I have been working for some time on a expansion graphics mod for the HPS “The Renaissance” game. This mod which will be called “REN II” will feature over 75 armies along with 1000 new unit and 960 new leader images. The modd covers the same period as the original game but expands its scope to include warfare in Africa, Eastern Europe, South America, Inner Asia and the Far East.

As part of the modd creation process I have built a “REN Modd Kit” to speed matters up this is now available on my website (where I plan to post updates on progress.) at http://snapupwargames.weebly.com/ or you can download it direct from here.

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/54384751/REN%20Modding%20%20Kit.zip

There is also a Sneak Peek folder with a MS Word document showing the armies and unit images planned for REN II and some sample unit graphic tiles to wet your apatite.

Enjoy

Ian

Interesting project, i think that REN needs love from mod comunity, is not a bad serie but engine is not perfect for it.

I am with you that center in 2D is a good idea, is better have a good 2D counter mod than 3D (i never use this view in HPS/Tiller games) maybe as suggestion you can ask to Volcanoman if you can use NATO symbol mod from Nap titles to create an alternative 2D counter mod (i use it in Nap titles to, is good to see easy and fast what kind of unit is on map).

New scens... nice, REN is not short in scens but add more is allways good.

Good luck with your mod.

PD: a little example of NATO mod is only a copy past using paint.net

What I had in mind here was to use 3D  counter blocks to replace the 3D graphics but not having a 3D environment to modd makes  modding easier. Also I have just posted some screenshots of alternative leader graphics ties on my website.

Kind regards

Ian

Full instructions will be included with the mod when its released. However  basically the files that state with 2D go in the Map folder, all other graphics files be in the Info folder and all map scenario and OOB files go in the main decretory. The will also be quite a lot of deleting to do but that will all be spent out as well.

I like the sound of this.

If attempted, it would be sweet to have a template to do this for a lot of other HPS titles, turning the often inadequate 3d mode into something desirable.

+1

This might work, and might work well -- if, say, the counter block graphics are generic (infantry, cavalry, artillery, leader, etc.) silhouettes ala the 2D counters in the John Tiller Battleground Series.  It might not work so well if the counter block graphics are NATO icons.

I'm confused.  You have the ability to create new maps, OOBs, and scenarios for these new armies/units, right?  (And for the maps especially, by what means?)  Otherwise, what's the point of an "expansion graphics mod"?

If new scenarios (etc.), can you forecast a release date/schedule?

The only thing you cannot create from scratch  for the game are completely new maps. However there is a sub map feature which enables you to cut rectangles out of the 88 existing maps in the game.

Also trenches barricades and bridges are not built in to the maps and are added in the scenario editor.

For a lot of the battles taking place in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East the terrain was pretty featureless in any case and there are large expanses of this to be cut out from existing maps such as those for Chaldiran, Marj Dabik, Mohacs and Kokenhausen,

I will be releasing open beta test versions of the game in a number of stages roughly for each 75 to 130 unit images done. The first stage which will have about 130 images will contain the images necessary to fight the 2 Ottoman Mamluk battles of Marj Dabik and Raydaniyah as well as versions of these two scenarios that use the new graphics. Also I hope to include a completely new scenario for the battle of Adana in 1488 another Mamluk Ottoman clash which the Mamluk’s won.

The next instalment should include the Persian / Ottoman battle of Chaldiran and 1 or two completely new scenarios also featuring the Persians.

You can follow the progress of my mod and see the latest unit and leader images added to the respective files on my blog at http://snapupwargames.weebly.com/

Regards

Ian
