would be allow the creation of colonies on dead or icy planets.           At the same time, some unknown stars like Delta Centauri may also have good planets but we just don't know. Based on our knowledge in astronomy, yellow stars usually have a good potential but we have to go there to know for sure. So it was decided to send the USS Enterprise, a scout ship, on an exploration mission. In the same time, the Ark Ship Mother Nature, escorted by the Corvette The bold and the beautiful started it's jouney to the Alcor solar system.
[image]http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/7668/92170953.jpg[/image]
Explanations:     solar systems with * = we know the planets but not all the features. Features can only be found out with a scout ship or by creating a colony.     solar systems with ? = we have no idea what kind of planet are available.           Meanwhile, the government of Earth decided to improve the major facilities of the planet:           The colony workshop would be improved in a light technology complex, a huge mine would be built to improve the financial ressources and work on a new orbital shipyard was also started in order to allow the construction on more than 1 space ship at the time.                                     [image]http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/8347/lightindustry.jpg[/image]                     [image]http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/6317/mineyie.jpg[/image]

You would play as the Hew-Mons, wouldn't you?  How typical!  [
]  Are you playing on Normal difficulty, by the way?  Also, I was going to ask what you picked for star density -- it looks a bit sparse out there, at least at first glance.  Anyway, looking good so far!

Actually i never play with the Humans but i find it easier for the explanations. My fav races are the Teyes, Jellution (tech rave) and Cancerians (new race). Playing on expert.           I am playing with very sparse (always)....i need my space in the initial phase of a game. It makes also exploration more important. In Wars, some planets also get a very important strategic role.

I'm going to guess the crab guy in your avatar is a Cancerian, right?

Yep...Iceberg (the European distributor) has put some sets of pictures to download on their page. One of the sets is the avatars for all races. They seem dedicated to the game which is a nice change to other publishers.           Iceberg Interactive

I must say that my starting point isn't as good as i was hoping for...expansion won't be as quick as i hoped for but there's enougth room for all 4 races in the game for now. As my winning points (Humans) are based mostly on the happiness of my population, i will try to focus colonization on planets with a decent environment.   The games advisor suggested to me that i should visit the Algieba system...which i will do even though the system didn't seem interesting at first. As i still haven't produced a second scout ship, a corvette class ship will have to do it.   [image]http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/3893/19950388.jpg[/image]   2530   The Ark ship Mother Nature is about to exit Hyperspace...the captain informs the crew and the colonists:   - Friends...this is not the end of our journey but the beginning. Everyone at his position, we will exit Hyperspace in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...   And so the gigantic silhouette of the Ark Ship appeared over the planet of Alcor solar system. While the Ark Ship was being dismanteled and the first buildings set on the colony, the Corvette the bold and the beautiful was overlooking the action from orbit.   A name for the new colony was quickly found. Colonists discovered on the planet the existence of a very large type of cat which seems friendly with the Humans. The new name was given to the animals as well as to the the planet: Ubercat.   [image]http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/1682/50314391.jpg[/image]   Note: i have set at once the colonists tranports (5) of Earth on automatic and they started to transport population from Earth to Ubercat to maximise growth.   Meanwhile, the exploration ship Enterprise arrives at Delta Centauri. The scanning of the planet is promising at first but then we notice that the planet has one major default: solar flares. This is not going to make colonization easier. Solar flares will destroy/damage on a regular basis the buildings of the colony, thus slowing down the development. Furthermore, while ideal for the happiness of the humans, the planet has very view ressouces (mineral etc). Earth and Ubercat will have to bring in most of the money. I'm starting to feel warm and fuzzy.... Oh, hi Ubercat. Did you have a good nap? I'll hold you for a minute, but I need to get up soon, ok?

Thanks to the creation of the colony at Ubercat, our brand new scout ship, the Endeavour, was set on to explore the Shedar solar system which was now within range.           [image]http://img859.imageshack.us/img859/6156/84084224.jpg[/image]                    Another Solar system called Haedi by some mountain people in Switzerland, also seemed interesting. The crew of the Enterprise entered the coordinates and entered hyperspace. Would they find a new home for colonists?           [image]http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/270/91875110.jpg[/image]              Later on, the Ark Ship the Eel arrived at Delta Centauri. The colony was called then Anguille, the captain of the Ark Ship being French, he managed to convince everyone to name the planet like that even if nobody knew what it meant…           In the same year, the Enterprise arrived at Haedi…but bad surprise: no planet. With the state of the current colonization technology, this system was completely useless.           [image]http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/9717/42085573.jpg[/image]              On the Enterprise:           Captain Orient was going to two forward lounge (hey, it’s a small ship) when he met crewman Lewis.     -       Sir?     -       Yes Parker?     -       Can I express myself freely?     -       Sure you can…what bothers you.     -       Well…it’s been already 8 years since we left Earth and we’ve seen only 2 solar systems so far…2! And one of them doesn’t have a freaking planet! I was really hoping to discover the universe.     -       Mmmh…I see. You know, in a foreseeable future, the Enterprise P or Q will surely allow to make travels fasters…but until then, Mankind relies on idiots like us to waste our time discovering bits of the Galaxy…feel better now?     -       Ehm…no     -       Alright then, come with me…whiskey on me.           This one of those memorable moments on the Enterprise….

During the next years, the Enterprise visited more planets and even though there were only very few decent planets in the Universe, the Human Federation colonised new systems and expanded it's borders.           In the South of the Federation, a colony was set on a very nice planet. With surprise, colonists met a lone man on the planet unlike any other. Some kind of Ermit. So they wanted to know if he knew what was the name of the planet they were on. He replied:           [image]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/bf/Martok.jpg[/image]         - WIj pong 'oH [Martok]     - That's the name of the planet?     - Ghobe' jIH 'oH ja'ta' vetlh wIj pong 'oH [Martok]     - Oh...that's a nice name...we will keep it then.     - [Idiot] ghotpu!     And so the colony was named Martok.            Translation of what the ermit said: (1) my name is Martok.
2) No, i am telling you my name is Martok (3) stupid people.     Earth had the same kind of misunderstanding story: when Cortes arrived in Mexico (before it was called Mexico obviously) he asked a man he met on the beach:           - What is the name of this region?     - Yucatan (What do you want?)     - Ah...nice name, we'll keep it.           [image]http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/2426/63031813.jpg[/image]         In the North, other colonies were created:         Son of Monftort:  The Captain of the Ark ship was one of the descendant of an old noble french family. All colonists had a lot of admiration for him as he had managed to save the Ark Ship from a huge meteorite. The new inhabitants of that planet decided to elect him as the first president of the colony. They even built a copy of Montfort's castle from Earth. The Castle is now the official home of the presidents of Son of Montfort (of course it's possible to make visits. Please check the internet for opening hours as well as for information about the gift shop)         [image]http://www.linternaute.com/temoignage/image_temoignage/400/chateau-monfort-plus-beaux-villages-france_203737.jpg[/image]         Republic: founded by some people who, while they wanted to remain in the Human Federation, decided to create a Republic government for their planet. A Senate was created and all decisions concerning Republic were taken by it. An era of the Pax Republica lasted for many centuries.               [image]http://img852.imageshack.us/img852/7245/21983911.jpg[/image]     Republic has also some nice qualities...we will have a lot buildings here:         [image]http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/9637/40398916.jpg[/image]    Northern Sector

I have decided to focus inially my research on the Construction tech tree as well as the Weapon tech tree.           The Construction tech tree because it helps me decrease the effects of pollution with the various Weather Control Buildings, allow the creation of more efficient colonies (mines, technology complexes etc) and finally to build Ark Ships capable to colonize unpleasant planets or even systems which don't have planets. With my goal of happiness i try to avoid crappy planets but some have important ressources i may need.           [image]http://img857.imageshack.us/img857/7002/atmospheregennator.jpg[/image]                    The Weapon tech tree because i want to focus on a fleet based on carriers and the addon adds various new techs for fighters (extended fighter range, ultimate fighter, extra beam range etc). This is a technology i won't share with other races as i want to keep this advantage. First goal is now the escort carrier and then the fleet carrier.           [image]http://img809.imageshack.us/img809/2181/extendedfighterrange.jpg[/image]

The Montfort Family was dragged, kicking and screaming, into Republican government but one does what one must do for the good of the Federation. I'm enjoying this very much, and I feel like I now have a better sense of how to play, something that eluded me for quite some time with the stock version. I like the new Carnivorous plant race! I shall name them Audrey II.

[sm=7rotflmao.gif]  Well unlike poor SoM, my namesake isn't stuck running the planet named after him.  That's something, at least!  [
]  So how would you gauge your start overall, Anguille?  Going by the in-AAR comments of some of your characters, it sounds like it's a bit less than average, but that's only my own impression.  In any case, I'm enjoying it so far!  Good work as usual.  [

Indeed...this has been one of my worst galaxies so far...a lot of rubbish planets...few trade items etc...i am not going to build a large trade network in that one i fear...but it's a good change as i've had other games with lots of trade routes.           Cheers
