I've mentioned on at least one prior occasion the feeling that a striking percentage of comments in the gaming forum these days are negative in nature and consist of complaints, flames and criticisms...So, with that in mind, in an effort to bridge the gap and reunite the community, I'd like to start a thread in which we can all post some positive and ONLY our positive recent gaming experiences...I don't want to hear about games that were released 10 years ago and I don't want to hear about near misses, almost greats or could have beens.  Please pick a particular moment in recent gaming history that really reminded you about why you post in this forum and play wargames...if you can't think of anything applicable, please don't post here, but please try to contribute to the thread. While I'm waiting for my digital download of Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising to finish, I'll start the ball rolling with Darkest of Days...I'm picking to talk about this title for a reason and its perfect for this thread.  Its a game that was pretty much universally destroyed by the commercial reviewers, but in the last month or so, its a game that has provided with a lot of fun. One moment that stands out in particular was marching through a wheat field with a Regiment of Union soldiers...reaching a clearing, we walked into a Regiment of Rebels waiting for us, muskets aimed...the feeling of impending horror was palpable.  Not a second went by before a Southern voice yelled the order to fire and all hell broke loose.  The roar of musket fire, the screams of the dying, troops dropping to me left and right and smoke from the black powder obscuring the field.  This was a really well done moment, loaded with atmosphere and extremely unique.  I strongly believe that Darkest of Days is the first title to attempt 19th century warfare and make it fun.  There are several moments like this in the game, and for this, the developers should take a bow.

This is just off the top of my head.  I'll have to think of a few more. - Thoroughly getting my ass kicked the the AI in Korsun Pocket (not THAT old)
- getting knifed by Longblade multiple times in COD 4: MW.  Stealthy bastard.  Shouts out to rest of the gang here as well! - reliving childhood memories playing the recent version of Sid Meiers Pirates!

Good idea Jarhead. Recent posative moments:         Tropico 3- the demo being solid and fun and picking up my legal from Gametrader for free as part of the deal for doing thier website in 3d. (not until next week). Not really a wargame but certainly a strategy title with troops attacking in rebellion- for what reason I'm not sure because i'm the best dictator to ever hit an island.         Talking my way into the back room at the Brothel in Risen was a lot of fun. I'm not sure if I "had' to sleep with her- but who wants to take any chances.         Okay being plumeted by that club that Ogre was wielding was a downer but thus far I've pulled at least 35 hours of enjoyable gaming from the title. I felt I acomplished something helping Rasquel, the female bar owner escape town in pursuit of her father. I'll need to touch base with her at the beach soon.

I started playing Clear Sky not too long ago.  It has the same creepy vibe as the original, but I find it more difficult to get started.  Save often is the rule...

I agree with Ghostryder, the Tropico 3 demo being clearly a quality product was a huge surprise and a very welcome one. I love the propaganda radio and the updated by classic feel. I also agree with Ghostryder, despite my DRM problems and some performance snags, Risen is an excellent RPG that is hard as nails but keeps you coming back. Finally getting my mage's robes and shooting magic bullets at wolves is one of the neatest feelings, considering the 15+ hours is took just to get my player class established!! One of my own awesome moments was getting to review AI War and find out that, indeed, a smaller and lower budget studio can produce something fun, inventive, full of strategy but easy to play (albeit the sessions are pretty long, a plus in some ways). Not only did my first playthrough offer awesome stuff, I feel like I get a new experience with every patch, as Arcen Games is committed to updating graphics, adding new ships, and tweaking the experience to be perfect. The game was wholly playable at release, but is progressing almost like a beta - with new tricks and turns to keep things fresh just when you surpass the last round of stuff. Lastly, and I think I made this clear with my customized post on this - the turned based, squad/team based play of Bloodbowl got my... uh... blood truly pumping with its X-Com meet Mutant League Football fun. Every move is calculated, every step important, every victory sweet and every defeat bitter. What other game can make you feel like that!? Great topic JH! SoM

Well, it wasn't a wargame, but this gaming moment sure tickled me.          I'm playing Worldwide Soccer Manager, managing English League 2 Weymouth in the playoff final for promotion to League 1.  We're playing in neutral-site Wembley Stadium against a favored Swindon squad.  The game starts poorly as my young center-back blunders a feed from our keeper, allowing an easy goal.  It's an uphill struggle from there, but finally it's 2-2 late in the match.  As the clock edges towards the final 90:00 mark (and extra time if we're tied), I'm getting a bad vibe - Swindon has the momentum and it just feels like we're going to lose this one at the last moment.  Then...         ...my veteran winger gets loose on the right and dribbles down into the corner.  There are two Swindon defenders between him and the promised land, but this guy (his name is Gavin Redmond) has great ball skills and an almost-magical ability to cut along the end line.  He starts to make this patented move, and my butt lifts off the computer chair in expectation...he rounds one defender, then the next, and is clear on face-to-face with the enemy keeper.  But the angle is too tight!  Typically, he has a bit more room to maneuver at this point, but the Swindon keeper is right on top of him...yet suddenly Redmond snaps a shot up over the keeper's left shoulder!  It's impossible but true, GOAL!!!  It must have clipped the guy's ear on its way in.  Unreal!  I giggle like a little kid getting candy.  Victory, promotion, individual glory - it makes my day.  What a moment.

Paint the night with battle cries.

I recently played Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl for the first time, and I have to say that it gave me the exact kind of positive vibes that Jarhead's talking about. System Shock 2, Thief, Deus Ex... I didn't think anyone still made games like that, but Stalker proves me wrong. What I love the most is that it forces me to get "in character" in a way that I've rarely experienced. If I'm going to survive in the Zone, I need to start thinking and acting like a real stalker would. I need to be constantly hyper-aware, a little paranoid, and ready to make snap fight, run, or hide decisions. The moment I let my guard down in this game, I get my ass kicked. One incident really sticks out in my mind. I was in the eastern part of the Zone (the Dark Valley, I want to say), and I had to infiltrate a bandit camp to find some information. The bandits had occupied an old factory complex that was rapidly crumbling to its foundations, but they'd thrown up some guard towers and barricades. However, across the road from the complex was its delivery warehouse and a three story office building. It would give me enough height to pick off the guards in the towers and anyone in the courtyard. I went into the office building and noticed there were streaks of blood on the walls and floor. That made me suspicious, so I did a quick sweep of the building. It was clear, although there was a utility closet with a couple bodies lying inside. Not a big surprise: the Zone is littered with bodies, right? As I walked past, however, one of the bodies on the floor started begging for me to help. In retrospect, I cannot believe alarm bells didn't start going off. I was too fixated on the bandits across the road, and besides, it was still daylight. I didn't stop to put the pieces together. Instead, I just walked up to this dude to heal him with my medkit. As I crouched next to his body, he started screaming and died before I could heal him. Then I heard this slurping noise from right next to me, followed by a shriek. A bloodsucker de-cloaked from its position over this guy's chest. It had been there with me the entire time. This pile of bodies was its refrigerator. I just freaked. I shoved my chair back from my monitor a good foot, my jaw dropped, and I just panic-fired an entire clip from my AK-74 into this thing. Then I tried to pull my pistol rather than reload, but my finger missed the button and I pulled my knife instead. Screw it, I just started cutting on this thing while it was shredding me with its claws. However, the shooting and the cutting did enough damage to make this thing dart out of the room before it could kill me. I stood there for a second, bleeding out, then remembered to use my medkit. I healed, then slammed another clip into the AK and went after the little bastard. I met him just outside the closet as he came charging back for more. I blasted it again, but these things take a lot of killing and they move fast. The clip exhausted, I switched to my pistol and finished him off with a half-dozen rounds to the chest. By the time he dropped, I'd been backed up against the wall. I got sloppy and I fixated on my own objectives rather than pay close attention to the environment. In most games, the environment doesn't really matter. In Stalker, it's the star of the show and your most dangerous opponent. I wrote a couple blog entries on it, if you're interested. One last thing if you haven't played Stalker in awhile. You really owe it to yourself to try out the Stalker Complete 2009 mod. It's an unbelievable achievement, basically bringing the game up to modern graphics standards, fixing and improving a slew of features, and making the world a lot more convincing. Hell, even the music that the guitarists play has been replaced with live tracks from professional musicians.

Not sure how far back we can go...i play many games that have been release long ago (because i didn't have time to play before). So this weeks top moments:           Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne: i played this week the additional campaign with Rexxar. One of the top moment is when Rexxar has to win a duel with the Orc's boss in order to take other the clan...really nice battle. All in all this campaign is terribly addictive and i've had a glimpse of what WoW is...very tempting but won't go for it otherwise i will finish broke and alone. Blizzard is EVIL!           Strength & Honor: playing as India, my daughter, who was also my Prime Minister, took the lead of a civil war against me! In the end, after taking control of her capital and as she was stuck in a single city, she decided to surrender...now we're again family! i gave her full control of her city...let's hope she'll be happy with it...     Cheers     PS: check my blog...

Games i play now:

Armada 2526 Supernova, Commander: the Great War, Heroes of Annihilitated Empires, The Great Battles Collection

AGEODs AACW.  Whether it was luck or good AI, I have no idea.  I spent about 8 months (game time) planning an invasion of Tennessee from Bowling Green, Kentucky.  My plan was to swoop down and skirt the Rebel Army in Nashville (1 Corps) by moving southward, west of Nashville with my right flank protected by my control of Island #10 and ft donaldson at teh confluent of teh Missisippi and another river.  Well, I did so with Grants army consiting of 2 Corps and and 2 attached brigades for garrison.  I skirted Nashville and moved southeast in an effort to cut off the army there and starve it out.         Unfortunately, I failed to properly recon with my cavalry and did not notice two more corps of Bragg's Army of Tennessee moving towads Nashville from Chattanooga.  These two corps moved by my left flank (thats is when I detected them), passed through NAshvile and launched an invasion into Kentucky.  I stopped my Army still confident that even if Bowling green were taken, i could resupply via the river and Island #10.  Next turn the two Confederate Corps took Bowling Green while the corp that had been at nashville moved to Island #10 leaving a substantial (full brigade w/ heavy arty) behind in NAshvile. The ISland fort was taken as I left only militia there to garrison and has moved the artillery to another fort.             Although Grant was active next turn, a spring storm turned the whoel area into mud. Now, my supply line to Bowling green has been cut and I cannot get river supply becuase I no longer control a harbor in tennessee for my transports to unload.  Grant, is now, cut off from supply as I contemplate my next move.  The problem for me is that if I fight and lose, I cannot retreat through enemy controlled  areas (north) which means I would be driven farther south.  I could try for memphis but  with dwindling supply and mud in my way, I may end up laying siege to the city with minimal supplies.  I could try to take back island #10 or the forts on the west side of the mississippi to enable supplies to come down that river instead of the river running past Island #10 (tennesee river I think?) but I have insufficient forces and lack control of the river for a crossing.         In the end, poor planning, poor recon, underestimating the AI and an insistance on using civil war foot based armies in a modern maneuver strategy cost me an entire army.  Over time, a series of battles designed to allow my army to get back into supply resulted in all but about one division being destroyed. (the last was able to take back Island #10 and hunker down)  The confederates were left in full control of Tennessee and southwestern Kentucky.  Only two cavalry divisions in central kentucky were able to blunt the advance by cutting supply (althout the AI is still somewhat suicidal in charging forward without supply lines).         Over all, a grim but exciting gaming experience by one of the best Ai's around.  It is unusual for the AI to launch such a coordinated attack to be sure...but it does happen enough that you need to plan for it.

Mikeck - I always thought about striking into Kentucky (playing as the CSA).  It is interesting to know that the AI had the same strategy.  Did he try at all to protect his supply lines?  I guess from your story I am picturing a CSA bulge into Kent. ala WWII. What year was this (early or late in the game)?

Hmm... people are saying Stalker and System Shock 2 in the same breath... now I am curious. I was sure there was a sale for it, but I must have missed it. No demo, I guess (would like to see my performance with it). SoM

It was spring 1863.  AI didnt seem too interested in protecting his supply lines but it didnt really need too.  AI still had NAshville which is a huge depot and right across the river from Bowling Green.  I, however, was in enemy territory with an extended supply line.  In order to even hamper the AI's supply I would have had to take enough cities in Tennesse for it to revert to Union control and hope that his forces in NAshville out-eat teh amount of supply teh city produces...pretty difficult to do with an out of supply force that is also outnumbered and slogging through mud.           I think it may have been more a coincidence than a planned counter attack but it these types of things that force you to recon and secure supply lines.           No wonder SHerman's March to the Sea was such a big deal.

SoM my rig is quickly approaching 3 years old. I will let you know how STALKER runs on mine. The game itself is about 3 years old so I am not anticipating any problems. I'm going to take advantage of the mod that Flitcraft posted above too.         Giddy as a schoolgirl for this one seeing all the good vibes about in this thread.         Your thread idea is working wonders, Jarhead!

Hmmm...something positive.... How's this?  I am positive I will save money this fall by not buying any of the games I had an eye on over the summer because every last one has proven to be bad?  Saving money is a positive thing, right? I am positive I will continue enjoy years-old games like Civ 4.  By the looks of this thread, a lot of others have to dig into the past to find something positive as well.

Positive experience with the Tropico 3 demo.  I loved the ability to "neutralize" my opponent in the upcoming election and when that didn't even work for long to just cancel the elections anyway.  Great dictatorial fun. Civ 4 - I love the exploration phase where I am still discovering the map looking to see what locations would make a great city. Any time my Union generals get initiative in WBTS.  Sit there on pins and needles waiting. and most recently Pro Cycling Manager ( yes obviously not a wargame and quite a niche game to be fair)  getting one of my riders into the right breakaway or pulling a breakaway back  or making an attack up the mountain and seeing the riders energy bar disappear slower than I thought so that his attack sticks.
