Essentially its an earlier version of company of heroes in space. The campaign map is useless and only lends itself to zooming into a standard RTS game really. So you start with a squad and a base and build from their, you capture points and hold them to gain more points that enable more buildings. Its this capture the points system that lends to fluid gameplay. I guess another way of describing it would be, Battlefield2 zoomed out. Except that you get free re-enforcements of your choosing for every point you hold for X period. You can equip your squads however you like, give them chain guns, give another man in the squad a rocket launcher etc.   The game is aimed at both fans and teen to adult. A good comparison is to ask yourself who Company of Heroes is aimed at? Its not a wargame people, but for 40k fans, its the closest we have yet and the animations are excellent. Another awesome aspect is the army painter. Put your own symbols on the soldiers and colour their armour etc.   Hope that helps

I've been interested in trying this but I worry that it is mostly a multiplayer game. Any thoughts from guys who've been playing it.

nahhh, it plays well single player... the AI really gives you a run for your money..... but more in a rush kinda way. Frantic defending. Here is some old fraps from my games with friends to give you an idea of gameplay features and help you make your minds up. I should also mention that these shots are low res to make online gaming smoother. Don't wanna miss the shot because my graphics are stuttering. Animations and Voice Overs (especially marines sound excellent) are superb Each side has major differences in style of play, some not even having to gather resources at all for instance, others being pure defensive.. some being pure mobile offense. Their are currently, space marines supper humans, orks, eldar(elves), chaos devil worshipping anti-marines, imperial guard puny humans, Tau honor bound goat people and necrons or spider souls inserted into ancient machines people. An imperial guard squad with a supertank in support. Notice my lovely orange colour scheme and corny name LOL... this is an RTS not a wargame. [image]http://www.cramthelan.com/files/12/W40kWA%202006-09-20%2020-57-30-26.jpg[/image] you can see the base building here. You have power and aquisition points. THe aquisition points roll in faster as you raise your banner upon catpuring the points on the maps. The glowing blue towers are power generators. THeir is an AQ point their in the lower right. Looks here like a lot of dead after an ork force attempted to overrun my base. Only a heroe and some marine scouts left. [image]http://www.cramthelan.com/files/12/W40kWA%202006-09-09%2017-10-15-58.jpg[/image] the remaining terminators from a squad, notice I have queued the squad to re-enforce in the menu and that two heavy weapons have also been assigned [image]http://www.cramthelan.com/files/12/W40kWA%202006-09-09%2000-05-52-59.jpg[/image] the lobby, you can see most of the setup options and even the colour schemes peoples armies will be wearing. All of this can be set to random though. [image]http://www.cramthelan.com/files/12/W40k%202006-09-19%2021-29-22-07.jpg[/image] The army painting studio.... you play around with this while waiting for people to join. Lots of fun and almost unlimited colour schemes. We iumported a lot of icons floating around the internet to make for more varied banner and shoulder patch icons. [image]http://www.cramthelan.com/files/12/DarkCrusade%202006-10-28%2009-06-25-18.jpg[/image] here are a couple of squads from two different teams supporting each other. My marines with purple arm colour are kneeling while capturing a point. My Buddy has a jetpack marine close quarter expert squad close by in case I need em. You can also see a banner I made on the flag, the dead diggers chapter lol [image]http://www.cramthelan.com/files/12/W40kWA%202006-08-27%2023-21-08-03.jpg[/image]

Thanks destraex. The armor looks a lot like the marine armor from Space Hulk which is probably one of the best games nobody played.

I played it for a short time. Your talking about the one with the Terminators that used to light up whole rooms with their flamers. Another thing to note is that their are huge amounts of mods for this game including one called,............ Space Hulk [link=http://www.spacehulk.i8.com/]http://www.spacehulk.i8.com/[/link]   The AI trouncing us... we did manage to beat the ai consistently on expert though   [image]http://www.cramthelan.com/files/12/W40kWA%202006-08-26%2020-53-22-29.jpg[/image]

Good question. Space Hulk takes place in the 40K universe.

heh Spacehulk - great game, loads of atmosphere. Space Marines vs Genestealers. Bit like a board game version of the film 'Aliens'. reminds me that its twenty years since WH40K first appeared. TWENTY YEARS [X(] [link]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogue_Trader_%28Warhammer_40%2C000%29[/link] Now I feel old ! I thought Dawn of War was 'quite good' but limited itself by following the same old RTS formula. The WH40K universe is really crying out for a first person shooter or maybe a Massively multiplayer online game. [i]"In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war."[/i]

I've never played MP and had it a long time. Besides the campaign their are custom games and lots of maps to use so their hours of gameplay just playing the custome maps. Infact I've played the custom games much more than the campaign.

There were also two 40K FPS games set in the Space Hulk world. One was just called Space Hulk and the other was Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels. Although they would probably qualify as poor games, I was such a 40K fanatic that I loved them..."brother! Fear not thy enemy! They are an abomination!!!"

I remember Space Hulk although I don't think I played it. Don't know if anyone remembers the computer remakes of the Games Workshop board games, Heroquest & Space Crusade? I had them on the Amiga some years ago and loved them .. well Space Crusade as HQ was a bit basic. Great games though as you could have a few of your friends play too.

Blood Angels is the one I played. I thought it was pretty good. The bad guys popping out of walls. Creepy noises. Squishing the enemy with your glove when your weapon jammed. Of course I didn't even know that it was a Warhammer game, so my opinion and two nickles may get you a dime. Jarhead you're right the dialogue was good. The Marines would always say something when they were killed off and not just the usual Uuuggghhh. Also something like "Emperor bless our weapons!"

This was Firewarrior or what I presume. It s***d great time since it was much rather a promotion support tool for the new Tau race instead of being a REAL 40K fps. I mean who wants to play pacifist pussies with rail guns, when you can be either a Space Marine or a Chaos fanatik, not to mention orks. Waaaaaaaaaaaaagh! After a good RTS which is DoW, the 40K universe literally screams for a good fps. There is a MMORPG IIRC or is it only for fantasy?

Yea as I mentioned earlier Fire Warrior was a terrible game. Fortunately I didn't buy it when it came out and ended up getting it for 99p a few months after release so I'm happy I didn't pay full price for it.   I'm more a Warhammer Fantasy player than a 40k. When the Warhammer (Fantasy Battle) system was taken over by 40k I wasn't happy. Infact I stopped buying White Dwarf magazine as it was full of 40k stuff. As for the comp games though
awn of War is a classic. I also enjoyed Mark of Chaos but it's not a custom game system so you get to play the campaign and that's it whereas DoW has massive replayability though it's custom games.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but MoC has single player skirmish maps and an army builder. It may not be as robust as the skirmish suite in DoW, but it is available nonetheless. I loved MoC too and thought the great campaigns made it worth the price of admission, with or without the SP skirmish replayability.

Actually you maybe right there thinking about it. I was sure it was just a campaign but I seem to remember something about the Army builder now. Will have to load it up again tonight and check. I also loved the Shadow of the Horned Rat and Dark Omen games although I doubt they'd even load up on my comp now but for the time they were very original games.

Ok I see there are lot of WH40K geeks here[
] and they scream for a good fps in this universe so maybe this should interest you![
] [link]http://www.rivalspecies.com/[/link] Honestly I haden't time to try it since fps are not my first interest of game type even if I still enjoy some of them like vietcong or operation flashpoint, speaken of operation flashpoint I have heard a rumour that there would be also a WH40K mod avaible![X(]
