Well, Dale and I are starting to slug it out in DF85 PBEM. In all my wargaming I've never played against a live opponent. This is much scarier and so much more exciting. As opposed to AI, Dale is more ellusive and unpredictable. I hope my WP guys can overwhelm him before he has a chance to open his can of whoop @$$. Unlikely but I'm looking forward to each turn...

Glad to hear it...I think once you get into the PBEM groove you will rarely play the AI anymore. I keep at least 6 PBEM games going at any given time, in various titles.

Yeah, I think I'll end up doing multiple games next time to make up for down time in between turns.  I didn't know I would be anticipating my opponent's turn this eagerly.

Oh yeah...at times I've had 20+ games going, but that requires a lot of free time...5-10 is the ideal window I think.

I have found that, since I started playing PBEM, I have a hard time taking the AI seriously -- other than for quick checks to test out some kind of gameplay mechanic. (Even though it can quite probably still obliterate me just as well as a human opponent!) Not sure why that is... maybe I think it tends to "cheat" since it really has access to all the numbers and whatnot that are "under the hood". When playing against another human, I already know what the player can/can't see and do; his screen looks the same as mine. I also have a hard time thinking that the AI can come up with a cohesive "strategy" and is just moving in response to a pre-programmed set of instructions; that kind of thing can't match human ingenuity. At least, not yet.

Exactly.  The AI doesn't seem to launch surprise attacks, exploit mistakes/weaknesses, and methodically hunt down weaker units (arty and HQ).  It tends to get gamey sometimes like stacking all gunships against armor like I experienced in FG85.  But I suppose a human opponent could do this too.   I still think the series is very fun and the AI is fine.  It just doesn't have "character".
