Master  of Orion 1 & 2 are $3.00           Master of Magic is $3.00           Both are complete, without DRM and are simply supurb games.           For the price of burger & fries - you can have gaming goodness to last a lifetime.           I still play Master of Orion - and I bought it when it first came out back in the day.           http://www.gog.com/en/promo/atari_classics

And both I-War games too. Note that you have to buy the multi-game Atari package to get these games for $3, otherwise the price is just over $4 - still a great deal!

If you get a JA game - get JA2.  It is much better on modern systems.           I replayed JA2 within the last couple of months.  Very fun game.

Anyone ever tried Fallout Tactics? I never picked it up back when it came out, is it any good?

I am very tempted to pick up MOO 1&2 and MOM but I just bought Realms of Arkania 1&2 and Betrayal at Krondor. I am also sorely tempted to get Fallout 2 and Tactics. Plenty of cheap solid gaming out there. As soon as AOW: Shadow Magic is released I am all over it. Good times!

Fallout Tactics is a good little game. It needed a bit more polish re: some of the dialogue and a few bugs here and there, but I liked it enough to play it thru to the end.

If I remember correctly it got panned when it came out....I played in a few years back after picking it up cheap somewhere and was quite surprised with how good it was.  Sort of a squad based tactical, turn based game in the Fallout universe using the same engine but without the deep role play and story of the original two games.  But fun none the less, quite challenging.

Considering MOO 1/2/3 as I've never played any of these space 4Xs. The problem isn't the money, but more like I already have enough new stuff (BG 1/2) and enough old stuff (too long a list) to play.  Either the games will side track me or they will just sit uninstalled & unplayed.  Still it is tempting.

Stay away from MOO3.  Far away.

SOM should be commenting on MOO3, IIRC.

Putting the world greatest 4x with MoO 3 is just wrong.     Almost playable yes, but no were near the greatest.     Believe me I wish it was, I loved the first two games but the third is just broken.     All you have to do is mothball your fleet one turn and then teleport it across the galaxy the next turn. At lease that the way it was the last time I played it. And tactical space combat and planetary combat were also weak. Diplomacy was greatly improve by the Mods. But overall the game is still very weak.

Opinions are like a$$holes...everybody has one. Which mods did you use?  My experiences have been entirely different from what you've described above. Planetary combat in modded MOO3 is more complex and more detailed than in ANY other space 4x game.  I implore you to prove otherwise.

Should never have to use a modded game to make it the greatest.     I think it was strawberry or something like that. Can you still teleport you fleet across the galaxy?     If not please tell me the what the mod is.

I'm really not sure what you're talking about.  I never was able to "teleport my fleet across the galaxy"...I use the Vanilla and the tropical patches.

Your ships are all put in to a pool, when you form a fleet they show up were ever the fleet is made. another words, if I build a ship on one side of the galaxy, the next turn you could put the ship in a fleet on the other side of the galaxy. Teleportation, the ship moved across the galaxy.

I know; so you (and Anguille) have been saying, anyway.  Gods knows I want to believe you guys, but I've still been reluctant to give it a try for some reason.  I think I'm worried that even with mods, it will still feel too much like I'm playing a spreadsheet.  What's your take on that?

Can you please edit that quote up there...those are NOT my words...they are Ostfronts.

Well, if I get MOO, then I will buy all three. This site seems to pretty well have MOO3 fixes in hand: [link]http://bhruic.dyndns.org/patcher/index.php[/link] --- Jarhead and or others, Do you know if the GOG version of MOO3 is third party patchable?  As they sometimes recompile the EXEs and some mods alter the EXEs, there can be problems. Thanks.

That is a good question that I do not had the answer to. I run the game from the original CD-ROM.  I can tell you though that bhruic is he man...he is the one who has turned the game around and brought it back from the dead. You're better off with this site though I think...it has the combined super mods/patches... [link]http://www.moo3.at/mods/[/link]

Re:  MOO3 Looking at: http://www.moo3.at/mods...=displaycat&catid=14 It clearly indicated "Version 1.2.5 Modifications". GOG states on their product page for MOO3, "Patched to version 1.2.5". So, in the absence of anyone with any actual experience trying to patch the GOG version, I would guess that it can be done.  Now, I just need to decide if I will buy them.

For MOO3 it is a must to install one of the three bhruic mods. There are Vanilla, Tropical and Strawberry. I can't remember which one I used but it was unplayable (for me) without it. I'll dig around and see if I still have them somewhere.

Gah; sorry about that Jarhead.  (And actually, those were my own words, not Ostfront's.)  In any case, to return to my original question:  Does MOO3 still feel like playing a spreadsheet to you?  Or do the mods alleviate that issue?
