And Emanuel isn't exactly the fresh face of "Change" that Barry O promised either.
The next four years are gonna be a hoot! I just gonna sit back and enjoy.

Let's see how the balance of the Obama administration comes out. Having an effective Chief of Staff tells me one thing so far: Obama intends to be effective. That's good enough for me.

I mean really.... even Rove couldnt have staged the timing of obamas grandmothers passing any better.

I don't know Emmanuel from a hole in the wall but a sneakier Rove sounds like a new level of Evil.
I'm glad my character uses a shield because I may be taking a bashing here soon.

That is exactly right. Too early to judge, and Chief of Staff is a position where you want a guy like Emmanuel.

I think that says something about those said concerns did not actually come from the Jewish community, but instead by pundits. Obama's results were a 4% pickup from 2004.$0$0$0$0Emanuel, I believe, was a smart choice. Even though he is a partisian in some areas, he is not a hardcore liberal, rather a left-center Dem. His partisianship does not come from extreme ideals, but rather his belief in the issues that he supports. He has been able to reach across to Conservatives in order to get issues done, the problem is that he is been known to rub people the wrong way in certain situations. We shall see if his tone shifts in line with that of Obama or the same problems continue.$0$0$0$0$0Thats my two cents.$0$0$0$0$0The Chaos Project$0

With all due respect, I guess is that there is nothing you can really do in the world to silence people who believe something like that ... but Israel and the wish to get stuff done and have someone with experience probably played some role (I personally don't see anything wrong with this motivation).
I find it quite interesting that some people here on the boards, who would probably cheer for a outspoken, tought guy like Rahmi if he would be on the other political side now call the same character traits sneaky and even suggest that the death of Obama's grandmother might be staged ...

I also followed stories in Jewish media, starting with the Cleveland Jewish News and the Jewish Chronicle in Pittsburgh (I'm not Jewish, but I'm often in places where these papers are on the table). The support for Obama among Jews was a frequent subject in both, as well as Ha'aretz (which I sometimes read online). One of the things that struck me a lot was that nobody could really figure out why Jews were collectively among Obama's most dependable supporters, but in the two American papers, there appeared to be a general agreement that supporting him was a very good thing.
The question of Obama's support for Israel came up a lot, expecially in Ha'aretz, and that was where I saw probably the most agreement. Writers in general in all three stated that there was no longer the strong, almost visceral support for Israel that the country had enjoyed in decades past, and so it was no longer a litmus test for Jewish support of a candidate. Domestic policies and ideology are far more crucial. So was disgust with George W. Bush. Like it or not, he was the eight-hundred-pound gorilla in the voting booth.

Obama can scale down on support for Israel, but all that means is that Israel no longer has to play by our (USA) rules. They can settle things any way they like. Take U.S. backing away and you take the leash off the dog..........that won't end well for Israel's neighbors if they decide to poke them with a stick.
As far as Emanuel is concerned, here are some fun facts:
1. He was Bill Clinton's finance committee chairman for his campaign
2. He was a senior adviser in the Clinton administration
3. He once mailed a dead fish to a Republican Pollster. (is this guy Jewish or Sicilian?)
4. And I also heard something about him stabbing a table with a steak knife at a dinner during the '96 campaign.
My point was that he's not exactly a fresh face in Washington. Obama keeps talking about "change" and a new way of doing business, but I'm seeing the same old faces so far.
Let's wait and see. [sm=00000613.gif]

Emmanuel (who I think is Jewish, could be wrong) may be a fighter and at times a party hack, but he loves to talk. He is on speaking terms with most of the republicans in congress and is a do-er and a deal maker, not someone acting from a rigid ideology. He excecutes his mission, which for years is getting votes in congress. As an Obama supporter, I would have prefered a fresher face but upon reading up on the guy and talking to a friend who talked to Emmanuel for a while at the victory party, the pick was mostly about it being someone Obama knew, who was well organized, could run the white house, and was on good terms with Capitol Hill. A little nuts he may be, but he is much more practical than that voting record shows.
So while the guy may not represent "change" in some sense. Change meant three main things to his supporters-new directions in foreign policy, economic policy, and a move away from partisan-ideology based politics into something more inclusive and accepting of different view points. The jury is certianly out as to which of these points Emmanuel represents, but his job is now to do what his boss wants, and he has always been veery good at that. he may end up being the facilitator of a lot that happens in the next two years, which I think will be mostly pretty good.

Hey now! Don't go there! I'm still trying to get over the fact that the "No Man's Land" thread has nothing to do with sapphic porn!
