Status : Offline | I picked up one of the newer (read as toy-owned) AH games called Battle Cry on the recommendation of one of my hobby store customers a couple years ago. It's pretty easy on the learning curve but is very addictive. Yes, it still has hexes, LOS, and all those staples but it's still really easy and is quite gorgeous too. It's beer and pretzels Civil War table top and pretty impressive IMO.
As for the big wargames, well, I haven't played one of those in ages with anyone. Since I have an opponent *cough* victim *cough* who's more than happy to play, I generally go with easier ones such as this anymore. Since I don't need to attempt recalling rules as much or waste time digging through them after a 12 pack or so - it makes things easy yet enoyable.

I have played another of Eagle's games, Attack! and its expansion (a review of it is in the works but not ready yet). In terms of balance, flow and gameplay, it's one of the best I've played thus far.

My favorite wargame is Victory in the Pacific. Sure, it sounds like I go for the easy ones, but I just bought A World at War--just to prove I'm not weak!

Now, I'll admit they're not exactly wargames in the classic sense, but -- they have a military-strategy theme and more importantly can hook people pretty quickly, which'll lead to more advanced titles. The Down in Flames series is pretty easy to teach, too, and the campaigns are easy to learn and offer a huge amount of depth (I've taught this game to people in less than an hour).

Sure they might not be dripping in Panzers, but I have played both, and I agree, they are very fun games.

Terrible Swift Sword (the updated version from the 80's)
Caesar: Alesia
The American Civil War (Victory Games)
Third Reich
The Desert Fox (operational level North Africa, came with Strategy & Tactics, designed by Richard Berg)
Those games kept me coming back again and again, although there were many more games that I enjoyed.

Very many fond memories.

Thanks for reminding me. I used to play War and Peace for hours when I was in high school. I loved that game. I don't think I still have it, though. Does anyone know of a new grand strategic Napoleonic game that would be suitable for solitaire play, since I don't know any opponents? And is there anyone in New England looking for an opponent?

Most multiplayer games these days go through great lengths to keep everyone as actively involved as possible. This usually doesn't translate well into a solo gaming experience.
You might be best off waiting for Matrix/ADG to release the computer version of Empires in Arms.

Thanks. I never did play the board version of Empires In Arms. I'd definitely be interested in a computer version, though. Any guesses when it might be coming out, like next year, or 2005, or even later?

However, any of the TSS based civil war games were a blast.... thats a game design that needs to ported over to a computer.

I remember when I was really into wargaming back in the late 70's and that Panzergruppe Guderian was one of SPI's big successes. I never got to play it, though.
TSS is definitely one of my all-time favorites. The Battleground series for the computer reminds me a lot of TSS, although it's showing its age. The command and control system could definitely be improved a lot, for example.

I know it's only Rock and Roll, but I like it.

Stalingrad was my very first game--it hooked me. I keep it for nostalgic purposes, but I believe The Russian Campaign is a much better game and simulation.

You might want to take a look at Eagle Games 'Napoleon in Europe.'
I have played it solitaire and really enjoyed it as far as solitaire games go. It's a very pretty game and has some very good gameplay to boot. I highly recommend it for group play.
There is a new Napoleonic game on the market called 'Soldier Emperor' by Avalanche games. It looks good...nice graphics, mounted board, good counters, etc, but to be honest I don't have much of an idea of how it plays.

Yes I agree and I own a copy of TRC, but, I guess that it is just the nostalga that makes Stalingrad my favorite.

PanzerArmee Afrika, Air Assault on Crete, Panzerkreig, TSR's "Drive on Stalingrad", or how about 3M's "Feudal". "Jutland" was pretty cool too.
