Just wanted to give everyone a heads-up that this game appears to have some real show-stopping bugs. I've can only get about 10 minutes in before it locks-up or CTD. According to all the postings I've read it seems the developers are pointing the finger at either the Geforce 8800 or Vista. I'm using neither - I'm using a Radeon X1950 Pro with XP Pro. The game is really great up until that point, but I'm looking for a patch soon. I just wanted to pass this along before anybody else ran out to buy it and then got hammered with the bugs. Here are my system specs for comparison purposes: Opteron 165 Biostar Geforce M9 Socket 939 mobo 4 GB OCZ Gold RAM Radeon X1950 Pro SoundBlaster Live ! XP Pro DirectX 9c 300 GB WD SATA HDD 2 NEC 16X DVD-RAM 600 Watt Ultra Xfinty PSU

I have it...I haven't had any CTDs or come across any bugs. The problem I had was with the time acceleration. If you hit the * key on the numberpad, it speeds time without telling you...and the key isn't mapped in the options either so there is no way of knowing. Anyway, you speed up time and you die from starvation really fast. I believe they used the key during beta testing and forgot to take it out. Good game though...great atmosphere and intense fire-fights...its like a role-playing FPS...

What type of vid card and CPU are you using ? I'm going to try it on my older 754-based Athlon 64 3400+ system later today- it'll be interesting to see how it works !

Hit the "/" key to return to normal time. Some people use the speeding up time to wait until morning to avoid stumbling around in the dark.

Thanks...I knew about that, but I was using the * key as my medkit key...you can probably imagine the consequences...I just remapped and now its no problem... By the way, its a great game...I'm having a lot of fun with it...

I've played for 2 or 3 hours and no crashes at all. A few things seems a little unpolished but it seems pretty good so far. Chris

I like the game also, but it is a little confusing at times. So much going on and it seems like you can mess things up by going out of sync on missions. Hope not...lol. Did things a bit bass ackwards on a couple of things, hope it works out in the end. It sure seems like they have cat eyes, man they can shoot good in the dark.lol. Mike

Would you call this a revolutionary game? Seems from what I have read, it trys a lot of stuff out of the norm of most first person shooters.

Stalker is like no game I have ever played. But it is HARD! The bandits in Garbage are attacking me in numbers and are very good at using cover and flanking tactics. No CTDs, and solid performance on a Conroe E6600, 2 gigs of RAM and a 7900 GTO card. This is a very good game, albeit a little rough around the edges.

"Revolutionary" is a strong word...not sure if I feel its appropriate to this game. However, not withstanding that sentiment, it is a unique gaming experience and worthy of any RPG or FPS enthusiasts time. The area to explore is vast and it is largely open-ended. Many opportunities for side quests and exploration, or you can stick to the main story missions and still get a good feel for the game universe. Enemy AI is great...its at the top of the list in terms of team tactics, use of cover and suppressive fire. The soviet block weapons are great and its always exciting to find a new one. Lots of great concepts like, radiation, anamolies, trade/barter and local economy are factored in. There are factions in their that you can align with or you can go it alone...I've got a number of hours in, and I feel like I'm only just scratching the surface... Oh yes...and the environmental ambience is second to none...sound, weather, terrain...its superb...just what you'd expect the haunted area around chernobyl to look and sound like in your worst nightmares...

Important Question: 1] Is the "very easy" mode really "very easy?" 2] Can you pause at any time? Although I am great at hitting moving targets with actual guns (skeet scores in the 90% range and sporting clays in the 70-80% range), my ability to play a FPS game is very limited. If there is not an absurdly easy setting, I can't really play the game. I'm real interested in the setting and the role playing elements. I love the Elder Scrolls games. The fallout games are among the best ever. The reviews and story line seem really interesting to me. But, I suck at FPS games so much it is not worth buying unless you can make the game really, really easy. Those of you who have played the game, is there an absurdly easy setting?

airboy, you are a man after my own heart! I just put the difficulty setting down to novice but I'm still getting creamed now in a bus park. However in the last attack I made before that I was on average level and it was fine - myself and my group of Stalkers took the target area. I think I might just need to find some more ammo for the machine gun I recently got. I'll let you know how I get on. Seems like a good game to me but probably needs a patch or two and don't touch it if you are running Vista. Cheers, Chris

Have any of you played through Deus Ex? Not the horrid sequel mind you, but the original? How does STALKER compare to that other FPS-RPG hybrid?

Interesting comparison...now there is a game that I would consider "revolutionary" in its time. I think I can honestly say that out of all the FPS/RPG hybrids out there, STALKER and Deus Ex compare favorably. STALKER hasn't captured me quite as tightly as Deus Ex did, but then again, I've seen and played a lot since those days... Deus Ex focused more on RPG elements than FPS elements...I'd say the opposite is true of STALKER... But yes, I would venture to say that if you enjoyed Deus Ex, you will most likely enjoy STALKER...

Based on the discussion on this thread, I decided to buy Deus Ex on Ebay for $10 (delivered). I generally don't like the genre of FPS, so why not try something that is 25% of the price, is closer to an RPG, but is similiar to STALKER first? Deus Ex also has the advantage of being "patched" and has FAQs galore. The down side of this is if I like Deus Ex a lot I will probably buy STALKER also.

I just installed S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and get a CTD everytime I try to start a new game (the menu screen loads ok) when using the dynamic lighting setting. Changing the lighting to static gets me into the game but the stuttering is unbelievable once I leave the room with the trader! I have installed the patch, as well as the latest version of DX9.0c (Feb 2007). I am using an ATI X1900gt card on an AMD 3800+/2GB RAM rig running Windows XP SP2 so I should have enough horsepower to run the game even under dynamic lighting. I would sure appreciate any thoughts on how to solve this annoying problem. This may be unrelated, but I am also getting CTDs in RTW and MTW2 everytime the games load a battle, which is odd because both games worked just fine until yesterday!

I just picked this game up and I can't stop playing it whenever I get a free chance. It is just one of those games that seems to transcend it's genre. The game is just immersive and the AI kicks your ass at the beginning. Plus the game is scary as hell, though nothing is like Alien vs. Predator. Those red blips on the radar closing in all around you in a darken corridor... I have had a couple CTDs, but nothing that makes the game unplayable. My problem is that my drivers for my GFX card are a tad bit on the dated side due to ATI's lack of support for mobile GFX cards in laptops made by companies that they do not have deals with. So the drivers that should work with my card do not. But other then that the game plays like a dream. The Chaos Project

Shelldrake, I'm using a X1950 Pro and things were running smooth with the patch until last night... then bango....three ctd's in a row. It's gotta be an ATI driver thing. I'm using a Biostar Geforce 6100 M9 motherboard. I notice the X1900 series card shave been having issues with certain chipsets as well - hopefully a solution will surface soon. ....UPDATE..... Just found this post in a forum... I'm going to try disabling the dynamic lighting. Due to the increasing amount of emails, we want to clear up a bit of confusion about some of these stability issues with the game ‘S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl’. The source of all these issues is not overheating, our drivers, hardware issues or anything else. The problem lays inside the game’s dynamic lighting renderer (DX9), and the only known workaround is to use Static lighting renderer (DX
instead. You can stop emailing us now. However, You should contact the game developers instead, and ask them to patch their broken game; and if you can do us a favor, please ask them to fix their Widescreen/OpenAL/Surround implementation as well. Áëàãîäàðèì Âû.

MIGMaster, Thanks for the input. What driver set are you using? I am using catalyst 6.9 which until recently worked fine with all my games. I could try moving to the latest 7.3 drivers but am reluctant to introduce a new variable into the equation. Farcry, GalCiv2 and Wings Over Europe are still working fine but I have to wonder whether my problems with Stalker and the 2 latest Total War games are related. I will test some other graphics intensive games with my current setup when I get home tonight.
