How would you do it?           Few things to keep in mind:           1. Any armed recue group could possibly be seen as eather mercenries or govt troops by rebels.           2. Safe air space not guaranteed.           3. No transport of their own.           4. They are running low on supplies. They would need help and protection quick.           5. Remember they are in the desert, not close to big cities/airports.                     See link for more details on story           http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-12550802           See link for google map of incidents           http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=215454646984933465708.00049c59184ae1136341a

Safe airspace not achievable in the absence of any carriers or maritime aviation. Only ship on task has short range AAW systems and no sizeable RM capacity. Thanks Dave - some great calls on defence there. Memories of the S. Atlantic anyone? (We don't need carriers - oh wait - perhaps we do) We could ask nicely.

I did actually hear the interview with the oil worker today on the radio.  Joking apart I feel sorry for him. An Oil camp for 100 men now with 300. Only enough food and water for one day. Jeez.           They are 2 hours south of Benghazi, in the desert. Looking at Google maps of Libya you are just not going to walk out of there, apart from the marauding locals the terrain looks like the planet Mars.           SAS 4x4 vehicle convoy overland  from Eypgt to Benghazi and back
esert Rats style?           The oil worker says they should send a Hercules.  So there must be landing strip close.  Risk sending an Aircraft from Cyprus to pick them up? Libyan air force must be in chaos at the moment.

]     If the SAS are interested. I've got the land route on google now.  Start at Egyptian border then cut across the Cyrenaican desert to the town of Ajdabiyah then up the coast road to Benghazi. 8 hours 57 minutes, 689 km.           Could be a bit tricky if we run into any opposition as the Libyans are well trained.     http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/onthefrontline/6176808/SAS-trains-Libyan-troops.html [sm=00000018.gif]

It doesn't take much of an airfield for a Hercules to land. Of course, the trouble with that is what kind of resistance are you going to encounter. Doesn't sound like there is even anybody in the government right now who could guarantee safe passage.

Perhaps selling the Ark Royal to that Turkish scrappy was just a clever ploy to get it nearer the zone without anybody suspecting? Do you think we could borrow it for a bit?

I think we have the required kit to get them out of there, Hercules, Typhoons, Lynx, SAS, etc but I just can't see how we get them there. Then if we do does Gadaffi use it as proof of Western powers as the root cause of all his woes? Personally I don't give a rats arse about Gadaffi but my government might.

That's one of the remarkable things about life. It's never so bad that it can't get worse. Then again quietly confident but what of? The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you've got it made.

Why, it would be a full circle moment for the SAS... dashing around in Land Rovers with the LRDG, dodging the Gerries... er, I mean the Libbies.

facebook is really showing how little people pay attention to wtf is going on in the world and how things are interconnected.  Im seeing lots of posts where people are wondering why gas prices are climbing and why the US government isnt doing something with alternate energy.     morons!

I wonder (truthfully knowing that the answer is "no") if the Libyan opposition were to set-up a "government" in Benghazi, and they used the media to appeal for international aid to help them overthrow a tyrant and defend their democratic movement... would Obama have the balls to send in the Marines?  Would the French send in the Legion?  Would the Italians land troops?

People always seem to think big, everybody wants to send a big ship or a Hercules, because that would normally be practical. If nobody's running the country, landing on the primary airports or using major ports will be tricky. If you fly a total of 60 flights with small prop planes that can more or less land on a dime (should be plenty of those around) transporting 5 people each time, you've still evacuated 300 people. Nowadays, everything's about an instant solution instead of using resources that are actually in the area.

I still can't believe we didn't have a carrier battle group in the area.  I remember about 7 years ago I was at a conference where the Navy said they were looking to end scheduled deployments and go to a 'surge' concept so a potential enemy never knew ahead of time if a CVBG was in the area.  I thought then that its better to know there's always a 'cop' on the beat.  I would have thought after first Tunisia, then Egypt, Bahrain, and Jordan we'd have had assets in the Med by now.  This is baffling!
