Mr Fargo has decided to go to Kickstarter with Wasteland 2!

This makes me happy, though I' not how whether it's sustainable this kickstarter method, seems to be the in thing.

What is Wasteland 2?

Wasteland was the game that was the inspiration for the Fallout series.  It was an amazing game for its time - 1988.

Details can be found at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wasteland_(video_game)

If it's anything like the first it will be one of the classics of the century. Wasteland was a game after the armageddon/holocaust of the war to end all wars. A group of characters that you makeup much like a rpg only with sci-filike stats roam the barren lands searching for the meaning of life after life (adlib) and get into all kinds of things and discoveries. You could create a Doctor, Weapons specialists, Diplomat, Armaments specialists and others or a combination of them into one character. There were literally dozens of attributes to choose from to create your characters.

They make their way to New Vegas or Old Vegas however you want to picture it only to find huge robotic aliens like from the movie War of the Worlds only with long metal legs and feet this time around. It was a good story and had many sidetrack quests you could get involved in. Graphics were 8bit and probably not a one of you would play the origional game today and feel the same as those of us who experienced it in all its glory when it was new. It even had bathrooms or Restrooms rather with even a quest event from one of them.

I'm not sure Wasteland I can be improved upon, oh sure they can make a new story and probably make it real time rpglike but it just won't be the same experience as Wasteland I if it is not the same world and engine of Wasteland I. Improve the graphics but leave the gameplay engine alone which was scroll action combat feature and written scrolling information as you went along. No voice acting, no sparkles just pure solid gameplay and a great story.

Closest thing to it nowadays would be Fallout I & II but certainly NOT III that FPS bs doesn't bring the feeling of Wasteland or Fallout to he forefront at all.

The initial post was so much inside baseball that I could not decipher it.

Here is the best information that I can find:  http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/02/16/brian-fargo-turning-to-kickstarter-for-wasteland-2/

Basically the story is this.  Brian Fargo was one of the key guys in Wasteland released in 1988.  Fargo followed up by being the head developer for Fallout 1 & Fallout 2.  Fallout New Vegas follows this same story trend.

Fargo bought the rights to Wasteland more than a decade ago.  He thinks he needs $1 million to develop Wasteland 2 and is using Kickstarter as a fund raising device.

This whole story may be vaporware at its finest.  But I hope that Fargo can pull it off.

Dang! You had to bait me by throwing in that last sentence.  I was an avid Fallout 1 and 2 player.....and I thought Fallout 3 did a great job in bringing the immersion/feel of those classics to the Washington DC wasteland.  A great game in the Fallout tradition, as is New Vegas.   I never played Wasteland so I can't comment on that.

I never really played Wasteland but it always reminded me of the old RPG Gamma World that I used to play in high school.

Oh, and on the whole Kickstart thing. I'll say again, I hope Bill Spieth is watching this.

I beleive he wants to make it that those who played the original would want. The reason why he can't get it made is because I expect he doesnt wnat to make it realtime of FPS etc etc.

The new wasteland will probably never see the light of day or will be a fail like his Bards Tale remake I posted a link to above. Classic turn based RPG's with good stories are unfortunately dead.

I wonder if not seeing Bard's Tale II through rose-colored hazy memories of Bard's Tale I makes all the difference.

I actually enjoyed the Bard's Tale remake.  I got a kick out of the fact that it was set in a real place (well, sort of) with otherworldly elements layered on top of it it.  I also liked the way the plot resolved itself [NO SPOILERS !].  The battles got repetitive after a while, but that's true of many of these games.  The over-the-shoulder view took a little getting used to, and I recall not being totally thrilled with the interface and the way the mouse worked.  I found myself looking forward to the next musical number and wishing there were more (It's bad luck to be you is a great song).  The one thing I couldn't figure out, though, was why the anti-hero didn't have a  Scottish accent -- what was someone from the East End of London doing that far north?   Maybe the developers were afraid that no one would be able to understand what he was saying if he had a really thick Scottish accent ?

The original Bard's Tale was bundled with my copy of Bard's Tale II.  I tried playing it to see what all the fuss had been about and really didn't like it, and probably would have liked it even less if it had just been updated to a modern game.  I'm a big fan of the first Realms of Arkania game (Blade of Destiny) which had really terrible graphics, but which ruins you for simple dungeon crawls, which is what Bard's Tale I looked to me like it was from the little time I invested in it.  The plot in Bard's Tale II works very well and can be quite funny at times.

So I wouldn't call Bard's Tale II a fail.  Badly flawed in places, but with more things right than wrong.

Starflight 1 & 2 are now available on www.gog.com

I can't get one of them to work properly on windows 7.  Both work fine in windows 2000.

I would love to see him succeed, but Wasteland's time has come and gone. FPS is the name of the game nowadays, multi-party RPGs are no longer in vogue. Damn............................................................................

One mistake, and you're sliding down the razor blade of defeat, and a dull, rusted, and poisoned blade at that.
