The closest thing I have found to them is the Kings Hawaiian Sweet Rolls as far as the bun or roll itself. Of course Kings Hawaiian is not nearly as buttery,warm, and soft.
Trust me these are 10 times better then any Chinese bun I have ever tried.

Most Chinese buns I have had are spongy and the bread itself is lacking in flavor. Plus they are steamed which means you usually dont get the nice browned outer crust. Now I am sure their are some good buns out there, but I havent found one yet that holds a candle to a kolache.

I use to have a neighbor that made them for the County Fair. She would paid us to help her make them. Of course we we may have accidently sample a few. Our job was to put the filling in the middle.

Really, not so much. I think my wife got Czech-ed out back at the home front. Too many Sunday mornings listening to Joe's Polka Show, etc.... I'll have to ask her if she's recovered from all that yet.
