I've used Norton for a few years with few issues.  I had this happen on one game out of the 30 or so I have downloaded.

One way around it is to go into Norton and set up a directory and tell Norton not to scan stuff you download into it.  Works like a charm.

Security is enough like a wargame to be an enjoyable hobby for me, using finite resources to the best effect even if it's a totally defensive battle. Reminds me of Rorke's Drift sometimes.

At Wilders Security forum there's a thread in the "other anti-malware software" topic called "What is one security program you can't do without?" At five pages and counting hardly anyone lists an AV. Most often mentioned is Sandboxie. It's what I use, and it's so strong I haven't used an AV for a couple of years, and no infections. Layering is the trick. Other good programs to have are Malwarebytes Anti-malware and Hitman Pro on-demand, a firewall/HIPS program like Privatefirewall or Online Armor, Emsisoft Emergency Kit, and a system image and backup program so if the worst happens you'll be up and running in minutes. There are lots of ways to fight this battle other than running an AV full-time, but if I were using one it would be MSE because it has the fewest false positives. Amazingly, none in some big tests.

Only problem with that approach, what if the files you are downloading actually do have some kind of virus/malware attached?  How does it get caught if your not scanning those files?

Don't use Norton.

I've recommended that to people quite often.  Only some of them bother to change.

I second this as Norton is totally overrated...even the free version of AVG has the sense to prompt you whether you want to keep an unknown file....

I've always found Microsoft Security Essentials, MalwareBytes, Advanced Care and Unhackme to be sufficient AV covers. Unhackme is probably the best thing that every happened to computers because it detects what others don't and actually fixes the issue that the virus made. One of the worst viruses I ever got turned every file and folder into a "hidden" one an Unhackme turned them all back.

I use Avast, and I keep MalwareBytes installed. In the Student Help Desk on campus we install MSE for students who don't have an AV, and most of these are laptops that have Norton or McAfee and who knows what else on there.

I've repaired customers computers who had both McAfee and Norton installed on them, and running at the same time.  Talk about a clusterf(*).  And they wondered why their computer was running so slowly (and "axing veird").   It was momentarily amusing watchign these two dogging AVs slugging it out.. sometimes against each other.
