its seems to be a common theme among Europeans to point out the relative age of the United States. When one looks at the datlelines you can see that the United States is in fact one of the oldest countries. France, Germany, England...all have completly changed since 1776. Countries like France and Germany have had numerious governments and social systems change in the last 200 years. As a white europeanish country (not trying to be offensive its just who founded the country) we may only be 230 odd years old but weve been a coherent entity for longer then any country I can think of in Europe.

Very interesting post, with some good points I think. Also seeing one of the offending posts, speaking of the age of the US, I think this is something that some people need to be reminded of.

and as previously pointed out by some eloquent gentleman, look what we've accomplished in that span of time. There is not a country in history that has done so much.

Yeah need to distinguish between nation and government. The US has one of the longest lasting governments. We are a young NATION however. Feel more pride in my nation than my government. Sure many others do also.

Reading the quotes , i guess that you guys can feel proud of what you country (US) achieved. It is legitimate . As it is legitimate that anybody should feel proud (one way or the other) about its own country . If you get deep into the history, social and cultural achievements of many countries , you will find many reasons for people to feel proud of their own country . It happens in every continent and every country. I guess it is also important to look beyond one's own mirror to have a look at other people achievements [

My feelings exactly. Every country/culture has something(s) to be proud of. They also have things to be ashamed of. The way to a better country and planet is to continue to celebrate the achievements and to learn from the mistakes.

Starfury: Interesting post. I never thought of it that way. Someone once said that England and America are two nations seperated by a common language. English is not the same as American, now will it ever be, just the same as neither one is the same as australian or Canadian. Each is basically English to begin with, but with widely divergent slang, colloquilisms and general usage. Which is why we always end up explaining ourselves to each other whenever we meet. A "barbie" is a lot different to an American and an Australian, and so is a "boot" or "bonnet" to an Englishman. And absolutely no one, including other Englishmen, can understand a Lancashireman.

Ya, like how a fag is a gay guy in north america, and a smoke in Britain, and in England they say "I've got to go 'bum a fag'"

Actually you speak differently from state to state. Unlike here in Australia, a country the same size as the US, with a population of only 20,000,000, we speak and sound exactly the same right around the country. It is the Canadians, especially those in the western provinces, who speak the clearest English.

Anywho, back to the original issue, America may be the oldest nationish (your really more of a union of states) The european countries have had an identity for much longer. English were english, and the french sure as hell were french.
