In case anyone hasn't been checking the weather lately, things aren't looking so good in the gulf. Most of the time these are bad but not critical.  However, in the case of New Orleans, the levies aren't ready yet and Gustav appears to be looking for a target and most models are indicating it's headed North. Maybe the government should spend some money on the levées? There's obviously spare cash in the system if they can earmark $20 Billion for Georgia's reconstruction. (It must have been a rainy night in Georgia... [

Those projected storm tracks for Gustav sure look ominous. Having once weathered a hurricane myself(Juan in 2003), I can certainly appreciate the concerns of those living in the Gulf states and especially in New Orleans. I hope that everyone manages to stay safe in the coming days.

As a former resident of Southwest Florida (fifteen years), I weathered many hurricanes.  2003 was the year of the hurricane (Charlie, Ivan, Jeanne and one more that currently escapes me).  I am here to tell you that they are no joke.  There is no place in SW Fla. that is more than twelve feet above sea level.  That's thirty feet higher than New Orleans.    It just seems to me that if you choose to live in areas that are prone to natural disasters, that as a community, you should band together to make your environment as safe as possible.

I'm in the Florida panhandle. I'll post some "action as it happens" reports if it comes my way from my iPhone. Unless of course I become "embedded" in the hurricane.

Yes, you seem to have put on your Hurricane Repellant today. The good news is Gustav is now looking like it will hit as a 2.

@Ox Good luck in the Panhandle Ox.  Depending on direction and size, we may get some residual in North Alabama. @ Starfury If I had known you were in Sarasota, I would have deflected Charlie in '03 towards you and let YOU deal with it.  I'm sure you would have known what to do with it (This is not the city you are looking for). @ bboyer HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA  you have obviously had the pleasure of driving in that area.  You forgot the driving in the left lane doing 45 in a 70 with the blinker on part.

I lived just south of you for fifteen years.  Saw my share of storms.  The unfortunate thing about posting is, not everyone is skilled at humor and I believe my attempt fell flat.

Just read over the CNN ticker and yeah, reports are that sustained winds are 150+ and its getting stronger...worse than Katrina for New Orleans? That city now has a mandatory evacuation too. Sounds like a real Holy Jesus of storms.

I'm glad my character uses a shield because I may be taking a bashing here soon.

The only thing I can think of right now is Lloyd Bridges shouting, "It's coming right at us!" and jumping through a window in an air traffic control tower. I can't wait for the news to create graphics showing how we're all going to be underwater soon.

I just caught the news this morning - looks grim for Louisiana residents but at least New Orleans is being evacuated well before Gustav makes landfall. My thoughts and prayers are with all those who are affected by the storm, especially any of the WG gang who are in Gustav's path. Take care.

Longblade: You have lost your mind if you have not already fled (you live in the New Orleans area if memory serves). I was on I-85 within 50 miles of the Georgia border a few minutes a go.  Traffic was very, very heavy heading East towards Atlanta.  It looks like all of the hotels are sold out short of Atlanta. If you don't have anywhere else to go, contact me through my normal email that I used to register for the site.  We have a spare bedroom (and four bathrooms and only 2 people).  Staying there is not worth dying for. All: Thank you for the kind thoughts.  We actually live about an hour west of NOLA.  In addition, yesterday we evacuated (long story) to my parents' house which is over the Ozark Mountains in Missouri.  We're fine.  We will return quickly as my wife is a 1st responder for her company, but our house has a generator, food, and water which should get us through the worst of the aftermath. Thank you all for your kind thoughts and offers for assistance.  The kindness of wargamers continues to humble me.

Don't be fooled, LB.  We're all just hoping to get a cush gig at Wargamer.Com, and I'm hoping your Scandanavian Wife has a little sister, cousin, friend with questionable morals, whatever ...

Hey Longblade, where at in MO are you staying?  I was in Joplin today, I live just over the KS/MO border.  Just curious.

Quite a few on this board are Fl residents. Most of the forums I frequent have few if any Floridians. My family moved to Hollywood in 1964, 2 days before Cleo arrived. Lived in Ocala 81-86 and Lakeland 86-98. Now a Georgia peach. I have been in more storms than I can remember. Of course might be due to age. Anyhow I hope that all is well for you and yours forumites.

[sm=fyi[1].gif] The name that currently escapes you is Frances and btw the year was 2004 not 2003. An interesting year to say the least. [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_Atlantic_hurricane_season]2004 Hurrican Season[/link]

I know you were being Sarcastic, but if you end up [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jinx]jinxing[/link] it I'm going to be so pissed at you [sm=cussing.gif] considering I'm not to far north of you and a hit in Sarasota doesn't bod well for my area.  [sm=00000924.gif]

Hi all.  Thanks for the kind thoughts.  We're fine here.  About 90% of the city is without power.  However, we have a generator and I just set my phone up for 3G service from AT&T before the storm hit.  So while my internet speed isn't fast, it works.  w00t! We're doing well.  The house was spared any damage.  One benefit of the trend to clearcutting all trees to build a home is that we didn't have any large trees to fall on the house.  That isn't the same elsewhere - most yards have at least one large tree blown over, some have several.  We're now keeping an eye on the three sisters in the Atlantic.  Hanna looks like it won't amount to too much, but Ike (we'll call this one a sister for the sake of just tweaking our nose at it) looks like it could be serious.  We'll have to see about Josephine.  Hopefully Florida will be spared.  Keep us posted on how things are going.

LB, I am glad to hear that you and family have returned to livable conditions. It looks like what is left of Hanna will be paying a visit to Nova Scotia this weekend. Hopefully it won't amount to much. I really don't want another tree on the house - the 40 foot blue spruce that clipped the house during Juan was quite enough!

Looks like we are going to miss Hanna here in SC. It looks like Ike and Josephine are too close to call yet.  I was here attending college in Charleston for Hugo and I definately dont want to repeat that again as a homeowner this time.  Luckily we built our house and I specifically planned how the drainage was going to work around the house so I dont think we will have anything more than a few puddles if there is any flooding.  Wind may be a different story but we cant control that.

Run away!!
