I am giving up on waiting patiently for a decent tactical naval wargame to come out for the PC.  I know there is WC-NAW but it is currently limited in certain ways (no land, no air, no PBEM), though it is a good game and holds promise if continued development proceeds.  But other than WC-NAW...there is little else.   What I am wondering from you board wargamers is if there is a good/great OTB tactical naval game available you could suggest...that has a Vassal module?  Really looking for Dreadnaught to 1950 time period.

gabeeg, You may want to look into the Vassal version of Victory Games' Carrier. GJK created an excellent Vassal module for the game, which includes all of the necessary charts. The rules are also available online now at boardgamegeek. Therefore, you should be able to play the game via Vassal without a hard copy. I don't know how well that fits what you are looking for- it is very much aircraft carrier warfare centric- but...well...that's it.

Hi! You might want to look into Bismarck or Tokyo Express. There is also Flat Top but that is aimed at carrier warfare vice gunnery action. Pablo

I know that Avalanche Press has its "Great War At Sea" series that looks like they'd fit the bill but unfortunately AP has a strict policy against electronic formats of their games (noted exceptions).  I created a ZunTzu gamebox for their "John Prados' Third Reich" and nobody screamed at me about that one.  I don't know of anything has been created for any of the GWAS series of games or even how they play to be honest with you; this is what came to mind however reading your request.

I've thought about creating a vassal mod for Cruiser Warfare which is one of the GWAS games. I started to scan in artwork about 3 years ago but realized what a PITA it is, especially knitting together the map sections since my scanner is only letter size. The vassal creation process seems a bit confusing as well. The game has a strategic area-based map and a hexagon based tactical map. The ships each have a damage sheet as well. The project got shelved a while back when other things got in the way. I'd welcome any help or suggestions in case I get started again, especially in reference to the map. Are there any cheap or free utilities out there that I can use to easily knit together partial images? I couldn't get all the pixels to line up smoothly at the seams.

I created a map making tutorial that shows how *I* do it in Photoshop. Probably not the best way, but it works for me and this could probably apply to inkscape (free) or Gimp or something else: www.garykrockover.com/vassal/mapmaking.html There was a (free?) piece of software that would "stitch" map scans together but I forget the name of it and honestly, I never used it but I remember looking into it at one point. I may still hqve the link for it- I'll check when I get home.

Also, there's a VASSAL module designer that goes by the name "-E" that has made some great modules.  On of these, Raid On St. Nazaire, has the log sheets where you check off boxes and he has that implemented into his module some how.  The best way to learn is to open that module up in the editor and poke around to see how it did things. We use some of Avalanche Press's naval games (Jutland; Bismarck) for strategic map movement, searching, and campaigning, but then switch to Seekrieg V miniature rules for the tactical battles that result.  If the engagements are large (over 5-8 ships per side) we will sometimes decide to use GQ3 or the AP tactical rules depending on time available.  (I have thought of getting NWS's computer miniature rules and using them to resolve the large fleet engagements, but there is still a lot of data input to be done - so we haven't tried yet) Not technically a boardgame, and not sure about a VASSAL module.  We use email with one of us being the GOD (Game Operations Director) and then play out the tactical battles when we meet up.

Well now there is Steam and Iron for PC, but I agree, a VASSAL module of some good rules set would be fine.

I'm thinking about making a simplified Admiralty Trilogy game.  I'm not sure how that would go over as a VASSAL game

copy-rightwise, but if it were say purely introductory and solitaire-oriented and required getting the rules and

specs from Clash of Arms, maybe it would be seen as helpful to Clash of Arms.

Staggerwing, you can get a large original scanned to pdf at almost all FedexOffices (Kinko's Kopies).

Their blueprint machine is networked and does scans.

Last time I checked it was something like $9.95.

Only takes an hour or so.  Probably much better than stitching all the letter scans together.
