My only minus with the game is that unit designs are kept in a long list, so its pretty hard to remember whats your newest design and do I need to design a newer heavy mech?

You may want to look at the "Divisiions" option.

While the combat was sometimes frantic I didn't find it engaging. There was a disconnect sometimes as to why I crushed a scenario or did poorly. I never felt motivated to design my own units either. On paper the game seemed like something I would like, but wasn't. Now that a demo is out people on the fence can give it a try. As an aside, I didn't like Gratuitous Space Battles either, but Gratuitous Tank Battles was a bit better. I could make more sense of the outcomes at least.

I really like Defense Grid. I guess the problem with GTB is that there isn't really a story to it. However, the combinations of troops you can design are really cool but it's almost overwhelming with all the choices you have. Maybe that's why I like Defense Grid more, it's more focused and has a quirky narrator.
