Is steam going to be the only distribution method? Games for windows too, I guess no stand alone boxed version.
PC gaming isn't dying; it's committing suicide. Last edited by Hentzau : 27 APR 2012 8:13pm

Xicano,
Could you expend on that a bit. I have seen references to tower defence games but I do not understand what they are.
Best wishes,
Steve

Welcome back from cryogenic dethawing!
Tower defense games are a type of game originally a variant of Starcraft I believe. Basically you face waves of enemies travelling through a set path and the numbers and types increase with each wave. Your job is to build up defensive structures (towers) which automatically attack the enemy and destroy them, preventing them from reaching the exit point. The goal of the game is to let as few enemy pass as possible and while I'm not a big fan of the genre a good game of this type has a fair amount of different strategy involved.

...also i should mention that (like in other tower defense games) you can place barrier to either slow down or divert the stream of enemy units thrown at you, which keeps them longer exposed to the fire from your 'towers'.
The places where you can build towers are fixed, so the strategy is about what building to place where and when with the limited resources (they fill up with enemy units destroyed) available at a given time. also towers degrade by enemy fire and can be repaired or upgraded with spending of resources of course

It is definitely the best of the TD genre. And the "cold war" follow up is even better. Playing as John Rambo and hearing his "ramboisms" is the best!
When choosing a console that could stream netflix and some occaisonal lite gaming for my Godkids when they would sleep over, I was stuck between the box and the ps3 (already had a bluray player). But once I saw toy soldiers, that sealed the deal for me. It really is a fun game and as Mike_GER mentioned you can take direct control of the "towers" and blast away.
If I didn't have it already on my xbox I would buy it. If it had the multiplayer component, I would snatch it up in a second. If htey have a demo available check it out.

I watched a 20 minute Youtube lets play video before deciding to buy as I'm not so keen on most tower defence games. The ability to duck into your various emplacements and units, and the fact I can play this as a 'lean back' game using my X360 controller (I don't have an Xbox, just a controller) sealed the deal.

True. I've avoided Windows Live until now, didn't like having to sign up.

I've been playing about about 90 minutes and have just completed the 3rd Campaign mission, Bosschen Woods. It took me 3 attempts to take out the monster Tsar tank.
First Tower Defence type game I've ever liked in truth. There is enough going on to keep me firefighting without feeling overwhelmed, and the visuals, sound and music are lovely.

Best wishes,

I really enjoyed it. The difference with this one is that your towers are on circular 'orbits' around the thing you are protecting. You can rotate the orbits on the fly to reposition your towers. In some missions the orbits are locked so you can't rotate them. In others they rotate constantly. Then there are challenge scenarios that are variations on the main compain that make them more difficult and an arcade more that keeps the waves coming until you die.
The campaign is dripping with B sceince fiction movie atmosphere. In the beginning it may seem difficult since it plays a bit differently than other tower defense games due to the tower orbits, but once you get used to it it really isn't that hard.

I wonder how much money Microsoft gives developers/publishers to keep using this crap software.

It is just annoying sometimes for when you just want to jump into a game without having to sign in or wait for updates to be found, downloaded, and installed.
I can see the reason to have it for games that are cross-platform, but if they are sticking to one platform or will not be inter-mingling with others, it is just another added step. At least with Steam it makes sense because it is the system from where you buy, install, and launch games, but GFWL is just a tacked-on service for Microsoft to bring the Live experience to all games.

The worst offender was Grand Theft Auto IV. If you bought the game through Steam, you had to:
1. Run Steam and start the game.
2. Then, also run Games for Windows Live at the same time.
3. Then, also run Rockstar Games Social Club at the same time.
So you had three applications running in the background at the same time, in addition to having your computer run a slow, poorly optimized game.
