I am still undecided on whether I want to be a mech pilot again after the awesome campaign experiences of past games.

The impression I get while skimming information is that Mechwarrior online will be some boring pointless knocking of heads in an arena.

I am afraid my memories of Mechwarrior and saving worlds or factions will be destroyed by ugly pointless run and gun action.

Is anyone here playing it?

I see. A closed BETA then.

Thats a helluva  lot of people with their mouth shut then.

You can probably confirm though from a deeper understanding of the public content if the missions

are simple squad vs squad balanced affairs?

While I have never playd WOT,  it is basically the same game with mechs.    The best way I can describe play is  Call of Duty without respawning.    You get to modify your mech to a degree.   At this point laser boats are the way to go.    At least that is what I have been "told".

Are their 32 mechs per side like BF3?

If it is like COD then I am going to be dissappointed at the lack of buttons to customise and press.

I used to like my weapons groupings, torso twists etc.

I take it if its BF3 like their are no game modes other than team deathmatch?

Have you not played World of Tanks??

Sounds like this is pretty much the same thing.  Well... probably better since it sounds like you actually have customization options as opposed to grinding away for straight linear component upgrades like in WOT.

I played wit in beta for one or two turns before deciding it was obsessive compulsive for no gameplay reward. It was like playing that old Atari game where u estimate barrel azimuth and shoot. Did not feel like a war. No infqntry, no machineguns etc etc

Well... it's the same setup from the details I've gathered.

One-off matches.  Freetop with money sink options.  Upgradeable progression of tanks/mechs.

I suppose this one will be mechs only, but that doesn't really bother me.   It easily has the potential to be more fun than WOT is, IMO.  Let's just hope they pull it off.

So no actual wars with aerospace, dropships, vehicles, hovercraft, infantry, elementals, civilian vehicles and all manner of other things that flavour the mechwarrior universe. Sounds a bit stale to me. I mean what do the mechs might have to compare themselves to?

WOT was not really my cup of tea. It felt like a basic game with a ww2 theme and a tonne of fantasy gear to collect.

Fingers crossed Mechwarrior turns into something more substantial than an online blaster.

Nefaro,  has the right of it.   Currently it is 8 on 8.   Supposely headed to 12 on 12.    The current 3 maps you can play are a tad small.    There is no plans at the moment to add anything but mechs.    They are following the timeline with today being Aug 3,3049 .   So the clans will be showing up soon.    You can group your weapons up to 6 groups.    Having played Navyfields for awhile.  The system is similiar.  Lobby, Que up,   random slug fest.     They are still adding things so who knows.   Currently they have announce the following Mechs.   With more to come.

  1. Atlas
  2. Awesome
  3. Catapult
  4. Jenner
  5. Raven
  6. Commando
  7. Hunchback
  8. Dragon
  9. Jagermech
  10. Spider
  11. Trebuchet
  12. Centurion
  13. Cicida
  14. Stalker
  15. Cataphract

Ugh..  I hope they don't add the Clans anytime soon.   With a somewhat short list of mechs like that, I'd expect them to add more of the oldies first.

I'm also a bit disappointed that you have to que up and wait on other jackholes to hit the GO button whenever they feel like it.  That was the most terrible thing about Navy Field.  While WOT's matchmaker rules were a bit too widely tiered, at least you didn't have to sit and twiddle your thumbs when you were ready to play.  I'd take that over the NF route any day.  Let's hope they implement some quick matchmaker - it shouldn't be too bad considering the smaller amount of players in each game than WOT has.

I am a bit excited about this, even though there's no overarching faction warfare for territory (as in the old 3025 Online beta that EA killed, which was awesome).  Maybe there's hope that such things could be added down the road.

Grouping is already in.  The grand campaign is planned, but will not be in at launch.  Clans will come in some form at the designated time.  how they're handled, nobody will say.  You do not have to wait for people to "ready" unless you're in a platoon.  You hit launch, and it finds you a game, just like WoT.

Campaign meaning something along the lines of EAs late, lamented MPBT:3025.  Details are sketchy so far, but that seems to be what they're aiming for.

Probably no Infantry, aerospace, or tanks, but maybe in the future.  I'd settle for something simple now.  Need to have somewhere to expand to.  I was hoping they'd keep the 3015 starting date becaus eI hate the clans and what they brought to the gameplay.  As an artistic/continuity device, they were fine, but they killed the gameplay for me.  But you make do with what you get, and if the plans they've mentioned pan out, this will be a great game.

Great to hear.  Thanks Spharv.

This may well turn out to be my go-to multiplayer action game.  Especially if they plan on doing an overarching MPBT3025-style war for worlds.

I get the impression the game is supposed to be in a persistent world, and that battles may at least partially determine a faction's control of a planet -- therefore, combat will actually have some meaning.  Can anyone confirm if this is correct (or not, as the case may be)?

That's obviously the proposed future campaign addition just mentioned.  It's not supposed to be done by release, however.

It becomes a case of either wait and fall behind or don't wait and fight attrition battles until the campaign. if ever, comes out.

I sound negative but I am still fairly happy that a mechwarrior game is actually coming out.

Jeez, that's very disappointing. One of the coolest things about btech is the amazing lore, backstory, novels, factions, etc. To release a game that is just a headbanger is sad.

Gotta get something out the door.  Get people in with the deathmatch, and implement the strategic layer and all that as you can get it finished.  Hell of a lot better than having the game together, taunting people with it and then dumping it in favor of a street racing game that draws all of about 30 people...

Yeah, I'm cool with them just putting out the repetitive free-to-play deathmatch stuff early rather than wait and take ages (with no income and little buzz).

The slippery slope there is that, more often than not, developers promise big game additions after release and they rarely deliver.  I can only think of perhaps an MMO (mayyybe two?) that later added a comparatively big game facet that they had promised at release.

So I also am a bit leery that it will ever get done unless they really rake in some nice dough.  But it seems the free-to-play model is a cash cow right now, however, if you got a well-made game so there's still a fair chance for such campaign awesomery in the future.
