So, I've played a bit of the multiplayer beta in preparation for a full review.
I like it.
There is a lot of tactical flexiibility thanks to the large maps (allowing room to maneuver) and large number of units. Of course, you have to unlock all of the "good" units, but you are given some basics in each category. You are limited to only five units in each category and better units are more expensive, but veteran players will still have better stuff simply because they have played the game more.
Response: Veteran players have better but much more expensive units. In short they have some more tactical options but in general its a points system and a new "good" player with some noggin can easily beat a leveled player with overwhelming cheap units. the higher tier units are not even necessarily better... just more expensive. For instance the AAA you get at the start of the game is imho in most cases better than any of the later tier units purely because it has better range, is cheap and better calibre. Still early days for me though.
Five units mean in each category means five tank types and all their sub variants as far as I have seen so far. So thats really 5 x 4 units in each of I think around 7 categories.
That said, I like the unit variety. You get scouts, tanks, tank destroyers, infantry (anti- air, anti-tank), artillery, anti-air artillery, helicopters, and a bunch of other types I am forgetting. Basically, there is something to counter any opposing strategy. And since you can't field everything, you'll have to choose a strategy and hope the enemy can't counter it with their unit selections.
This is one of the few games that makes supply of units really, really important: ammunition and fuel run out quickly, so you must have supply trucks/helicopters shuttle between your base and the front lines to keep your units properly fed. You can destroy enemy supply trucks and turn expensive, powerful units into useless flaming piles of burning metal.
Response: I have still not found out how to resupply my supply trucks
Captured objectives give resource points, and must be captured with fragile, expensive commander units. This makes base-switching uncommon as opposing sides are hesitent to send in their commander units if the enemy isn't cleared out. You must also capture and hold objective locations with big giant arrows because that's where new units appear.
The game has a fast pace and most games are under 20 minutes long, which I like.
I'm not a fan of the flat maps with the occasional plateau.
The graphics are nice and the interface is distinctive, though I'd like a list of all your units just in case you forget about things you ordered (like I do).
That's about it for now.
Just a couple of comments in response from me.
Medieval Real Time, Mount and Blade style Historical Combat.
Looks like I'll be putting that one off until it's bargain basement pricing, then.

What's the point of that? It will still be on steam.
If I'm going to rent it, may as well pay rental prices.
You remind me of old WWI cavalry general saying tanks will never catch on. Seriously - its here. Its going to stay whether you like it or not. Get over it or stop moaning about it. Personally I love steam - I never lose my games and re-installing is a snap.

You resupply your supply trucks by sending them to a FOB.
I have to play more to assess how "unfair" the unlocking is. Basic units, when used properly, can take out their counter (like the starting AA against a top-of-the-line helicopter).

I wasn't moaning about it in this thread. I stated I wasn't going to purchase it.
Looks like you're the one crying right now. About something as minor as my decision not to purchase anytime soon.
Steam fanboy attacks..
If it's something downright amazing, then perhaps I'll consider it. I factor DRM & provider considerations into my shopping decisions, however. There's nothing wrong with that.

LOL - I couldnt give a flying F**k if you buy it or not.
Now you can be called a steam fanboi ???...LOL ... its a digital delivery system for crying out load ... if the stupid smileys worked on this forum then you would be seeing the big laugh my arse off one right now. I dont care what you buy or where you buy it just tired of hearing you complain about it.
And its not renting the game - renting implies you use it for limited period. If steam lasts as long as some department stores have your grand children will be playing your games and not having to climb about in a dusty loft to find them. Hows that renting by anyones definition ?
Sorry - if you are going to critisise something at least base it on a remotely factual argument.

I'll criticize Steam as I feel. If you feel offended, then too bad. Your attempts to stifle such criticism is certainly some overzealous fan-boyhood.
I don't follow you around, complaining about your support of software companies with poor CS and worse DRM. If you don't want to hear my occasional criticism of your dearest retailers, then hit the ignore button.
Is there a unit cap? If so does it at least give you enough units where you feel like you can actually do something? Prefer not to build 2 tanks and then thats my unit cap.
Hard pressed on my right. My center is yielding. Impossible to maneuver. Situation excellent. I am attacking. - Ferdinand Foch -

It sounds like the cap is indirectly set by the available points to be captured on the battlefield, and in turn spent on more units. Besides the set starting .. purchase points?
There is a unit cap for each type of unit, but it's so high that I never worry about it; it's something like 20 units of each type for the basic units. You'll never be able to hit it unless you buy all of the same unit, which would be pretty dumb.
The starting points is set by the host, which also determines the victory points.

Thanks Jaguar makes sense....

Here is proof that its not the kind of game that requires leveling to win at. It does not matter what level you are.
Have a look below at the levels my random team were facing today.... the levels are next to their avatars. The levels are really just an indication of how much kit has been unlocked and how many games a person has played. Not a reflection that they know how to use the kit or that the kit they have does not cost a fortune to field if they choose to use the unlocked advanced kit.
It should be noted that the game stops before you can actually massacre the enemy and really get the upper hand usually. I have now played 5 games in total of which two dropped/crashed and have yet to lose. I have been lucky. Each time just as the satisfying part of completely having the advantage and having cornered the enemy in his base comes up, it seems to co-incide with the points limit being reached. I don't think I have one won by tracking down the enemy command vehicles.
The BETA stats will obviously reset in a few days when the game releases.
Thats me on the left in the red colours. Note I am close to his two FOB (suply depots) at the top left end of the map.
You can see an enemy column coming on to the map on the middle left attempting to cut my forces in two. But I have entrenched AT infantry to surprise and stop them. Helecopters are standing by to finish them off. I can see they are armoured infantry but am not exactly sure what kind. They turned out to be anti-tank infantry. My choppers took a beating from the APCs but the combination prevailed while my armour did their bit at the enemy base.
I used Jaguars resupply tip in this game. Moving supply trucks back and forth. I unlocked new supply trucks that are eight wheeler monsters with an MG on top. They have a huge supply capacity and are very fast on roads. However half way through the game my FOB became one of my other team mates I think because I captured the enemy FOBs at the opposite end of the map??
Medieval Real Time, Mount and Blade style Historical Combat.
Yeah, you can capture FOBs and supply trucks. I unlocked the supply helicopter for both sides and I'm never looking back. It takes forever to land but it's great for shuttling things more quickly, especially because I like to use artillery that runs out of ammo quickly.
I like the short games...20 minutes is just right, and I don't need to take out the whole enemy to win, especially because you can defensively "camp" with infantry in the game.

Well took the plunge and preordered based on your comments - I really like it. Played a bit of multiplayer. Artillery is a bit too easy to spot where they are firing from not necessarily bad but they should have a shoot and scoot command, and there are some things they can do with it to make it even better - but here hoping for some DLC. Overall dont think I am going to regret this purchase at all.

Glad to hear it. It is a fun game; I've basically unlocked everything useful at level 10, so it doesn't take too long to get access to the neccessary things. Here's what I roll with (bold are default units):
Jaguar -- or anyone else who has played the beta --
How high-end a system will you need to play this, I wonder? Looks pretty intensive, esp. which such large maps and large #s of units. ("Recommended Specs" are often rubbish, so I usually pay no attention to them.)
I wonder what an equivalent would be -- i have to guess this needs more (a lot more?) horsepower than World in Conflict. Maybe recent Total War games?

I think it may run better on similar (very high, for me) settings than World in Conflict. I've never had hiccups in performance with everything maxed out in WEE like I occasionally did in WiC. You can turn a bunch of stuff off, and the game will auto-detect the best configuration for your hardware.

Pleasantly surprised to hear that. I can see from your blog that your specs definitley exceed mine, but I can play WiC pretty comfortably on my machine with high settings (not maxed, but reasonably high). So looks like WEE would work for me. This game has now moved on to my "seriously considering it" purchase list...

Hi, can anyone tell me if the multiplayer beta includes a single player skirmish mode? Thanks
The BETA does not include either of those things.
In the full game there are two campaigns, one for the warsaw pact and one for NATO. Skirmish mode is ONLY in a single player vs AI capacity. It currently DOES NOT support two human players or more vs the AI.
