Topic: Crusader Kings franchise 75% off on Steam for next 24 hrs...
Don't normally post here, but thought you'd like the heads up that Crusader Kings II etc. is 75% off on Steam at the moment, making CKII £7.50 or all the current DLC included for £9.50
Likely to purchase at this price... looks like a slightly more accessible way of getting into the Paradox grand strategy games - and what I really want to do is get my head around EU3 (which I've now bought about 3 times but never been able to get past the "AAAAAaaaaahh what am I supposed to do" stage)

Who do I need to contact for this?
For my sanity James, I need you to really drive it home to me what you like about CK2. Wading through people to find a wife? Finding a wife for someone in your court? Choosing who will educate your kids? What kid needs to be wacked because they will cause trouble when you die? The feature-limited warfare? I just don't understand. Do you really need a good imagination so you can make up your own details to make the story interesting?

This is sort of it. Beyond the fact that it's Paradox's best and most approachable game, with character detail, military recruitment, council actions, events, improvements, AI, laws, and multiplayer, it's following your bloodline through the ages and seeing what happens, backstabbing others and getting stabbed yourself. It makes for great stories, and it's the game responsible for my venture into video to accompany my reviews, as I had lots of fun doing my six videos for the game.

I get more invested with the characters in this game than most any other. It's not often that you grow to hate some little digital person, and get to plot their death/imprisonment/banishment or downfall. Or to do a victory dance when the head of your line is successful in a risky venture. It may also seem that repeatedly having to tell your first son to stop trying to kill his stepmother is an annoyance, but juggling the personalities (and mainly manipulating them) is rare fun.
Carving out an empire (or making yourself wealthy, a saint, crusader, or despot ... whatever you wanna do) is only part of the game. It has a lot of facets to it, in an open setting, and that's a big strength too. Spreading (or beating back) religion, some straightforward building/improvement, the 'Plot' system, etc ... it's easily the most feature-robust Pdox engined game there is. The potential for future additions & mods is quite impressive too.
I've found some of Paradox' own games to be fairly dull (like Victoria 2) but this one keeps you busy with varying decisions to be made on a regular basis.
Has there been any notable gameplay additions since release? I haven't touched the game beyond the initial demo.
There have been a few nice tweaks and interface additions.
I can't comment on it lately, as I've been using a different version that contains more extras. Not really sure which additions are part of regular updates and which will be in the expansion.
Speaking of gameplay additions, 1.06 (rumoured to be out next week, I sure hope so!) will introduce strong and weak claims.
Strong claims will be the ones we have now, and weak claims will be the ones gained by the not immediate family of a title-holder, and they can only be pressed in case of special circumstances (during a succession war and such)
You know, it really does bug me that I just don't see what is so entertaining about this game. I wish I did. I will probably give it another chance sometime, but now wasn't the time. The choices seemed repetitive and boring to me.

Aren't you the one who said he preferred the EUs over the CKs?

Yep, I did. I'm not a huge EU 3 fan, but I thought it was a good game. I didn't think the series became good until #3. To me, it just seems like there is more strategy involved, but it has been a while since I played it. Not that The Sims is really a close comparison to CK2, but I enjoyed The Sims 3 for about 5 hours or so, then thought it got dull real fast. I felt like I was doing the same things over and over and that is the feeling I get from CK2. Granted I only played the demo, but it does reveal all of the different actions one can take. I can see how people who enjoy making up their own stories can get into it (like The Sims), but I play these things like a strict strategy game.
