Hi all...I've been playing FEAR for about a week and love it. However, my rig is tad on the elderly side and occasionally locks up while running the game. I have downloaded all of the latest NVidia drivers and the game itself automatically adjusts its graphical detail to the specfic machine its running on, but i still get the occasional lockup that drains joy out of what is otherwise a great game. Any suggestions?

I'm glad my character uses a shield because I may be taking a bashing here soon.

OK, it may not be a driver issue. The next suspect is hardware. Your PC is a bit old. How does it compare to the minimum specs?

Well, the minimum specs are listed as a P4 1.7 GHz...my processor is P4 2.5 GHz. My memory is 1GB and my vid card is a NVidia 6800GT,both well beyond the minimum specs...[&

OK, next step. Have you spent any time on the support forums for the game? They may have something there. Also, have you patched the game to the latest version? I'd patch it first if you haven't, then I'd spend some time reading the support forums for advice.

Yep, the game is patched up to the latest version (1.4). It does so automatically when booted up. Haven't visited their forums yet though...

Have you had overheating issues in the past? Can you stress your CPU and check the temperature to see if that may be the issue? Do you get a similar lockup with other games? Your specs sound sufficient, I don't think its a resource shortage. Also, the 6800 GT is a rather power hungry card, if you experience similar lock ups with stressing your computer it could be a crappy powers supply unit.

Hmmm...the only game that has similarly locked up was AoE III and once I lowered the settings a bit and got the latest drivers the lockups stopped. I have the latest drivers now, but I assumed the video settings chosen by the game utility would be alright. Maybe I should manually turn them down.

Yeah start with that. What motherboard do you have? I'm assuming this is a custom built system yes?
