I have not been down to the USA lately as I prefer to travel in France and Eire.

Last time i went south I was in Wash DC (not the one nearby) around election time.

It seemed to me soon-to-be President Obama had an enormous popularity among those people

who felt marginalized or somehow disenfranchised.  I travelled around Alexandria where

the service industry people thought he was great and the fat old white guys that lived there

(and I was conventioning with) were fiercely pro-McCain.  This action on his part shows

he knows where some of his votes are and appears to me as a fairly sensible pre-election move.

BTW after that election I went directly to Belgium and France.  There was an out pouring of

positive feelings about the US like I hadn't seen before.....or, unfortunately, since.

Anyway I am still a sorta fat, sorta old non voter so my views are only that.

cheers

I can understand your observational description of "enormous popularity", but how do you come by "felt marginalized and disenfranchised"?  It sounds rather imaginative bordering on fantasy.  Your contrast of "service industry" and "fat old white guys" lends credence to that conclusion.  Now I can believe that Europe had an outpouring of glee which proves to me we indeed elected the wrong guy.  European choices are generally the wrong choices; exhibit A Monsieur Hollande.

I merely shared my observations knowing that you would offer your expert opinion on such matters.

As far as electing the "wrong guy"....not my choice.  The will of the people and all that.  We cannot judge

the performance of a man who was not elected to the job.  That would surely be in the realm of fantasy.

Trolling for what; attention?  In fact we can and should judge BEFORE we elect anyone to office and doing so is rather simple.  First, what have they accomplished before?  What experience do they have that suggest they can do the job?  What demonstrated expertise have they shown that they can even recognize who to hire to provide needed expertise?  What examples and experience of leadership do they possess?  Who are the people they've most closely associated themselves with in the past?  What are the pertinent statements they've made which define their positions as well as who they are?  It's not a crap shoot; and while it is a flaw of democracy that such vetting is not automatic nor even required for participation that does not let us off the hook for the bad choices or worse, apathetic choices we make.  The Germans are still paying the price for trivializing the responsibility that comes with democracy.

I know this is all over your head but you do offer the opportunity to vent.  I guess for that it would be wrong to curse you.
