When the original is tried to be copied, unsuccessfully, for 18 years, doesn't that tell us something?

I don't need great visuals to enjoy a strategy game, but I can't play games that are just ugly. I've tried to play some of the classics, like Master of Orion and the graphics are just unbarable for me.

You can only have 4 units in a mission, for starters (eventually, unlocked up to a max of 6). What to split your team into multiple small squads? Forget it!
No more time units. Instead, only move-action or move-move per turn. That removes a lot of the flexibility that I loved in X-Com.
Fortunately, Xenonauts is filling in the shoes of a remake that seems to be closer to what the original was. Their Kickstarter campaign ended recently, and I think it's coming out later this year. There's a demo if you scroll down this page http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/69341191/xenonauts?ref=live I was instantly sold on this and backed up the project as soon as I tried the demo. X-Com with a modern interface!

That's the reason I stopped buying "classics" from GOG (or anywhere for that matter). I bought them remembering how great they were just to boot them up and find out: A) They are just flat out ugly and the graphics are so primitive that its hard to follow some games on a modern moniter. B) They are also lacking all the modern gameplay "conveniences" such as tooltips, etc... The older games (most - not all) are just uglier and not as user friendly as today's games.
What the older games did have was more originality but I'll take a modern day copy cat rather than working through a play session of a "classic".
