I've been wondering the same thing..
“Oh, my dear Vimes, history changes all the time. It is constantly being re-examined and re-evaluated, otherwise how would we be able to keep historians occupied? We can't possibly allow people with their sort of minds to walk around with time on their hands.” ― Lord Vetinari (Terry Pratchett: Jingo)

Thanks for the feedback. I am not exerpiencing what you seem to be experiencing.
Here is a screenshot of what I'm seeing. As you can see, it shows a variety of post from the forum.

Could you post a screenshot please? So I can get a better idea of what seems to be the issue.

Status : Offline | This has been going on for several days. If I don't log in, everything looks fine. If I log in, I get something that looks like this:

The Press Release section seems to be reduplicating itself in the recent forum posts section. I can usually clear it by poking around inside after I log in, but I can never remember exactly what I did. Very annoying, unless you're a confirmed lurker.
And I still haven't managed to get my avatar image back. I think I've resigned myself to bland anonymity.
The other thing that's happening is that when I post a screenshot, the image will only show up if I open the post in Edit and then submit. This is also very annoying.

Threads are automatically created when articles or news are posted. That is what you are seeing. They are in fact the most recent posts. So, that is working correclty.
Concerning the second issue, yes it is quite a nuisance. For right now, imageshack or imgur.com are alternatives.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Status : Offline | Actually, those are not the most recent posts. I count 9 newer posts (from active topics page) than the ones I'm seeing on the From the Forums section. Most of the posts in his image are 2 days old.
I can also confirm Phillippe's comment that if I'm logged out, everything's normal. It's only bad if I'm logged in.

I can't reproduce the problem, as you can see...
What browser are you using?

Press the "Print Screen" button to take screenshot. Then open Windows Paint and paste it. Then save it as a jpeg.

Status : Offline | My problem was figuring out how to put the jpg in the post. When I paste in the forum editor I don't see it showing up. Ok, found the right button now (upload image not insert image). At the time I took this image, only the Battlefield 3 press release was showing up in the active topics list.

One of my comps has this same set-up, and I'm still not experiencing it.
Would like to find what is causing this, before I pass it to the programmer.

Any news on this - its still happening and its really annoying - I would suspect the forums arent as active as they used to be because of this ...
For example I just posted this and it didnt appear on the front page.

Status : Offline | I just logged in and to my surprise and delight was actually directed to the thread I wanted to post in.
But then I went to the front page and sure enough, the landscape of the current threads had completely changed. If you log in, the current threads section on the front page is flooded with items from the review section, so you can't find the recent thread you wanted to read or post in. If you log out, the the current threads section magically reverts to normal.
This is very annoying and needs to be addressed.

I can confirm that logging out showed all the correct recent threads. When I logged back in all these are replaced by front page threads. So I have the same result as Philippe.
