Status : Offline | I have only seen the first season of the HBO series but that was enough to make me a fan. Plan to read the books after the series is complete because I hate having to wait for further books in a series for months on end. I also had high hopes for the game but after reading the reviews I scratched it off of my games list. At this point I guess I have to assume that the GoT mmo will also be a mess.

I'm afraid George RR Martin won't live long enough to finish the books at the rate he is going. Hopefully, he has everything sketched out so someone else can finish.

This. Also hoping I live long enough to read them. Martin seems to be more interested in working on various GOT spin-offs--and enjoying his newfound fabulous wealth--than in finishing the novels. Can't say I blame the man. Fabulous wealth can be distracting, or so I am given to understand.

"Distracting" is not really the most apt word for wealth.
I would contend wealth, ultimately, gives people greater access (which translates to experiences) to life's wonders, i.e., world-wide travelling and exploration, exotic cars, hot-assed women, homes in multiple climes, etc...etc...
Feel me???

hehe, some of my friends were joking that they were going to send him gift certificates to health food stores so he wont have a heart attack before he finishes the series. I've only recently seen a picture of him, but he is a big boy.

Fortunately I have such a gaming backlog that I don't feel any pressing need to go out and buy it today; I can wait for bargain basement pricing and then try it out. Still, I had high hopes.
I guess I'll be patiently awaiting War of the Roses, and pinning my hopes on that game now...

That is what I expect as well and why I am holding off on the books. Looks like another Robert Jordon scenario.

Well at least the Jordon will wrap things up with Sanderson's final volume coming later this year....what a tedious journey it was, but I'm determined to see how it plays out since I invested so many damn years to it...

These are great books. I would say take the plunge anyway. They're worth reading even if you wind up having to make up the ending yourself.

Status : Offline | I read yesterday that Martin said he has given a high level view to HBO so they can finish the series if he dies, but he won't allow anyone to finish writing the books. It sounds like he is well into the sixth book and plans on finishing the series with the seventh book, but may do an eighth if he can't finish up everything. So, I guess that'd be 5 to 10 years for him to compete everything.

The publication dates so far aren't really cause for optimism:
Book 1 - 1996
Book 2 - 1999
Book 3 - 2000
Book 4 - 2005
Book 5 - 2011
Especially given his visible association with the TV show (extensive), the Cyanide game, and various other spinoff products, plus he's obviously an oldish, overweight man, I think there's legitimate reason for concern that he will never finish.
Martin has published one chapter from Book 6, The Winds of Winter, on his website.

However, GRRM also writes children novels.... I hope he sticks to GoT and Dunk and Egg. GRRM does not seem to worry much about dying before GoT is over, so I will share his optimism concerning the main GoT series.
I do have doubts about GRRM finishing Dunk and Egg, since the estimate is for a total of 6 to 12 novellas in that series, which is a lot, and I doubt he will write them 2 or 3 books in succession. I feel like Dunk and Egg is only his secondary project.
HBO followed the novel closely during the first season. One exception was the duel between Ned and the incest knight. Ideally GRRM should just tell HBO to follow the novels and trust them to do an efficient job, which HBO has proven to be very capable of.
As for the game by Cyanide, I wasn't looking forward that much to it anyway. It seemed like a railroaded RPG, very linear, you have to play pre-determined characters, cannot create your own. Sounds more like a movie than an RPG.
I prefer rpgs like Baldur's Gate II and Dragon Age Origins ( NOT dragon age ii ). BGII and DAO allowed for a lot of freedom and meaningful decisions that affected quests and the game world.

A couple of early GOT reviews. Not good, to say the least, and agreement seems to be general:

I think having read the entire 6,000+ pages of the novel series twice - and only avoiding a third time because I want to escape full obsession - makes me a fan, right? So I really had my hopes up, especially since the developers flapped their lips so much about how Bioware-like this game was going to be. Sigh.
But if only somebody were to make a really good GOT/SOFAI strategy game, I could get over my disappointment. In the meanwhile, I'll wait for the GOT CKII mod to be completed.
I broke down a few weeks ago and bought the 1st season dvd set. Was fairly impressed, especially when the dragon babies showed up. Never did read the books may get around to that since I have too much time on my hands.
