TpekCommander![]() ![]() Posts : 2923 Joined: 29 NOV 2009 Status : Offline | I couldn't find the old thread about MMORPGs that people here were playing, so I decided to start a brand new one.
In short, what MMOs are people playing here?
I've got a lifetime account on Star Trek Online, I sometimes pop into to play. An inactive Champions Online account with some quite advanced toon, I have a crappy low level character in D& Online and sometimes I try to recreate my character on LOTRO Online, I used to play Blitz 1941, Navy Field and recently World of Tanks.
Blitz 1941 is just too grindy for me, and I quite dislike Navy Field. D& Online isn't that interesting, and both it and LOTRO are Free-2-P(l)ay , except they will only allow North Americans (which according to them includes the U.S, Canada, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand) to pay and get the 'good stuff'. For Champions I waited for them to reinstate the lifetime subscriptions as I didn't want to continually pay for it, but not only they didn't now, but I have other F2P MMOs out there and am looking forward to DC Universe Online. Star Trek Online is kinda meh in certain way, ground missions are always very easy whereas space battles are either easy and long, or short and impossible (such as when a horde of superior ships attacks you at once).
EDIT: Ohh, I also played some Global Agenda, and found it a very retarded game.

It's nice & different from the others with a post-apocalyptic setting and it's shooter/rpg gameplay.
I still jump in on my STO lifetime sub but the crappy ground combat ends up getting me down after doing it too much. Space combat keeps me coming back, though.
EDIT: I may jump back into Darkwind sometime in the future for a car wars fix.

Also, most of the times you end up fighting the same old enemies, the Klingons. Only rarely, and at the beginning do you fight a bit of Gorn, Orion Syndicate people, and maybe one more race. And of course the Borg at the tutorial.
Strangely, I never seem to fight any mercenaries, non-Nausican pirates, rogue Federation-people, Romulans, Cardassians, Jem'Hadar, or anything else.
How is Fallen Earth btw? Is it any good? how hard is the game? how is PvE? how is PvP handled? are there severe death penalties?

BlakjackCenturion![]() Posts : 771 Joined: 5 JUL 2009 Location: US, OH Status : Offline | I've played or at least tried several MMO's since getting into them a few years back.
Dark Age of Camelot - leveled about 7 or 8 toons to level cap. Played some RvR (realm vs. realm or Player-vs.-Player combat) but not much. Like many players, the Trials of Atlantis expansion really deflated the game & made it not as much fun.
Planetside - got into the beta & played after launch with Sturmgrenadier. Since there was no PvE part of the game at all, as the player population dropped so did I. I think I liked getting into the Max armor & lobbing grenades around during a tower defense most of all. That was just fun.
EVE - tried to get into EVE two different times. The game is (still) gorgeous & the depth is amazing, but is not friendly to casual or even newbie gamers at all. I only have just one toon there but only ever flew the frigate ship.
City of Heroes - was once (maybe still is) my fav MMO. The grind of mid-30's to level cap got really old however & finding people to do the harder (and thus higher reward) missions became too cumbersome.
Dungeon's & Dragons Online - is not really D& or Baldur's Gate or anything similar. The lack of single-player content ended this for me.
Warhammer Online - not bad considering... the "area quests" is a nice idea and I did like the low-level player-vs.-player zones. Its no DAoC sequel however.
World of Warcraft - started playing at launch & stayed for about a year then went away for almost two before returning & still playing. I mainly stay because its my wife's favorite game & I help her with quests, knowledge of where to go / what to do that sort of thing. It can still be fun at times and I go out of my way to try and do quests I've never done before. Plus like Steel said... Cataclysm is coming out soon & it looks intriguing.
Champion's Online - I was very excited for CO & got into the open beta not long before launch. Bought a lifetime subscription so I check in from time to time. Its not City of Heroes though, and the highest toon I've got is 9th level. Can't seem to break out of the second area & all my toons are either in Canada or the desert. Frustrating. Although I like how you can fly (or get your "travel power") sooner than in COH, I much prefer the flight model of COH to CO.
Star Trek Online - Got in at launch & like CO was very excited for this one. I opted to not get the lifetime subscription as I didn't want to pay up front for it & then get disappointed as with CO. I'm glad I didn't because it quickly got cumbersome. The control of your character on ground combat is simply maddening. Even just moving from place to place is a lesson in frustration as the toon swings back & forth like a saloon-door from lag or whatever causes it. Its a known issue on the forum's since beta & last time I checked (on a free weekend) they still hadn't fixed it. The space combat is cool, but can also get frustrating when trying to solo. Even when warping into an instance, and I'm alone (as I almost always play solo) when 3 or more ships jumps on me and all I'm flying is the Constitution-class cruiser I got for pre-order, well lets just say I got tired of getting my butt handed to me. I don't mind a challenge, but I do take issue with ridiculous.

I would never play a game I had to pay a subscription for....just for the fact out of the hundreds of games I've played only a few ever last more than 3 to 6 months of play...

There are no classes - character levelling is done with "action points" you gain as you go and spend on whichever skills and abilities you want. It's very crafting oriented as nearly everything that drops or is harvested can be used in recipes that make something. Being able to use rifles or pistols like a first-person shooter is a lot of fun and a nice change from the usual MMO fare. The initial intro was surprisingly nice. You start with a mount near the start of the game (which you'll want to replace with better soon). There's buttloads of quests. The PvP in the starter sector is limited to small zones with lots of lootables inside them, dunno about later... it seems to be fairly active though. I see other players all over the place as there's only one server "shard". The Help channel is always well populated with Q&A noob questions and is very helpful. There may be someone else here who's played it longer than I. I've heard there's a lot of rep grind in late game to unlock more "gamma" power skills and other goodies. That seemed to be the biggest drawback that I heard from a guildie of a different MMO. It's not very old and I regularly hear of new stuff in the pipeline. Edit: There's a 10-day Free Trial so give it a shot when you get bored of other stuff. That's what I did. |

If I had nothing but time to invest in a MMO, it would be EQ2. I is the biggest and most elaborate of the fantasy based games. For those who like me are interested in DCUO check out:
[link]http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/betakey/[/link]
Apparently they are now allowing pre-orderers beta access.
Bad news is that their promised date of Nov 2010 is not only off, but the Beta won't even begin 'till December.
As for Champions Online, frankly it's FAR better than City of Heroes/"Villains". One can certainly see how Cryptic learned their trade and got the lessons from CoH/"V".

[:@] I may resub for a month or two sometime just for some crazy flying action and the open advancement is always a plus. It's not something I sub to for very long at a spell though.
I doubt I'll try anything new until the Star Wars one comes out, which is what.. about another year/year and a half? I never liked much DC stuff, I always thought it was very cheesy. I have plenty that I can jump back & forth between in the meantime, not to mention WoT's release (along with the new FTPs) and all my single-player backlog.

cicernoCenturion![]() ![]() Posts : 792 Joined: 22 JUN 2010 Status : Offline | I just tried EVE and I did not like it at all. There is a rookie channel with literally 3000 people on it all talking at once in 4 point font that blows past faster than you can read it. It is worse than totally useless. I was doing the rookie missions to learn the game and ended up in .4 space where a player fleet literally went out of its way to chase me down and destroy my frigate. People must be bored out of their minds if they jump at the chance to gank a level 1 rookie ship with their fleet. I imagine this is a game for gankers and they end up eating themselves as the gankees leave and do something more fun.
I wanted to like it, and it seems like it had potential, but poor implementation. Seriously, what is up with the miniscule font?

This is showcasing Character Creation...
Seems rather bad to be honest. Looks like it is based off the CoH/CoV system of choosing a class, a powerset, and such.
You can't seem to choose a size other than Small, Normal and Big. All heroes shown are variations of DC stock characters. And in fact you have to choose such a character to base your char on. And have to choose whether to be melee, ranged, duel-wielding, etc... plus power origin and type of power (like elemental control).
Plus the plot is quite lame as well. So my character isn't a real superhero but instead Lex Luthor from the Future stole some other Hero/Villain's power and bestowed it upon a random hapless me???
So I can be Batman because of Future-Lex granting me Batman-Powers, rather than have any actual character history, personality or any such???

I believe the game generates a pop-up warning before you accept a mission that sends you into 0.4 or lower security areas, partly for this reason. So it may not neccessarily have been "gankers" so much as the border protection patrols that made sure to hunt down the intruder (you). Not that gankers are missing in EVE by any means... But staying in Empire space (0.5+) is generally extremely safe from PvP in my experience (barring declarations of war, obvioulsy). cicernoCenturion![]() ![]() Posts : 792 Joined: 22 JUN 2010 Status : Offline | If I could find a larger font I would probably give it another chance. It seems like such a silly thing but I can literally not read the font size. I keep picking the wrong action from the menus. I have several times removed all enemies from the overview because that option is located about a millimeter beneath the lock target action. Then I am frantically trying to figure out how to get them back on while being hammered by invisible enemies. I ended up one star system over and dead because I picked the wrong option under an indecipherable menu. I was next to a starbase when I was killed but couldn't get into it because I couldn't find the command to dock.
Maybe I'm just too old to play the game or need to get some magnifying glasses to wear. I asked about the font on the rookie channel but there were 3000 people (no exageration)on the channel, the font size was 2, and the messages sped by so fast I couldn't get an answer, which was just as well since most of the conversations were either spam or people making fun of rookies they just blew up.

KnaveryCenturion![]() Posts : 930 Joined: 10 JAN 2005 Location: US Status : Offline | I was playing WoW for about five years. I left about a couple years ago now. I just recently started playing LoTR Online. I'm enjoying it a lot, but am having a hard time understanding what some of the funtions are like deeds, hobbies, etc. I also don't for the life of me understand how you get a paid subscription. I've looked and looked and looked and can't find where you sign up. I don't really know the benefits vs. playing the free account, but I'd like the ability to weigh my options.
What do I think so far? As far as the free account goes, I don't see this going very far. There's an LoTR Store button right on the interface where you can spend Turbine points. However they take so long to rack up, it doesn't really provide many benefits. However, you can buy (with real money) Turbine points to use on various things like mounts. I don't like this approach very much as it nickle and dimes people to death.
I like the old WoW approach where things are earned in the game. And I don't want to start 80 different toons just to rack up enough points to buy a mount with my main. The entire reason I left WoW was because I couldn't compete with the younger crowd that played 18 hours a day. If this ends up being the same way, I'll leave before hitting level 20. DAK_15 PZCenturion![]() Posts : 25 Joined: 13 APR 2008 Status : Online | I am still playing DDO. IMO the best of the MMORPG's only because it focuses on teams overcoming difficult quests. I can see why people who enjoy solo play dislike DDO, I have been with the same DDO guild for over three years. I do find that now that all of my characters are capped, it has become a grind. There is an epic level for some quests, but it is really tough. I have been giving LOTRO a try. seems OK, but the combat in DDO is far superior.

StormwaltzCenturion![]() Posts : 103 Joined: 4 FEB 2006 Status : Offline | I have a lifetime subscription to Lord of the Rings Online that was grandfathered in when they changed to a free-to-play model. I still spend a lot of time there. Regardless of my quibbles about some systems, they got the Tolkien feel right, and it's a world I enjoy living in. I've probably taken over 2000 screenshots in the last few years.
I have monthly subs to Star Trek Online and Age of Conan. STO has good naval combat (a simplified version of Taldren's Starfleet Command games from the 90s) and ground combat as dull and uninspired as what you see on the later TV series; two forces take half-hearted cover on opposite sides of the room and intermittently fire phasers at each other until someone falls over or blows into sparkles. I played an assassin in AoC and had fun sneaking about and knifing mobs. It didn't seem to hook me, though, as I haven't played in months.
I no longer play City of Heroes, though I did for 2-3 years. I had no interest in it (I'm not a fan of the superhero genre) until I played it. In 2004, it was a revelation - combat was fun, fast, and colorful. You routinely overpowered swarms of faceless minions. CoH is still the benchmark for making travel fun. While watching the land- or star-scape crawl by in other MMGs, I think of superjumping from rooftop to rooftop in CoH, and sigh wistfully.
I played EVE Online for over a year, until I realized that I was doing hours of virtual chores to be able to afford minutes of actual fun. EVE is more fun to read about than to play; the preposterous heists and villanous scams, the rise and fall of empires - fantastic, soul-stirring stuff! The reality, as I experienced it, was largely reading books while waiting for my ship to get somewhere or finish something. The old saw about "long stretches of boredom punctuated by moments of sheer terror" is fully accurate.
Way back in the paleolithic days of MMGs, I was a content designer on Asheron's Call 1. I'll refrain from commenting on that, since it was both my first MMG and my first industry job. It's special to me, and many of its features are still utterly unique in the MMG space. Though the game is still running, for me - sadly - its time has past.

TpekCommander![]() ![]() Posts : 2923 Joined: 29 NOV 2009 Status : Offline | I opened a ticket at Turbine about how to purchase Turbine Points for LOTRO when I live in Israel.
All I got in return was a standard response telling me to CALL THEM (aha, right... I am going to make a many-$ phone call in order to to make a 15$ purchase....).
Seriously, they take professionalism to a new level of depth.
They might as well have sent me that generic condolences message from Catch 22, at least that would have had a humorous side to it.
However, I do believe I've found a trick to get them to accept an Israeli credit card. Now if I would actually want to purchase Turbine Points, I might be able to do it. []
