is there a 'final verdict' on Vicky 2? playable, or still some patches away? kinda seems like folks gave up on this one
I've tried playing it about four times. And all those times I get very sick of constantly waging influence contests in minor nations. It sounds cool but the gameplay is just playing Pop Goes The Weasel when the other AI nations are constantly moving their focus in the same ones you're doing. So much of the early game is just reacting to influence allocations. Which isn't very fun. Also, there's no challenge in the economy, once it gets rolling pretty quickly - endless money.
People also complained about how all the AI did was build buttloads of big naval vessels later in the game, to get all the Prestige from them and the win. That was supposedly to be addressed in the (overpriced) expansion - yet another example of the old Paradox way of Paid Patches. There are reports of the game speed choking in later years, too.
So - still not looking good IMO. Economy broken, Influence sub-game annoying, AI Belgium building thirty dreadnoughts (ex.), and other assorted drek. Can get quite boring since you don't do much (other than jockey Influence) for awhile. I've not played the expansion, but I've yet to hear that it fixed much of the issues in the base game. As usual, there's a mod that kinda helps the economy issues a bit but I've not tried it.
^ i feared this was the case. i recall the problems with Rebel spam in the release of Vicky 2, which i guess was solved, but these problems sound deeper -- and the sense that the game kind of just 'plays itself' is disppointing. (And Paradox's paid patches in the form of "Expansions!" is frustrating and a large part of the reason i haven't bought a paradox title in a long while.)

I picked this up mostly for CK2 and SOTS2, whenever it is fixed, and today I got an e-mail from Amazon for $23 off of Hearts of Iron, which I'm not interested in and Europa Universalis 3 Chronicles which makes it $7. Is that a good deal for this version? I've always been interested in the series, but never pulled the trigger.
Here is the description from Amazon:
Europa Universalis III: Chronicles also brings the expansion packs Heir to the Throne and Divine Wind to retail shelves for the first time, deepening the experience and extending an already robust playing time.
Also include are the previously released expansions Napoleons Ambition and In Nomine.
I enjoy the CK series more, but there is still fun to be had in EU3. The Chronicles version is the whole package, all expansions included.
While there were still a couple smaller things that bugged me in the last vanilla update I played in EU3, it's relatively solid overall. There is a good amount of large mods for it, so that raises the value too. I prefer the MEIOU mod, when I feel like something different than vanilla.
