I've got a bit of an urge to read some magazines. Living in Japan, English magazines are pretty few and far between and when you can find them they're so expensive that they make international subscriptions look cheap. I just got my first copy of Backpacker magazine (about $35 for 9 issues) and I gotta say I'm a little disappointed by how much advertising there is. 38 pages of ads out of a total of 98 pages. Is that normal?
Anyways, I'd really like to get my hands on a good military history magazine. It's been a while since I've been back to Canada so I can't remember what decent ones I've browsed through before. I would prefer something that covers a lot of different conflicts (ie not a Civil War magazine) and something that's not focused on just one country (ie only American or only British history). I like all different time periods but would prefer something that focuses mainly on events from the 18th century and on although I don't mind reading about the occasional ancients battles. Any suggestions? I managed to find Military History Monthly which looks like a magazine that I've browsed through in the bookstores in Canada and looks pretty promising and while it's not cheap (36 pounds/46 international) it at least doesn't totally screw you over because you're ordering from a different country which is nice to see for once. Thoughts?
Similar situation except US to Singapore, so I am also really interested in the replies (this thread actually inspired me to get off my lazy butt, stop lurking, and register!).
I subscribed to both Strategy & Tactics and World at War. Both are pretty interesting and the non-game versions aren't hideously expensive. As an added bonus, there is an option to purchase a subscription to the online Library and from there you can access PDFs of some of the previous issues (if memory serves, issues 1 - 15 of WAW and 190-266 of S&T). Good customer service too, which is nice as the post office here is less than diligent/reliable.
Seems like a good magazine, recommended to me on another forum and high rating on Amazon. Looks to cover a nice variety of time periods
Unfortunately the international version is pretty expensive compared to the US version (you can get a two year subscription for almost $10 less than the one year international version) and it's only 6 issues per year.
Seems interesting. International is an extra $12 which only works out to $2 per issue so that's not too bad.
And of course the magazine which I mentioned in my first post but now that I see that it's not a British history magazine, it's a British History magazine. It's a little bit pricey and I'd like to get a bit more variety than only British history.
I would also recommend World at War or Strategy & Tactics. They are great magazines.
Not to dock Armchair General, but their magazines tend to only feature the main military history events. It's become more of a WW2 magazine than anything else. A WW2 Rommel/Patton/D-Day magazine actually. They can't seem to talk about anything else.
The two mags mentioned at the top, don't do this. They talk about lesser known battles as well. Highly recommended. World at War is exclusively about WW2 though.
