this looks like a lot of fun and the demo videos show some really good humor.

More like a FPS - grab a tank, drive and kill everyone if you're good enough. Just try it as long as it is free, though the client is rather big for - around 1 Gb.

Is it like IL-2 where any player can use any tank from any faction?  That one really took away the immersion factor in my opinion.

So, who is playing in the closed beta now? I finally got started yesterday and so far so good. I do like the spotting and radio feature that enables you to see only things that are spotted by you or spotted by a friendly within radio range and I much prefer the pacing to that of other online shooters (meaning it proceeds more slowly). I also very much like that in each battle, you have just the one 'life'. Once you get knocked out, it's time to sit back and watch. This has never become annoying for me and I like that it encourages caution and planning.

I got my invite and bonus tank at Historicon.  Like it a great deal, actually.         Curious to see what kinds of modes they have after launch.  Only random battles ATM with Soviet and German tanks battling side-by-side (there's a small mix of "lend-lease" Ami tanks as well).         Curious also to see what the pricing structure will be.             As things now stand, I'm in.         Best,         Jim     "Cyrano"     :/7)

Do they have an English page? I signed up and got an invite but all the links are Russian and flipping back and forth with Babelfish is a drag. I did get to the point where I can D/L the client at least. Are the Forums in English or Russian?

I read somewhere that they will have micro-transactions. I cannot attest to the accuracy of this. Apparently, if you want a GOOD tank, it will cost you. I sure hope that this isn't the case...I want my tank upgrades to be earned, not purchased. ....OH...and the 120mm smoothbore, please, with the laser range finder and gyro-stabilization! Hmmm...throw in some reactive armor, as well!

Hi Staggerwing, Here is the World of Tanks website in English: [link]http://www.worldoftanks.com/[/link] And their forum in English: [link]http://forum.worldoftanks.com/[/link] I think you *may* have signed up for the Russian beta, which was indeed only in Russian and preceded the current European beta. Everything I access is in English. Perhaps you can sign up again via the English language page but for the Euro beta.

I'm in the Beta.         So far the battle are 15 vs 15. The game is lots of fun but remember it is Beta. So there will be changes to the game some announced and some not. Game play is pretty smooth. The game has potential. Game play is pretty fast. You don't realize how much time has past when your playing. You really feal like the world is going slow when your waiting for your gun to reload and your stairing down the barrel of an 88. I seem to last about 5 minutes out of a 15 minute match. I find that the winning group usually sticks together instead of everyone going off alone. A well organized group can tear up another even if the other has late war tanks. Without trying to sound like a fanboy I am really enjoying the game. So if any of you want to form a clan(guild) and show all the roleplayers sign up for Beta and look for me as Schreck         I figure this is the closest most of us will come to driving a real tank without joining the army                 Look for me in game         Schreck

I started playing the beta last night and my views mirror Armchair Generals. The game is surprisingly stable, at least last night, for a beta. Right now all the battles are PUG's, which makes it a bit hit and miss as far as how fun the battle can be. Voice comms and coordinating attacks, or defense, will be much more fun I expect. Once they implement clan warfare and capturing territories it might be a really good game, the potential is there. The players in the online game I normally play (Eve-online) are in a bit of a rage at the moment and many people are trying this game, and people seem to be liking it so far. I got a beta key at the link just about instantly if you are curious. 1G download so not too bad. http://www.shatteredcry...index.php/world_of_tanks

In beta, you receive 150 gold coins each day that you log in and play at least one game. Gold coins are the micro-transaction currency of the future release, possibly. There are some tanks  that can only be bought with gold coins, but having looked at the stats, and actually bought the cheapest myself (an M3 Stuart) they don't stand out compared to the tanks that are acquired through accrual of sufficient research/experience and credits earned through battles. The biggest advantage perhaps is that they arrive in a fully upgraded state, whereas normally purchased tanks arrive with basic features which can be upgraded. Of course, the current situation doesn't necessarily tell us anything about the game post release. I've become very fond of Self-Propelled Guns (SPG) myself. Although I have sufficient research and credits to move up a tier (level) of tanks, I'm sticking with my primitive SU-18 SPG in order to get the crew (2 of) to maximum experience. Reportedly once crews reach 100% experience, they can acquire some bonus abilities that help out in battle, which I'd like to experience. By contrast, I'm pretty useless at killing anything with a tank destroyer (the Russian AT-1). When I fail to make a one-shot kill, I often either get outmaneuvered by a tank thanks to my lack of a turret, or I get hit by an opposing SPG. Using a light, fast tank is slowly growing on me. I'm not much good at hitting anything whilst going at speed though. The chance of me hitting something, not taking into account distance, is something like this: I'm moving and enemy is moving too: 1-5% I'm moving, enemy is stationary: 5-10% I'm stationary, enemy is moving: 10-25% I'm stationary, enemy is stationary: 50-90% One thing I've learned is that breaking radio contact by running off alone is almost certainly a bad move. Rarely, you may get lucky and ambush an SPG or grab a base if the opposing team have abandoned it, but more likely you'll get taken out before achieving anything. Teams that balance offence and defence and move up across the map at roughly the same pace usually do well.

Thanks for the link Montesano.  I'll check it out.  Been playing some beta FTP MMOs that aren't bad at all, lately.

Wow! After playing into a tier 2 tank, I can say that this game is a blast!  I was very much a skeptic at first, but now I'm a believer.  Once they release this baby, I'll make sure to purchase some stuff - they deserve it.

The foreboding is scary. I checked out a regular match in my little paper machine.  It looked like a bunch of Axis fanboys in Tigers and Tiger 2s.  Are you saying you're just fodder from Tier 3 through Tier 5?

Yes, you are pretty much fodder, at least on Tier 3. Tier 3 is extremely painfully and very frustrating. I'm only Tier 4 now but it is already getting better, my tank is upgraded and my crew is getting experienced, which seems to help quite a bit. The Tigers and Tiger 2s really aren't even your greatest worry, since with a little luck you can stay out of their way, being relatively quick and all. It's just that most of the opposing players can one shot you, Tigers and Tiger 2s can also of course, and where there are so many you are likely in someones cross hair. I just try and find out where a group is going and scout for them as best as I can, understanding that it is likely  a suicide mission. That role would be more effective if you could fight in teams, but thats not implemented yet. So it summary, it is horrible but it does get better. Just have to grind through that area. I think that is an area they need to fix somehow before release however, not sure "mainstream" will be as forgiving.

Been taking this for a spin, just made it to tier II, and I have a question you guys might be able to answer? When upgrading to a new tank, does it make any sense to take old tank crew and retrain them? Or should I just be using the new crew?

If they have skilled up at all it makes sense. They will lose 15%+, not sure exactly, when you train them on a new tank, so if they are not much over 25% it wont matter too much. But in general its a good idea, what I have been doing.

In case anyone is interested, it is possible to skip Tier 3 by completing a Tier 3 research tree using free experience. You need a heck of a lot of the free experience, so if you want to do this, don't use it for other research. To conduct research on a tank you do not own, you simply select it within the Tech Tree

Just played it for the first time. I am rather unimpressed. For some reason they are under the belief that teams should not be Axis vs Allies, as in the other WWII Eastern Front Tank MMO (Blitz 1941). Plus they seem to throw you into the water straight away. There is no tutorial, it's full PvP against experienced players with better tanks straight away. Ammunition costs money, and I am pretty sure repairs for anything but the base tank cost too. And yet you earn so very little, even when you actually manage to kill someone. Also, there's either some weird lagging issue (even though it doesn't register as so and I have good ping), because I've seen enemy tanks warp around. Plus it's very hard to know if you managed to damage an opponent, I can never figure out if I damage anyone or even hit them.

Damn, how am I supposed to get to the next tank? it costs 13,500 credits, and I earn around ~200-600 a battle. And this mind you will be my 2nd tank. Gameplay takes too long and leveling is too long for me. Where as I see some player one minute running around in a crappy light tank, and the next sporting a Jagdpanther or so. Plus, your chances of winning seem to be independent of your skills, they are purely based upon how your team plays. If your team camps and cowers, retreats and leaves you and others alone, it will lose for sure.

The dropdown menu under the "Battle!" button gives you options on what kind of restricted battle setups you do.  I think the bottom one is training, so that must be the tutorial.  I just hit F1 to get the controls down and that's all I needed.  It only took a little time to earn enough for a tier 2.  Once I got into a T2 tank, though, the money started flowing in - even after the paltry sum for repairs and ammo.  As for the T3 (and possibly T4) stuff, they need to do what Navy Field did, along the same lines as what they've done in the beginner's battle type, and make a new battle type that restricts it to T1 - T4 tanks.  Maybe allow a T5 or 2 per side.  I'm hoping someone has suggested this to them already as it seems pretty logical. I asked about the lag warping that happens at longer distances and when you first spot an enemy.  Some testers, who've been at it for awhile, told me it just started happening the last 3 or 4 days.  Either a patch f'd something up or the server load has been affecting it.  I see like 3200 people on it today.  I think this also causes some hits to not register - like when you shoot someone from 50m and .. nothing.   These lag issues are likely their biggest issue right now. I'm still having fun with T2 right now.  And if I get sick of being pounded on with a T3, I'll take the wise advice and just level through the T3 machine without buying it.   Of course, this all likely doesn't matter in the long run.. aren't they going to wipe your stuff before release?  And when is release supposed to be anyway?
