Hi everyone,

I am sure a lot of people know and love Axis and Allies games. I am sure less people here know, that there is a very good open source (free) engine called TripleA available, with a lobby to play online. For more information and download TripleA:

http://triplea.sourceforge.net/mywiki/TripleA

TripleA covers all Axis and Allies boardgames, but more important it features a lot of very good user created maps and allows for a lot of options. The user created maps range from fantasy maps to science fiction maps and many historical maps like Napoleonic and Romean type of games.

I am responsible for uploading maps at Triplea and I am a map maker myself. My latest project is called Total World War covering a global ww2 map starting in 1941.

Total World War features:

- A global ww2 map on a strategic level

- A unique technology tree, which allows for advanced units like rockets etc.

- Battle modifications based on terrain

- A great pool of available special units like Marines, Tactical Bombers etc.

- A concept for minor nations like Canada, Finnland etc.

- A political concept for nations like Spain, Brazil etc.

- A beautiful manual, available as pdf

For more information:

http://tripleadev.1671093.n2.nabble.com/Total-World-War-tp5993258.html

Here are some screenshots to get an impression:

Thanks for your interest, don´t miss the opportunity to play a free game!

Edit:

I forgot to mention:

Total World War focuses on a historical accurate setup(as far as possible in a ww2 game, where both sides should be able to win). The map starts in december 1941 right after operation typhoon failed, with a Russian counterattack. In pacific it starts with Japan attacking Pearl Harbour, Phillippines and Burma.

An image form the Eastern Front starting position, the frozen symbol shows the territories, without possible actions for the German player.

We also tried to catch as much atmosphere as possible with historical event popups like this:

They occur when certain territories are captured or units are present.

Have fun!

From the link.

TripleA is a turn based strategy game. TripleA comes with multiple games and over 100 more games can be downloaded from the user community. Supports single player vs AI, hot-seat, Play by Email, and a hosted online lobby.

Now the next question would be "How Good is the AI"? Is it better than vanilla version of computer Axis & Allies? Is it better than Iron Blitz version of Axis & Allies? The last best operational or global strategy game I played with a decent AI was "Empire Deluxe".

It's free, what do you have to lose except time? As I said, there are different AIs, some are better that others. You can mix and match them as well.

I've always intended to try this out, but I didn't realize  it had other (non-WW2) periods.  Now that may get me moving on it.

wow, thanks for this, Rolf !  Definitely brings back memories.  I had no idea about this project -- and your Total War variant looks very cool.

Thanks for the feedback.

Yes AI...it does a good job for standard maps. It really helps to get used to everything, when you are new to the game. But once you are above beginner level, or when you are a good strategy player from start, AI is no match. Like in nearly every other turn based strategy game, without given boni, the ai sucks. Triplea provides the possiblity to boost ai with certain boni, but tactical...

However, the best thing about Triplea is the multiplayer lobby, most of the time 1vs1 games, cause it allows to save and continue another day more easily, if it is a bigger map. There are always people around and it should be no prolbem to find opponents.

Total World War map however is the most complex map available for Triplea and makes use of so many features, that ai is not able to play it, so for getting used to the map it is ok, but once you adapted the basics, I highly recommend to go to the lobby and look for a real challenge versus a human.

The Triplea Engine has been updated. There is a new stable version available. All known bugs have been fixed, ai has been improved, all laggs are history, lobby has been improved to give more information, some new features are available and a lot more.

The Total World War has been updated as well, to make use of the new features provided by the engine. Balance has been worked on and the last territory changes have been included. The next update we are already working on will give it its final shape, including a huge graphical improvement.

If you are still not convicened that this map will provide you with endless hours of a challening game experience for free, you may want to have a look at the very professional looking manual (all credits to graphic master Hepster):

Get it here:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/tripleamaps/files/rules/TotalWorldWarManual.pdf

Have fun with it, I hope to see a few more guys from here in our lobby.

A new engine version of Triplea is available.

http://tripleadev.1671093.n2.nabble.com/TripleA-1-7-0-1-Beta-has-been-released-td7583551.html

Total World War map has been updated as well, current version is 2.7.3.

http://tripleadev.1671093.n2.nabble.com/Total-World-War-December-1941-Version-2-5-td7581632i280.html#a7583599

Is there anything better than games for free? No DLCs, no online checks, no drm and for nothing...

http://tripleadev.1671093.n2.nabble.com/2013-TripleA-Donation-Drive-td7583455.html

To make sure it stays free and gets supported further, consider to donate as much as you like,

if you enjoy it or just like the idea of free games.

Here is a screenshot from round 1:

The very professional and highly detailed manual looks like this:

Have fun, I hope to see some people online in our lobby, feel free to slap or ask me, if you need any instructions.

This looks great and I'd like to give it a go, but I’m a bit concerned due to the Java requirement…considering the Java hacks

from several months back.  How much of a security issue/concern is it if I install Java, but keep it disabled in my browsers?

Will TripleA still run?  I'd only be interested in the single player vs AI aspect of the game.  Thanks!

thx all.

Don´t worry IanC Triplea will stay open source.

@steve58: We never had a single issue with security yet, Java is running on millions of machines and devices, there is a great interest in keeping it secure, just use the latest version of it. Other than that, you don´t enable java in your browser automatically or use a plugin, if you only use java itself. Additional you can block any communication other than the one done by triplea from java in your firewall.
