Status : Offline | interesting...is this a name change from Tank Aces Online?
I posted this at SimHQ back in Dec 2009. It appears all the links for Tank Aces Online are now broken.
This looks like a fun, arcadey-type FPS with tanks game so I am not sure if it belongs in the tank sim forum. The reload times on the tank main armaments in the vid are very very very fast! LOL
How the heck do these "free online games! no need to buy anything!" games work? I'm guessing you are stuck puttin' around in a little M3 Stuart or T-26 unless you fork over some cash to the developer to buy a Sherman, PanzerIV, Tiger, etc.?
edit...small FAQ
Congratulations! You've found Tank Ace, the best free to play WWII shooter around!
"That's great," you may say, "but what IS Tank Ace?"
We launch Closed Beta on December 17. Until then, I'll give you a preview about what you can expect.
I. FACTIONS
You can choose to join one of three different sides from World War II: Russia, Germany, and USA.
Each faction gains access to a unique stable of historic tanks, uniforms, and in-game items.
II. CHARACTER CREATION
There's no discrimination in Tank Ace. Be a Tank Boy or Tank Girl!
III. TANKS
This is a game about Tank Warfare! Each tank has it's own historically accurate stats. You can customize your tank by adding additional armor as well as different styles of camouflage, body art, kill marks, and clan insignias.
USA Tanks
- M4A3 75mm Late Production
- M4A3E8 "Easy Eight"
- Cromwell Mk.IV (yes, I know it's actually a British tank)
German Tanks
- Panzer IV F/2 Version
- Panzer IV J scherzen
- Jagdpanzer 38 Hetzer
Russian Tanks
- T-34/76 Mod 1943
- SU-76M
IV. CONTROL STYLE
Tank Ace is essentially a fast paced third-person shooter. You drive your tank using the WASD keys. Use the mouse to rotate the turret, aim, and fire.
You can select various views on the fly, such as the Commander View, Gunner View, Driver View, and Scout View. Each view has it's own benefits and drawbacks. Choose the best one for the situation you find yourself in.
V. TACTICS
If you feel like being a cowboy and charging headlong into the fray, be my guest. But don't be surprised if you get picked off by an enemy that you didn't even see.
Use terrain features like hills and trees to wait in ambush. Coordinate an assault with your team mates. Call in Air Support to scout out an enemy stronghold and take them out. Use Field Artillery to soften up the opposition. Tired of that barn hiding the enemy approach? Blast it away!
VI. AREA SPECIFIC DAMAGE SYSTEM
Tanks in Tank Ace have 10 hit areas, each with a different defense rating. Focus on attacking areas with lower defense ratings, or conceal those areas for defensive stances.
Just as in real life, the front of the tank is the most highly armored area and the rear is vulnerable. If you really want to stick it to the enemy, send a shell right up their tail pipe!
VII. CAMP
In between battles, your avatar can catch some R&R in the Camp. Talk with other players, repair and improve your tank, and get some better gear. You can even recruit a tank crew to make your tank more effective in battle.
Gather up your friends and create your own Clan. Prepare your clan's strategies and launch into battle from your Military Base. The higher the level of the Military Base, the more members will be allowed to join.
There's more to the game then what I've been able to fit in here. Keep checking out these forums for more information!
The game maker/coder responded to my thread one time and then disappeared...here is what he said:
Well by all means cash is what keeps me in a job. However you will hardly need to pay to enjoy the game. The hope is, as with any game like this, that it will be enjoyable enough that people will want to support the company into hosting it further and getting more updates and changes out. The more support the game receives the quicker and more efficiently it can provide new and refreshing updates for them. Simple concept smile.
I have a strong feeling that this will be one of those games. While it isn't a powerhouse graphically the actual content is amazing. The attention to detail is something to be admired in an age when gaming has become pretty and stupid.
Your tanks will be customizable, as the original post mentions, various things you can add. The armor shows up for instance which is something I like.
I would strongly suggest that anyone who is interested join up on the forums and the closed beta. We'll be having tons of contests, I personally am going to be very active in the community and providing support and feedback (both to the players and the developers) as much as I possibly can.
http://tankace.gamescampus.com/landing/landing.asp
I hope to see all of you there. This will be a very fun experience I'm sure. Every last ounce of feedback will be appreciated to the highest degree.
There is a guide up now (mostly finished) that outlines much of the game to get folks prepared as we line up for the CBT. I'm supremely excited to see the strategies folks employ to take over the battlefields myself. But I've always been a sucker for war games, all the drama of war without any of the depressing aftermath (unless you count the two handed snack food gorge to help ease the pain of losing...but I've said too much).
PS. Any questions that come up myself and other folks will be trying to answer as soon as possible. Obviously it is a tad difficult at this exact moment since nothing is set in relative stone till the 17th (8 Days!)
- Rico
edit...the Tank Ace online game site is still active

World of Tanks have nothing in common with this game, except the word 'tank' in the title. Look at the renders and screenshorts, watch the teaser (http://www.worldoftanks.com/gallery/screenshots/1) and you'll see that the difference is too big (and not to the Aces favor)[]

PS Does this gameplay video release mean there's a closed beta coming soon?

Blitz 1941, it's a third person free arcade tank MMO.
It's the European version, resting on the same accounts&service as the European Navy Field.
It has only 2 sides, Germans and Russians, and is not exactly realistic but quite fun (if you can stand the grind of this Korean(-like) MMO).

The game looks rather polished and stable. The choice of tanks is incredible. It is a bit about grinding, but it's not a problem with me.
Two things I didn't like:
a) overpowered arty (that's why I chose this brunch ounlock )
b) when you enter Standard battles with Tier 3 vehicles - you normally get killed very quickly as there you face some serious guys driving KV, IS and Tiger tanks. Gues there should be some intermediate level between sandbox battles and regular ones.
Now I have these two babes in my garage (sold SturmPanzer II as I badly needed money):

and
[image]http://lh5.ggpht.com/_KhHXg4U3w7E/TEbHum_EjqI/AAAAAAAAAFs/hf0T9r3yTS8/gril.JPG[/image]
All in all the game is loads of fun.
Is anyone here playing it?

There're around six maps with different terrain types - urban districts and cross-country areas and a lot of tanks to research and upgrade. Right now it plays ok, but people will prob get bored with doing the same stuff on the same maps for weeks and months... They said there'd be Clan Wars with Global Maps in future - this maybe for fun to play.
