I was having problems staying logged in until I figured out that some of the 'Forums' links don't keep you logged in during the transition.

OK, I don't post much but I visit the site frequently.  I loved the most recent post section on the old front page.  I also think the new front page's articles/news links have too much graphics and not enough substance (only half a sentence on each topic; I used to be able to tell if I wanted to click the link because it had enough detail to tell me what the subject was about).

I could also use a date by the news articles to tell me how old they are.

I disagree with the previous poster. I really like the new site front page. Gives a bit more of a feel of visual importance to the reviews and stories, while still keeping things like press releases up there for information.

I'm still getting logged out every time I turn off the computer.  I have already deleted cookies and re-started yet I am forced to log in every time I visit this site.  Can someone tell me what I might be doing wrongly?

I am using FireFox 4.0.1 as the browser.

The jury is still out for me and the new forum. I am moving towards the fact it is just new and a few things need fixing.

1) Too many logins is a major one and I believe the most urgent as its puts you off visiting. I often visit here as a last minute thing before doing something else.

2) I am somewhat disoriented as I had it down pat with checking the unread threads and also I miss the pop up that would give the first line or two of the post. I find a lot of folks tend to use generic titles such as 'WWII wargame' or the like, akin to the 'Help!' posting of technical forums. The pop up was really useful both as a radar spam guard but also I found its real use was a mental reminder of what the hell the thread was about.

On the positive side the farcical apologies of posters having seen there carefully crafted presentation shredded into a continuous stream of a ranting madman. In fact the only thing missing was the conversion OF THE ENTIRE POST INTO CAPS which would have confirmed that for some reason the inmates of Bedlam had found the wargamer.

Also I enjoy using the spell check, having become addicted to its use in life in general, the frustration of having the misspelled word conveniently underlined in red only for the inability to correct it without a mind numbing trial and error process of someone searching for the right key in a bunch similar looking keys.

So basically, I am glad the new forums are up.

EDIT: I don't effing believe it - would not let me post and then logged me out and then chewed my post.

Logging in with facebook was fine.

Logging in with my username/password, didn't seem to want to log in. After a number of tries it left me as a Guest login account.

Logging in with my email/password worked after username login had failed.

Chrome, under WinXP Pro SP3.

Not feelin the new forums atm...

Takes many (2-3) times for my user/pass to accept. I have to log on everytime I come here? ( no option to save info?)

Very minimal settings I can adjust in my prefrences? (no color changes? posts pr page? etc?).

You only have the colour of the folder icon at the front of the topic as a visual indicator, if its orange then there has been new posts to the topic since your last visit.

You can always click on the Active Topics link at the top right hand side, to check a list of all new posts since your last visit.

I'd still prefer the topic subject to be BOLD as a better visual indicator, than simply just a small icon colour.

Prefer the previous layout...liked seeing the current posts on the forum. Have much less interest in the advertising...

Sort of a secondary issue, but it would be nice to either eliminate or reduce the amount of space taken up by sticky posts/threads so you don't have to scroll down the page with your mousewheel 3 or 4 times to view the most recent content. You wind up scrolling 3/4 of the way down the page before you can begin reading.....

How did you guys get your avatar to stick? I tried a few times yesterday and it just wouldn't take.

My Avatar seemed to just carry over from the old layout. *shrug*

+ many.  There are only 11 actual posts on the front page of the games forum.  It was about twice that many previously.  I can guarantee you that a drastically decreased number of posts on the front page of a forum will stifle conversation.

I just logged on, and hopefully I will find some benefits to this new forum eventually.  But for now I'm puzzled and hoping my log-in continues to work OK and I don't get logged off.

This probably isn't the place for this, but since this is my first attempt to get into the new forum, I'll start here.

Log In is easier, and that part I don't mind, but I wonder if it isn't less secure.

What bothers me, though, and it will have a direct impact on how much time I spend here (or don't spend here), is the absense of that compendium of recent posts that used to have a prominent place on the front page.

I've complained in the past about too many people using it as a political soap box, but getting rid of it entirely is a bit like throwing the baby out with the bath water.

The main reason I've been coming back to this site over the last few years is that it scanning that section lets me get a fairly good sense of what's out there in the hobby, and not from the mouths of heavily doctored advertising campaigns.

I remember very fondly discovering Combat Mission that way about ten years ago.  I was at work, glanced at this site, noticed a couple of threads popping up on the front page, read them, and checked them out.

Yes, of course the quality of the comments is going to be very uneven, but it's not the manicured marketing pablum that companies expect you to swallow.

I don't really have time to check out each individual section of the forums in the hopes of learning something new.  And I suspect that I share that with the majority of visitors.  What I really liked about the old format is that every now and again things would be discussed that I hadn't even thought of looking for.  I may still get a bit of that experience under this format, but only because, when I have time, I'll make a point at scoping out what's going on in a lot of the different threads.  New casual users won't do that.

My biggest gripe about the new format, with the elimination of that section, is that it makes the Wargamer look like everybody else.  That may be a good thing as far as explaining yourself to senior management, but it makes the site a lot less interesting to visit.

I hope I'm pleasantly surprised some morning to find that a few of the uselessly colorful images have been eliminated and replaced with a dozen cryptic recent posts.  I'd even go so far as to say that I'd rather have a recent posts section that was half full of right- and left-wing political nonsense, than no recent posts at all.

And now I'm going to hold my breath and see if my avatar got carried over...

Just found the Active topics button.

Not as good as having it in your face on the front page because first-time casual users (like me) won't know about it, but I can probably live with it if I must.

Ebenso, most of my earlier comments still hold.

There's no list on the homepage but the forum home has an 'active topic' list button in the top right whose timeframeyou can customize.

bummer, that was one of my favorite things.  I browse at work a couple times a day and it was a fast way to see what was up.
