Basically, what Warlock has over Civilization is:

(a) spells

(b) multi-level worlds (you can farm XP in lower-level dungeons filled with monsters)

and I think that's it. It's a solid game, but it's not different enough to make a huge impact, I think.

Yes... but what is missing compared to Civ 4 or 5?

I suppose the maps are highly customizable with a random generator, yes?  Less factions/races, I suppose?

What's it missing?

So have I.

But watch a gameplay video of Civ5 and then watch a video of Warlock to see just how much Warlock looks like Civ5.

The only other explanation is that they have changed the Elven Legacy engine to look like Civ5.

Definitely not the Civ 5 engine. Warlock loads helluva lot faster just like Elven Legacy. Civ 5 still takes a bit to load on my computer. Anyways Warlock is very fun. I am very surprised they only want 20 bucks for it. I haven't had much time to play late game, but I plan to this weekend. Aside from a plethora of strong similarities, the fog of war is exactly the same as Civ5.

It's not so much spot the similarity as spot the difference.

Ditto. From various start-up items to unit id logos, this looks so much like Civ V that I won't be surprised if they got sued. On the other hand, since I'm a Civ maniac I will be able to jump right into the game

I was playing Civ V earlier in the day, and it sure does seem reminiscent of the series.

This is  GOOD thing,.in my opinion.

I am a Civ V convert. I LIKE one unit per hex. Those massive Alpha Stacks of Doom just weren't working for me. If you lost your Alpha Stack, you were screwed.

Hint: Build a second city fast, while researching archery, then pump out NOTHING but archers and the occasional warrior until you get to about 6. Then go find the closest Civ. Works great! (at least at the lower difficulties..I SUCK as a player!)

Does/will it require Steam to play?

I would like to know the answer to this question as well, as it looks pretty fun.

According to GamersGate:

  • DRM: Steamworks (Requires a 3rd party download and account)
  • Activation: Can be activated on Steam

Paradox is really trying to avoid packaging their own patches and sending them out to retailers, aren't they?  Hasn't that always been a 'support' job for someone at dev/publisher companies?  Sounds like downsizing.

Thanks Greybriar.  That's disappointing, but not surprising.

Actually there's Plenty to play without Steam. Matrixgames has a list a mile long of games already produced and a lot in the fire. Shrapnel doesn't use Steam, HPS doesn't use Steam, Tiller games don't use Steam that I'm aware of. Even Paradox made exception to Steam when they released Crusader Kings 2 and those that got it from Gamersgate don't have issues like the Steam ones do because of Steams automatic update. So, YES there's plenty of avenuse besides Steam. As long as Gamersgate doesn't require a client install and auto updates there will always be plenty of games outside of Steam to play and with the ability to save the setup.exe upon installation one will OWN their games they buy from Gamersgate not RENT them like Steam does everybody.

I just agreed wholeheartedly with a post of Wolverines. The Mayans were right!

True, but if you realy hate Steam then ther are ways to get the games to play offline without then need for the client at all. As long as you bought the game I see no problem with this. Your never going to face the possibilty of not being able to play the game you bought no matter what happens to steam.

If you guys are done with your Steam-bashing, you might like to know that there is a demo up.

Does it need Steam?

How does one do this, pray tell?

I'm grabbing the demo. But I still think this is just a glorified mod for Civ5. Hopefully this will include some of the stuff from the next Civ5 expansion so I can see what that will be like.

When you play the demo you'll see just how much unlike Civ 5 it really is.

Yeah, I came back to eat a few of my words.  It does look like Civ 5 and there are some similarities but it does play different.

If the Civ 5 engine was used it was altered significantly. I'll have to keep playing to see if it's worth $19.99.

Pretty sure it's been established that the game used the Fantasy Wars/Elven Legacy engine.   I really like them, but wish it had more than just linear scenarios in the campaign - it's only big drawback.  I guess this grand strategy version will be more to my liking.

I've played it up to the demo time out - and things were just getting tense and interesting! Really enjoyed it. It's Fantasy Civ basically. Feels smoother than Elemental, and more interesting than Conquest of Elysium. Some tough enemies out there, I think the key to success will be managing your spell usage.

Anyway, based on the demo, I've pre-ordered it. Very enjoyable.
