I have a Cyberpower machine-or I did since I pretty much rebuilt it from the ground up last year.  The original build gave me no issues.

This thread comes at a very opportune time. My five year old machine is about to die. It's crashing a lot, it won't let me mod, and it's generally cranky all the time for the last two weeks. I've upgraded it several times and it owes me nothing, so...I have a choice of getting a Dell, going to the local Mom/Pop shop or going to CyberPowerPC.

What do you all say? I am tempted to go the local route because I think I would save a lot of money but that price you quoted above is awesome. 1156?? I'll get two!

Congratulations, Blakjack. I hope you are as pleased with your new PC as I was with the one I bought about this time last year.

Have fun!

^Where'd you buy from? I just priced one out at Alienware (granted with all the bells and whistles) and it was 3000.

^Looks like he got it from Newegg.

I got my PC about three years ago from Falcon Northwest (a Fragbox). I've been happy with it. It's definitely more expensive than a DIY, or even some other custom shops, but I was quite happy with the customer service.

I brought a $2800 AW Laptop back in 2002, it still works. I custom built a PC in 2006 and it still runs most everything at high graphics.

I have an i7 core machine I bought almost 3 years ago from Digital Storm (www.digitalstormonline.com) and have been extremely happy with it.  Plus they give you life-time technical support.

I bought mine from Newegg on 4 October 2010. The Predator cost $1849.99 plus another $159.99 for the monitor and $24.99 for shipping and handling (I just checked). But the PC is no longer available from Newegg for some reason.

^Hmm so about 2000, good price. I'm getting a new monitor too...big scratch on the one I use now.

I am just wondering if my local shop will be able to beat these prices. It used to be a no brainer that a local shop could but now I'm just not sure.

Congrats on the new rig Blakjack and happy gaming!

Gus, sorry to hear that your rig is ready for the landfill but every cloud has a silver lining eh? Consider running your OS off a SSD in your new build...you will see a nice increase in boot speed.

Blackjack,

I've been looking at cyberpower and ibuypower PCs for a while too. I should be buying one within 6 months. Let me know what you think.

Also been looking at http://www.digitalstormonline.com/ but it seems they are much more expensive than cyberpower and ibuypower.com

^Nah not getting rid of the current machine, it will become the kids computer. So it will live on. It's just moody and after five years needs to be relegated to less heavy duty

So after pricing two machines at Alienware I would be paying between 2500 and 2800. Which is exactly what I've paid for the last three machines I've had over the last 15 years. I'd like to get that price way down, to close to what BlakJak posted above.

In fact, I may get exactly what BlakJak posted! It is perfect and would likely last me another five years (with upgrades) but the bang for the buck can't be beat on his system.

I just want to hear from a few more people that CyberPowerPC is reliable/reputable. From there it's just a matter of choosing a monitor

The real benefit from a SSD will be with the new Z68 boards with Smart Response Technology. It combines the SSD and your HHD into one volume and you can put your swap files in the SSD for real speed increase.

Looking at Blackjacks specs just reminded how outdated my machine is.

Gus,

Having owned several Dells in my life I would never buy another one again.  Their quality has declined over the years, sure the machines they sell may look purdy, but they are all POS.  Their service and support is also substandard.

3 years ago I bought an HP Pavillion desktop from Best Buy and have been very happy with it.  My next computer, however is going to be a Mac.  My recent run in with viruses have led me to believe that I can do all I do now on a Mac but without the virus nonsense.

Good luck in whatever decision you go with.

^I've had Dells for the last ~10 years and they have been great machines! How dare you Sir, how dare you!

I also have a very decrepit Mac that I will be replacing but The Game Machine gets first dibs. It's my baby.

You like the HP machines eh? I have seen a couple of good deals over at NewEgg for them.

I hope you have better luck than I did with Cyberpower.   I have bought Three computers from them.   The first last about six years.  Ran well.

So I bought a second one.  Got the computer it would work about 30 minutes before crashing.  Call the support line could never got a straight answer out of them.  Started to research some of my parts, turns out the motherboard and ram I picked were compatable only in a certain slot and I had to go into the BIO and change the setting.  Work fine after that( My son is still using it 6 years later).  But I have a real hard time believing they test it for the 24 hours they were suppose to before sending it.   It never say on for more than 30 minutes before crashing.

Thrid and last, did my research this time bought the MOB, RAM, GPU, and Power Suppy that was Recommend at TOM's Hardware.   I wanted no surprise.    Got my computer turn it on, and only the Fans and Hardrive come on.  Made sure nothing came lose in transport.  Tried again.  Nothing.  Called Tech Support.  It took me 3 days  to speak to someone who then told me someone would call me back.  That took 2 more days.   Bascially he had me do everything I had already tried,  then told me to send it back.   I did  two weeks later I got it back.   Guess what,   The same thing happened.   Sent it back again.   3 weeks later I get my PC.  This time it didn't start but that was because something was loose.  I can tell you their Costumer Support is bad to the point I will not use them again.    I have since learn that, they maybe use grey market parts or Rebrushied.

Good luck.

At the moment I am looking for a new computer for my son as a Christmas present I can tell you it won't be from Cyberpower.

I bought an Alienware Aurora 51 off Dell with the employee discount program I went through my company (because we are a major dell user its about a 10-15% discount).

I knew that I was paying more for the machine then if I rebuilt or built one myself but having done that the past several times I just wanted a computer that came with all the bells and whistles installed.  One of the things I found when I mod and build my own is that over time things just seem to go out of whack, (fans vibrate, registry corruption, HDs and motherboards failing etc.)  This meant I was always mucking around with the comp and now the fun of doing that has worn thin.

I am happy with the Alienware but had to have two service calls already (to do with the same issue in the last 8 months); a recirculating water pump failure initialy and replacement causing all the fans to run at full blast.  In both cases techs were onsite and willing to work with me on replacing it within three days of reporting the issue.

I like the look of the beast (I know makes me shallow) so overall its been a good buy for me.  But that is always the tradeoff if you want to go cheaper to do it yourself.

I received it a couple hours ago & have been migrating stuff over & setting it up.  Seems to be working well so far.  Steam client is updating now.

Yes I got an OS with it.  Windows 7 Home Premium.

Congrats on your new comp!  16 Gigs of RAM wow!  I thought 6 was a lot back when I got mine a couple years ago, looks like you can do plenty of multi tasking, that is for sure.  I had two Dells over the years, they ran ok for the most part, just was darn near impossible to do any upgrades on them due to all of the proprietary parts in them, so I opted for a real gaming rig the last time out.
