Everyone here can likely give a list of cool computer wargames "ya just gotta try" that is a mile long. And so many wargamers have missed the boat and don't even have experience with board wargames let alone own any of them. And while it is not my purpose here to debate which is better if either actually is, or whether there is a future for either or both, I am curious...if you had to suggest the "ideal" initial board game wargame to a person with no experience in them, what would be your numero uno choice (keep in mind you might want to go with novice offering). I have seen most of our hobbies past classics. Most are long off the retail scene, but interested persons can still find them if they actually care to. In spite of my love of them Advanced Squad Leader and even original Squad Leader will have to be left out of the running. Obviously also Advanced Third Reich or World in Flames. While I could offer a few titles from our gaming past, solid sure fire hits, I have one title that is actually new and currently on the market new. Victory the Blocks of War from Columbia Games. It gives you all the basics. Troops, tanks, planes, ships. Production of military units. Basic terrain concepts. And the rules manual, believe it or not, is briefer than the Axis and Allies game rules. Not burdened by historical settings, but typical of the WW2 environment. You learn all the most common to wargaming basics with this one.

I picked up one of the newer (read as toy-owned) AH games called Battle Cry on the recommendation of one of my hobby store customers a couple years ago.   It's pretty easy on the learning curve but is very addictive. Yes, it still has hexes, LOS, and all those staples but it's still really easy and is quite gorgeous too. It's beer and pretzels Civil War table top and pretty impressive IMO. As for the big wargames, well, I haven't played one of those in ages with anyone. Since I have an opponent *cough* victim *cough* who's more than happy to play, I generally go with easier ones such as this anymore. Since I don't need to attempt recalling rules as much or waste time digging through them after a 12 pack or so - it makes things easy yet enoyable. Check out the review of Age of Mythology. Some veteran gamers remarked that it may have been the best game they ever played. I haven't played it myself, but I think these folks know their games pretty well. I have played another of Eagle's games, Attack! and its expansion (a review of it is in the works but not ready yet). In terms of balance, flow and gameplay, it's one of the best I've played thus far.

The best is Diplomacy, hands down. No other game has ever held my interest so solidly for 20+ years. I also enjoy 1830. I've got the family playing Settlers of Catan. My favorite wargame is Victory in the Pacific. Sure, it sounds like I go for the easy ones, but I just bought A World at War--just to prove I'm not weak!

Oh man, I'll get slammed for this, but Risk 2210 and Lord of the Rings Risk are my two favorites for an intro wargame. Now, I'll admit they're not exactly wargames in the classic sense, but -- they have a military-strategy theme and more importantly can hook people pretty quickly, which'll lead to more advanced titles. The Down in Flames series is pretty easy to teach, too, and the campaigns are easy to learn and offer a huge amount of depth (I've taught this game to people in less than an hour).

I can't see why you would get slagged for mentioning those two games dude. Sure they might not be dripping in Panzers, but I have played both, and I agree, they are very fun games.

Hey, ThirtyOSix, don't worry about it. Good games are good games. Thanks for the input.

I don't know if I could pick one favorite wargame, but there are a few that stand out in my mind: Terrible Swift Sword (the updated version from the 80's) Caesar: Alesia The American Civil War (Victory Games) Third Reich The Desert Fox (operational level North Africa, came with Strategy & Tactics, designed by Richard Berg) Those games kept me coming back again and again, although there were many more games that I enjoyed.

I'd have to say it's a tie between Settlers of Catan & Tigris & Euphrates

My favourite board game was/is War and Peace:Game of the Napoleonic War 1805-1815. I spent many hours on this game in the early to mid 1980's. Very many fond memories.

Thanks for reminding me. I used to play War and Peace for hours when I was in high school. I loved that game. I don't think I still have it, though. Does anyone know of a new grand strategic Napoleonic game that would be suitable for solitaire play, since I don't know any opponents? And is there anyone in New England looking for an opponent?

"Suitable for solitaire play" would be the killer, I think, unless you are accustomed to creating your own innovative solitaire solutions. Most multiplayer games these days go through great lengths to keep everyone as actively involved as possible. This usually doesn't translate well into a solo gaming experience. You might be best off waiting for Matrix/ADG to release the computer version of Empires in Arms.

Thanks. I never did play the board version of Empires In Arms. I'd definitely be interested in a computer version, though. Any guesses when it might be coming out, like next year, or 2005, or even later?

Well, I'm going to go for Panzer Gruppe Guderian (SPI). Easy, fun, and with the unknown strengths replayable.... especially if you have to go solitaire.... However, any of the TSS based civil war games were a blast.... thats a game design that needs to ported over to a computer.

I remember when I was really into wargaming back in the late 70's and that Panzergruppe Guderian was one of SPI's big successes. I never got to play it, though. TSS is definitely one of my all-time favorites. The Battleground series for the computer reminds me a lot of TSS, although it's showing its age. The command and control system could definitely be improved a lot, for example.

I too am an ASL player, but, I would go with the old AH game Stalingrad. It was a lot of fun and the rulebook was something like 4 pages.
I know it's only Rock and Roll, but I like it.

Stalingrad was my very first game--it hooked me. I keep it for nostalgic purposes, but I believe The Russian Campaign is a much better game and simulation.

Astrotech - You might want to take a look at Eagle Games 'Napoleon in Europe.' I have played it solitaire and really enjoyed it as far as solitaire games go. It's a very pretty game and has some very good gameplay to boot. I highly recommend it for group play. There is a new Napoleonic game on the market called 'Soldier Emperor' by Avalanche games. It looks good...nice graphics, mounted board, good counters, etc, but to be honest I don't have much of an idea of how it plays.

Yes I agree and I own a copy of TRC, but, I guess that it is just the nostalga that makes Stalingrad my favorite.

I learned AH's "PanzerBlitz" with a friend in 1975, and its been a favorite ever since. Easy to learn and fun to play. I've taught it to 4 or 5 friends since and still play a game every great once in a while.

Hello all ! You know, it's tough to say what the single best would be... it would depend on a lot of factors. Here's my list of front runners: PanzerArmee Afrika, Air Assault on Crete, Panzerkreig, TSR's "Drive on Stalingrad", or how about 3M's "Feudal". "Jutland" was pretty cool too.
