I guess I am having a nostalgic itch to push some cardboard counters around and so I'm wondering if anyone here has tried the solitaire games produced by Victory Point Games...the States of Siege Series has some interesting titles including the Russian Civil War which I have been eying. Has anyone played these games? Your opinions would be appreciated..thanks.

They are great games to play quickly solitaire. Not super deep but diverting with real decisions. Some of them are on the more hardcore decision making end and some on the lighter. I would recommend Soviet Dawn or Ottoman Sunset or Who WIll Tell the Emperor or Zulus as first. These have all recieved many positive reviews (the others too but these esp). Dawn of the Zeds also received well though it is more on the more complex side.

A new one on more complex side is the Malta one. So far positive reviews.

You can find a lot of reviews etc on Boardgamegeek and get players to comment on specific games.

My wife and family enjoy playing these cooperatively with me as well.

GMT games is going to publish a repack of them with nicer components but that won't be for quite some time.

Lin

p.s. why push cardboard instead of mouse? Well some of these design topics aren't available anywhere else. It can be nice to get away from the screen. The design style in these games are not available on computer. That being said Levee en Masse (french revolution) will be on ipad eventually. That's also another good one!

I've got an AAR of Zulus on the Ramparts, although I've still got a few turns to write up to complete it, it should certainly give you an idea of how it plays.

Thanks for your posts...I took the plunge and bought Barbarossa,

awn of the Zeds  and We must Tell the Emperor games and went to GMT and preordered Revolt and Revolution which includes the Russian Civil War, The English Civil War, and the French Revolution. I'm actually looking forward to  board gaming again......thanks

Glad to hear it. Barbarossa Campaign is actually my favorite. Really cleverly done. But it is easily the most complex. It's not a SoS game.

SoS games can be fun for their obscure topics. Most of us have a decent idea of the key events or issues in same Battle of the Bulge or DDay etc. But I didn't know much about the French Revolution or the Russian Civil War. Each card carries a mini bit of history about the event. So one of the pleasures is being surprsied.. and learning what is usually pretty fascintating history!

If you've not watched the Zulu movies I would to get yourself in the mood for Zulu!

Have fun!

Thanks...I had concentrated on the SoS games at first but the video review of Barbarossa convinced me to get that one too....luckily you can read the rules for these games as a pdf before even buying them which is a great help, and Zulu is on my list once I get the most out of the three I'll be getting. I know quite abit about the Russian Civil War so that one will be fun to get into once the GMT set is completed and shipped....going the GMT rout for the three SoS games as a preorder was less expensive than buying them seperately so it is worth the wait.....

You probably saw the Marco video review. He's a great wargame (and other boardgame) reviewer). Recommend subscribing to his video review list at BGG.

Those Marco videos are extremely valuable and has helped me decide on solitaire games to get, and to avoid. I am glad to see the GMT's State of Seige deluxe package of games. Revolt and Revolution, reach 330 pre-orders. It was at 280 when I preordered only a couple of weeks ago, so there is a good chance it might make a 3rd or 4th quarter cut.....

You most are likely right...preorders have slowed and now at the 430 range, then once it reaches 500, it will then need a goal of 750 before printing begins...I'm in no rush though as I  have plenty of other games to keep me busy. In fact I just re-purchased Tokyo Express, and Raid on St. Nazaire. I have not played them in decades and look forward to doing so again....
