Anyone playing this? It seems pretty big news at the moment, increasing Arma II sales 500% allegedly. It needs the Combined Ops pack or the original plus Operation Arrowhead. Website is here: http://www.dayzmod.com/
I love the idea of a vast empty world filled with zombies and other scavengers, and having read about it and watched videos I am soooooo close to picking up the Operation Arrowhead expansion to play it To be honest, I would have bought it already but Arma has always given me motion sickness, so I'm wrestling with spending £15 to play something I know I'd love, but also knowing I may only play it 3 /4 times before motion sickness forces me to give up on it. I wish I could play this without the worry of feeling queazy, as it looks amazing.
I'm interested, but I've never gone for MMO's with a sizable player-killer element. Apparently noobs being picked off at the beach as they respawn (gee, sounds rather like baby turtles or something) is a big sport. I'm fine with pvp if there is some opt-out element involved, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. Pity.

From what I've read about it, I get the impression that the PVP makes the game. Without the risk and fear of bumping into other players, and potentially losing everything, the game would be flat and too easy. There are no teams, so even when working together you have to trust that the people you are with will not shoot you in the back. I've seen it described as a 3D roguelike - for me it is the fear of losing everything that makes it interesting.
I've been playing it off and on for about 2 weeks now. When things click and you find the right group of players, it's a tonne of fun. The nights suck! They're long and they're really, really dark. It kinda sucks that most players just crank up the gamma on their monitors as a cheat.
I think the game will end up being a victim of its own success. As more people start playing, you'll see a huge growth in the number of idiots who show up just to kill other players and make their lives miserable. I've already seen it happen a few times although I don't think the original intent of these particular idiots was just to ruin the game for others. They were new to ArmA and new to DayZ and they were finding the controls overwhelming and so they eventually just spammed the chat with whines and then unloaded into everyone else's backs.
Here's a tutorial video on how to install it. This guy's using Steam, but the procedure's the same for other versions, just the file location is different.
It doesn't mess with the base game (you just delete the command line parsers when you don't want to use it), but it doesn't play well with other mods like ACE.
