Hi there,

I am struggling in my battle at Marathon (Greek-persian wars). I play the Athenians but the victory points are all on the coast and there's only 16 turns to get there and get rid of the Persians who are on the way...

Did anyone manage it and if yes, how?

Cheers

Don't know the series all that well and have never played this particular scenario.  But if it's designed correctly you should get all the points you need by defeating the Persian army, after which everything else should take care of itself.  The historical solution was for the Athenians to start chanting the Paian and charge the Persian line.  Theseus

and a few other demi-gods ) appeared out of nowhere and the center of the enemy line was broken.  Don't know about demigods, but if the system works you should be able to crack through the enemy's center and break their line in two.  If you can't do that, there's either something wrong with your grasp of the game mechanics, how you're applying them, or with the mechanics themselves.  Haven't gotten around to testing the system yet, but I will eventually.  Hopefully someone else will come along and give you a more satisfying answer.

[Is there any way to stop these stupid and childish smiley faces from appearing unbidden in the middle of my text?  I've tried to edit it out, but it seems to be substituting itself for an open parenthesis mark.  Is this the system going haywire or has someone had an unscheduled lobotomy]?

Philippe is correct, destruction of the Persian army is your main objective. Close in and charge your hoplites to reduce your losses from archery fire. The Greek hoplites will soon break the Persian units and you should win. The objective hexes are in the scenario to help direct the computer AI when it is playing the Greek side.

Phillipe is in correct, sorry.

The Athenians weakened their center (4 ranks), charged in, the Athenian center bowed back, but both Persian wings broke and with the Persian center threatened with encirclement the Persian army broke for the boats.

Which scenario is it? There are 4 different versions.

And that's why you should always look it up first and never, ever, ever do this kind of thing from memory.  Especially when you haven't looked at the inside of Herodotus in over twenty years.

Thank you for the replies,

I knew how the battle really took place (the athenian center was pushed back by the persian heavy infantery) but wanted to know how the battle could be won in the game as there's a short time limit (16 turns). I believe i can't charge with Hoplites wearing Sarissas, can i? And to order a forced march i would have to change the formation (columns), thus being more vulnerable to skirmishers, no?

I was playing scenario Marathon_a

Cheers

Historical questions: do you think that the persian wings broke because Ionian troops left the field on purpose?

Try "An Athenian War Cry". I set it where the Athenians have closed to just outside of bow shot, that's where the major action would really begin.

I am going to make another one, base on Fred Ray's interpretation. He wrote 'Land Battles in 5th Century B.C. Greece'. A wonderful book packed with ready to make scenarios almost on every page.
