The mod for Panzer Campaigns Normandy is now available for downloading.   This is the first in the West Front series ( West Front 1.0 / Normandy 1.0) and features large and small textured 2D maps with fortification symbols integrated into the map and repainted vegetation and buildings.   Because The Wargamer resizes screenshots, if you want to see larger and clearer versions of these images you might want to visit this thread at the GameSquad forum:   http://forums.gamesquad.com/showthread.php?95101-The-Longest-Day-a-new-mod-for-Panzer-Campaigns-Normandy     Here are a few samples of what to expect:                                                                The Normandy mod is the first in the series (West Front 1.0 / Normandy 1.4) and can be downloaded from here:        http://tfe4.wordpress.com/graphics-and-sound-mods/panzer-campaigns-and-other-hps-titles/        This mod would not have been possible without Volcano Man's and Jison's spectacular work.   To install the mod, start with a clean install of HPS Normandy with the latest patch, then add the latest Volcano Man Normandy mod, then add the latest Jison Normandy Mapmod, then add my mod.   For the mod to work properly, the installation has to be done in exactly that order.   The latest HPS patches can be found here:   http://www.hpssims.com/   Volcano Man's mod site can be found here:   http://www.volcanomods.com/ (you'll need to register but it's no big deal)   Jison's mod site can be found here: http://www.hist-sdc.com/MapMod/index.htm      I'd  like to thank John Merriman for explaining the underlying logic of French roof colors to me.  North of the Occitan line (to the north they speak the French you learn in school, to the south they often speak a form of Langue d'Oc -- 'oc' is how you say yes in southern French) roofs tend to be grey, south of the Occitan line roofs tend to be red.  So if I ever mod a Panzer Campaigns game on Anvil/Dragon, expect a lot of shades of brown and dusky rose simulating clay roof tiles seen from above.  Belgium is another story: Bruges has red roofs, and any map that includes Paris, northern France, and Belgium (like France 1914 or France 1940) will be forced to make uncomfortable compromises.  Fortunately we're only dealing with Normandy here, and the dominant roof color is very grey.   While I was making the screenshots I noticed a few things that were supposed to be in version 1.0 but didn't quite make it, so expect the first update sometime next week.

The Normandy mod has been updated to 1.4.           The new link is now                 http://tfe4.wordpress.com/graphics-and-sound-mods/panzer-campaigns-and-other-hps-titles/                              Previous postings have been updated to reflect this.         The update includes a few things that somehow got left out of the initial release like the 3D unit files.         The Dutch flag is currently under review, and may get darker in the next update after this one (1.2).  Comments on this are welcome, especially if you're Dutch.  The current flag looks a bit too orange to me, which is fine in the 17th century but not so good in the 20th. The Polish swallow-tailed naval ensign will also get a little bit taller in 1.2.

Hows the AI in these games?

The AI is pretty good.  With all the realistic rules options turned on it can sometimes win.  As far as I know it doesn't cheat, and when you play it you don't feel like you're playing a dumb scripted program.           [If you mean by comparison to the HPS ACW and Napoleonics games, it's in a different league altogether, perhaps because it dealt with a more 'relevant' topic and may have gotten a few fringe benefits from military contracting work].         It also has a very active PBEM community out there when you feel like having your head handed to you (which is the only way you really learn these things).         And the support for the games is phenomenal.  Any rules system upgrades for one of them is applied to all the others, so ten year old games feel still feel fresh.

The latest version of the Normandy mod is now available for downloading.     It includes some unit art that had gotten left out of the initial release, corrects some errors that had crept in (SS HQ units now have the correct HQ symbol instead of the engineer symbol), and updates some of the older unit art (Canadian paratroopers have lost their halo).           Here are some new screenshots of the current state of the mod:     As usual, there are larger and clearer versions of these screenshots at GameSquad forum, which doesn't resize screenshots     http://forums.gamesquad.com/showthread.php?95101-The-Longest-Day-a-new-mod-for-Panzer-Campaigns-Normandy&p=1310353#post1310353                             [image]http://a.imageshack.us/img843/9320/newnor05.jpg[/image]           [image]http://a.imageshack.us/img203/8136/newnor01.jpg[/image]           [image]http://a.imageshack.us/img203/7700/newnor02.jpg[/image]           [image]http://a.imageshack.us/img203/3482/newnor03.jpg[/image]           [image]http://a.imageshack.us/img203/2051/newnor04.jpg[/image]                       The Normandy mod is the first in the series (West Front 1.0 / Normandy 1.4) and can be downloaded from here:                  http://tfe4.wordpress.com/graphics-and-sound-mods/panzer-campaigns-and-other-hps-titles/                       This mod would not have been possible without Volcano Man's and Jison's spectacular work.           To install the mod, start with a clean install of HPS Normandy with the latest patch, then add the latest Volcano Man Normandy mod, then add the latest Jison Normandy Mapmod, then add my mod.           For the mod to work properly, the installation has to be done in exactly that order.           The latest HPS patches can be found here:     http://www.hpssims.com/           Volcano Man's mod site can be found here:           http://www.volcanomods.com/     (you'll need to register but it's no big deal)           Jison's Mapmod site can be found here:     http://www.hist-sdc.com/MapMod/index.htm

The Normandy mod has been updated to version 1.4.  Previous posts have been adjusted to reflect this.         The update includes a repaint of the US and US Airborne, and a color adjustment on the background color of all Naval units.                 The latest version of this mod can be found at the Panzer Campaigns page of Task Force Echo Four:                       http://tfe4.wordpress.com/graphics-and-sound-mods/panzer-campaigns-and-other-hps-titles/

As mentioned, the AI is decent - and has continued to get updated over time. Generally speaking though the smaller scenario the more challenging your game play will be.

The latest version of the Normandy mod (1.6) is now available for downloading.             The new version features a darker repaint of the SS unit counters.  They are now as close to black as I can get them without being completely illegible.           The Normandy mod can be downloaded from Task Force Echo Four:           http://tfe4.wordpress.com/graphics-and-sound-mods/panzer-campaigns-and-other-hps-titles/           I'd like to extend a huge thank you to the BigRedOne for giving my mods a new home.

The latest version of the Normandy mod is now available at Task Force Echo Four.         This version features the new damage marker that I've used in all the other series.  The marker is a small, thick, dark red 'x' that is usuall found smack in the middle of the area affected.  It doesn't clutter up the map and is always visible.  I developed it by accident while breaching anti-tank ditches in Kursk.         The repaint of the German artillery has turned out to be a little more involved than I had hoped.  I'll be coming back to it very soon, and it will be part of the next update.  To get a sense of what it will look like, check out the German artillery in my Kursk mod.          This mod can be found at Task Force Echo Four, here:         http://tfe4.wordpress.com/graphics-and-sound-mods/panzer-campaigns-and-other-hps-titles/

There have been a few more small changes to the Normandy mod over the last few months, so there have been several updates to the file at Task Force Echo Four.   The current version of the Mod is now 1.12.             http://tfe4.wordpress.com/graphics-and-sound-mods/panzer-campaigns-and-other-hps-titles/             And be sure to download the unit movement sounds from the Scenario Design Center.          http://hist-sdc-downloads.blogspot.com/2010/12/panzer-campaigns-series-movement-sound.html

The Normandy mod has been updated to version 1.13.           The new version includes the new improved position symbol, a few vehicle corrections, and a major repaint of the German artillery.  I've left in a little grey in a few of the captured guns, but dunkelgelb and its camo variants are now the predominant color, as they should be.           The Normandy mod can be downloaded from Task Force Echo Four, here:           http://tfe4.wordpress.com/graphics-and-sound-mods/panzer-campaigns-and-other-hps-titles/                 And be sure to download and install Ed William's movement sounds that were designed to work with the new patch:           http://hist-sdc-downloads.blogspot.com/2010/12/panzer-campaigns-series-movement-sound.html

The Normandy mod has been updated to version 1.14.         The new version includes mod-specific changes to the secondary roads and trails that will increase their visibility, especially in the bocage.         The mod also uses the darker rivers and lighter streams that will be appearing in all my other Panzer Campaigns mods.         The mod can be downloaded from Task Force Echo Four, here:             http://tfe4.wordpress.com/graphics-and-sound-mods/panzer-campaigns-and-other-hps-titles/

You're looking at it the wrong way.         There's no shame in getting whooped by a human, especially if he knows more than you do.         Getting beaten by the AI is truly embarassing.

True. Go to theblitz.org and ask for a learning game. Plenty of friendly folks there willing to school a newb. Their website is a bit wonky, so expect a slight learning curve to figure your way around. At the top of the screen are 3 letter abbreviations for each game systems forum section. The PzC section is under "OPS."

Here's a link to the relevant section of the Blitz:             http://www.theblitz.org/message_boards/forumdisplay.php?fid=11             One of the things that makes that site important is that it is frequented by the designers and playtesters of the game series.   Since the manuals read like they were written by a computer programmer, a key part of learning to play these games is absorbing the oral tradition.  As far as I can tell you can only get that there.  So if you're interested in learning to play these games you should spend some time there as a lurker, even if you don't want to join.         And yes, the site is wonky, but the moderators (Rick and Foul) more than make up for it by being extremely helpful.

Just to add a little bit to what's already been said about the Blitz - navigation around the site isn't too hard once you get used to it.  also, it's not just Panzer Campaigns.  It not only covers all of HPS/J Tiller titles (Civil WAr, Ancients, Napoleonic, etc) but also  a lot of titles from other companies.  I know WitE has recently been added plus there's TOAW, Combat Mission.         Everyone I've ever run across there has been very helpful.

The latest version of the Normandy mod has some unit image updates.            The term Heavy Weapons covers a multitude of sins.  Some Heavy Weapons units in the game are labelled as machine gun units, behave like machine gun units, and tend to have machine gun-related imagery.  Some Heavy Weapons units, however, behave more like mortar units than machine gun units.  While it's true that they have higher assault values than typical mortar units because they're actually mixed units with a good helping of automatic weapons, they can only fire twice per turn rather than three times, and they use indirect fire.  And unlike straight mortar units (e.g. the French Commando mortar unit), you can put them in the front line and they can hold their own if attacked. Both kinds of Heavy Weapons units use the same Nato symbol, but I felt that there needed to be a little more in the image to remind you exactly what they were when you're moving them around.  So I squeezed a picture of a mortar into the background as an aide memoire.                        [IMG]http://img858.imageshack.us/img858/750/usinfantry.jpg[/IMG]                       The latest version of the Normandy mod (1.16) can be downloaded from Task Force Echo Four, here:                 http://tfe4.wordpress.com/graphics-and-sound-mods/panzer-campaigns-and-other-hps-titles/

The Normandy mod is still at version 1.16 but the thread needed to be re-titled in case anyone ever wants to find it.

All of my Panzer Campaigns-related mods can be downloaded from Task Force Echo Four:

 http://tfe4.wordpress.com/graphics-and-sound-mods/panzer-campaigns-and-other-hps-titles/

In case anyone has forgotten, install the latest HPS patch (which you can get from the HPS website), then install the latest version of the Volcano Man mod (which you can get from the Volcano Man Mods website), then install Jison's mod, then install mine.

Also, be sure to get the missing movement sounds from the SDC website if you haven't already:
