“Oh, my dear Vimes, history changes all the time. It is constantly being re-examined and re-evaluated, otherwise how would we be able to keep historians occupied? We can't possibly allow people with their sort of minds to walk around with time on their hands.” ― Lord Vetinari (Terry Pratchett: Jingo)
Thanks for posting it. I saw it on my facebook news this morning. Definitely grabbing.
Somewhere in the forum, I don't know where, is a great AAR on King of Dragon Pass. Runequest was one of those RPGs that I heard of, but D&D was the orthodox so it almost rarely deviated in that area.
Max: "Let's hit him in the head with a mallet! That will cure his amnesia!" Sam: "You always say that!" Max: "Yeah but it will REALLY WORK this time!!!"
I had considered picking it up in the past, but was concerned about issues with running on newer OSes. Glad I waited because if they have it on GOG (cheaper too!) then they've surely given it a shakedown on Win7 and may be more reliable for troubleshooting.
The Runequest RPG system was pretty cool but could be unwieldy. The somewhat more compact version was used in the Middle Earth RPG (MERP) but still had some parts that could be a pain.

Still waiting for them to be done with the iPad version.... the iPhone version is supposed to be very good, but I can't stand playing iPhone stuff on the iPad.

I believe you may be confusing Rolemaster with Runequest. MERP was a cut-down Rolemaster; both by ICE. Runequest was a different system entirely, by Chaosium, and not really one you could call "unwieldy" in its conception. Add the richness of a broad, deep world, and there were a lot of sourcebooks and options, but they mostly slotted together pretty well into a coherent base rules framework. I believe "Runequest without the hit locations" survived (maybe to this day) as Chaosium Basic Roleplay.

Oh, and KoDP is, indeed, superb.
You're right, I was.
I recall having Rolemaster and Runequest sets at around the same time so that must've confuzzled me.
If you are thinking of picking this one up, I would recommend it on a IOS device... it has just been updated optimized for the iPad and looks great. The IOS version iOS version has more content, bug fixes, and other improvements.
"If you have the choice of versions, I unhesitatingly recommend you play the more recent build. Consider it the Director’s Cut, the game we would have made had iPhones existed in 1997."

I always did enjoy this game, and picked it up again at that price. I've been quickly reminded that it is not a cake walk, by any means. Challenging and fun.
I have played this game twice, and to be honest I got a feeling that very little depends on me. Especially crop harvesting is beyond me. I'm not able to gather enough food to feed my clan. Even if I'll trade goods for food, and send food requests to other clans. And lack of food is the beginning of the end.

You can control food pretty easily. Leave the sliders alone. Get crop blessings from temples and get animal blessings from them as well. Try recruiting more farmers and try to avoid having more than 10 weaponthanes for a while. Trade for cattle. They matter the most. Have a clan ring with someone excellent or renowned in animals and the same for plants. I would also try starting with the 3rd or 4th land choice, you get way more that way. Having 400 farmers or so should feed about 1000 people. Adjust the total crops slider, never touch the % of each type slider, so that the advisors say you cannot handle more fields. I usually get calf blessing crop blessing rain blessing and sun blessing. you could also get milk blessing. That's temples to ernalda, elmal, orianth or w/e his name is and uldaya? whatever the cow ladies name is. I also tend to get a level 2 or 3 temple to issaries and a level 2 temple to whatever the knowing god's name is. i prefer to sacrifice to get healing benefits as opposed to a temple.

Holy Glory,
It looks like I have to read the manual.
I've been not aware about half of those things.
Well I didn't read the manual, but I did wiki some of the hero quests. I played the game for a LONG time the first two days I got it before I knew how to do some stuff. The GUI hides some things because you can't tell if something is an icon or decoration.
I played this game on the IPhone for awhile. I never really succeeded unless I was warlike and took everything I needed from the clans around me. I think the single most important thing to learn is how to manage your clan ring. You will need different worshippers at different times, but you also need to keep the ring balanced. Building temples is also the way to go.
I must have missed this thread entirely. Glorantha - that brings back some memories. I played Runequest 3rd Edition way back. Bought the game straight away. I'll look forward to playing this next week while my fiancee is away with her parents.
Greg Stafford is one of the designers - the man who created one of the best pen & paper roleplaying games ever: Pendragon. If you want to play one of King Arthur's Knights with a pen-paper-dice game, you can't get any better than this. If anyone is interested, I can also recommend the 'Great Pendragon' supplement also.
